I live in an area whose newscasters always refer to the region as the tri-state area. For a long time it had never occurred to me that this term didn't specifically refer to my neck of the woods. However, I know now that it's used in quite a few different places, so what consists of the tri-state area to you?

Other possibilities: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-state_area (sorry, Sioux City)

I didn't think so, but it was listed on the wikipedia page, so I figured what the hell. I've at least heard of people blurring those three together in that context.

I almost included that, just on a whim, looking at the map and where there were cities near triple points.

I think Chicagoland is technically a more specific area than the Tri-state. Just parts of the states that are actually near Chicago.

I'm near Chicago and don't think I've heard Tri-State used for anywhere local

the NY one has been ingrained in me by years of TEW using that as one of the most important regions

Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio (is the order you would probably hear it from Kentuckians who don't live in Northern Kentucky)

I've heard it my entire life and seen businesses say they serve the "tri-state area" while having the outlines of those three states on their trucks or whatever. It never once occurred to me to think that it had anything to do with Cincinnati.

Kentucky's biggest city is across a river from Indiana so most of us who aren't near Cincy think of Indiana as more of the associated state

That said, Cincinnati's major airport is in Kentucky, so that's a significant association too. Rivers, man.

lot of Cinci rep here.

Also, puns is totally wrong. Cincinnati is basically the center of half of Kentucky, a third of Indiana, and like a sixth of Ohio. Which makes the proper order "Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana."

Arklatex has a better ring to it compared to just calling it tri-state. I mean the region, and not just Texarkana.

Kentuckiana is something most Kentuckians I know have heard of before. If there's one for Ohio, I haven't heard it. Well at least not an endearing one. FIFO - Fucking Idiot From Ohio - is maybe just as well known as Kentuckiana, though! :P

Also, not that it gets me hot under the collar or anything but it seems like you're genuinely misinformed so I'll point it out to you, it's totally inaccurate to say "half" of Kentucky is centered around Cincinatti. 25% of Kentucky lives literally in Louisville or Lexington. After that you have about 3 of the top 10 counties by population that are close to Cincy (Kenton, Boone, and Campbell). Quite a stretch from "half" of the state lol.

Oh you just mean the geographical area that it refers to, I thought you meant only the northwestern part of the state recognizes that it's a thing. My bad.

Anyway, yeah. If you tallied up the number of Kentuckians who live near and/or associate with Indiana in their mind and compared it to Ohio, it's not that close.

Well, there's the whole professional sports thing. But we have UK for that, and I meant more in terms of daily life function anyway.

You know, come to think of it, the most associated border states overall by numbers would likely be Indiana and Tennessee. But Indiana/Kentucky/Tenneessee doesn't make for a very efficient tri-state area, geographically speaking.

Yeah I was mostly just joshing lol

Cincinnati has a huge footprint in the area it services though, and a lot of that is in Indiana and KY, so it does have a big impact on the states around it.

If you mean the one that includes CT, then no. That's a different tri-state, up by Port Jervis. Also a valid answer, but I wanted to move around the country at least a little with the poll options, and the CT one is better known than PA.

Also, ^5 the 9% of you that know the correct answer to this question is Delaware, South Jersey, and SE PA.
