I've hung out with a lot of "nerds" in my life - gaming, comics, anime, even creative writers - and the second con-season comes around a switch gets flipped and they become uber aggressive and sexual. the stories I could tell about dragon con parties I went to in my teens. not defending these people in any way, but trying to argue that there's something poisonous in the smash community is not quite right. It's a larger issue in geek fandom to be honest. Been going to video game/anime cons for almost a decade now and it's sad to say that as welcoming and fantastic as these communities can be, there is definitely this darker side. Last year a bunch of bigger name cosplay photographers started getting called out for this stuff. At high school parties, you expect an age range of 15-18 (and rightly ostracize the one weirdo in their 20s). In college, the range is generally 18-24. At these events, you conceivably have a range of like... 15-45, so you're left with this huge mix of impressionable young people spending time with much more mature people, and the larger social contract has limited stuff like this for generations because deep down, we know it's a recipe for trouble. For myself personally, I fuck up constantly despite trying my best. Its usually the big fuck ups that make me realize I need to do better.
