It is now February and Re:Zero has not played its new opening.

I know it exists because I've hear it!

I saw that ranking where Demon Slayer has over 10x as many "sales" as a brand than One Piece last year, but it wasn't until Super Eyepatch Wolf's video today that I realized exactly what a phenomenon this was. I was mostly attributing it to the movie in my head.

82 million volume sales in 2020. One Piece did not break 8 million. The combined sales numbers of the best sales year in history for One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach combined only reach half of that. Jesus fucking christ. I cannot imagine how much Jump wishes Gotouge didn't end it.

One Piece had reached lifetime publication sales of 460 million at the end of 2019. So, uh...no.

Per volume that's still about on par. The last one did over 4 million, a number one piece hasn't reached since probably around the time skip.

I looked up some numbers, DS volume 23 is the final volume and it did something like 3.5 million

if you divide 82 million by 23 you get 3.5 million per volume so it's just people catching up on the series after watching the anime

unless I'm reading the numbers wrong and the latest volume sold 82 million, it's not impressive to look at something like volumes sold per year as something impressive if that thing exploded in popularity

Like, you're not revealing anything new here, he talked about this. The 22 highest selling volumes of the year were all Demon Slayer, with One Piece's best selling volume being 23.

As a former One Piece Stan, I just don't get it.

Demon Slayer is over and it's not gonna hit these numbers again. It won the numbers last year with a complete decimation, which is a GOOD THING for the industry, just let it have this. Do think Oda is upset that a newcomer touched his crown? Fuck no, he's happy as hell for her.

uh I'm not defensive about this, I just don't see how it's mindblowing how many it sold when it's about on par with what popular manga sells per volume, the sales just happen to be in one year instead over over 10 or 20

unless you're extrapolating that DS would have continued to sell on average 3.5 million per volume over 20 years then yeah that's impressive

What's impressive is how much the franchise has exploded. Similar events of exploding popularity have happened before in the past but nothing even remotely like this, and especially not with a manga that ended halfway into the year. Yes the volume to volume sales are only on par with, you know the #1 best selling manga in the world, but the manga as a whole still sold ten times as much. The property itself, across all mediums, sold at an even higher ratio that that.

These are absolutely incredible numbers. The fact that tons of those were old volumes doesn't seem to me to lessen that in even the slightest bit. Dollars are still dollars, people still had to pay for those volumes (and one would also assume that these numbers would still reflect a similar piracy ratio as usual too, so the actual reach is likely much more insane). There's no reason to prod at it like we're in a Highschool cafeteria.

I am very interested to see what happens with Chainsaw Man, though that's in a very different position with the series already over, and the show already having itself planned out from beginning it end. Yeah it's continuing with Part 2 in Jump+, but I think it's very safe to assume the anime will cover part 1 by itself.

Also happy to see how well Spy x Family is doing. Kaiju No.8 I had never even heard of, guess I missed when he claims it went viral on Twitter? Definitely gonna check that out.

Incidentally, the One Piece manga experienced a popularity explosion in 2010 due to the Strong World movie, similar to what happened with Demon Slayer in 2020. It sold 32 million volumes that year, including 2.6M for its best-selling/newest volume, and reached 59 total volumes. It did 38 million in 2011, its best year overall.

Most recent vol cleared 400k in a month, which is actually a little more than JJK pre anime. With a stellar anime who knows.

Ufotable never fails to hit on their animation! It was absolutely one of the best studio contracts an anime adaptation has gotten in a loooooong time.

We'll see how long that season 2 actually takes to air, though. Not exactly a studio known for speed.

Just started Horimiya. Very different to what I was expecting and a brilliant OP with an ED that is terrifying in equal measure. It's also one of the increasingly rare cases where I haven't already read the manga which is always welcome in this genre. Hopefully it doesn't go to shit halfway through.
