Currently don't have a private yard as much as a backyard patio. Area in front is taken care of by contractor as it's community space

I literally just finished doing it about 5 minutes ago.

One of the downsides of home ownership is that you have to do all of your own maintenance, either by doing it yourself or paying someone else.

One of the downsides of home ownership in the suburbs is that, if you don't do yard maintenance, your neighbors will complain and you'll start getting fines from the township/municipality.

True but that's good incentive to maintain a good curbside appeal. I used to live next to a guy who didn't do jack s*** with his yard and it was overrun with weeds and crap. Attracted a bunch of rodents too. :/

I agree with you. Home ownership has its advantages and disadvantages and you have to be prepared to incur unforeseen costs. I try to do as much of my own maintenance as I can and I use the knowledgeable folks at home centers whenever I can.

I hate when people do not care for their property. Like you I once lived next to a couple who didn't do jack so I would just mow their lawn for them. I even set their trash out a few times.

Never mowed a lawn in my life. My parents always had a service do it, or I lived in apartments and didn't have to do it.

I technically have a lawn but it's got so much junk on it due to my old man being a hoarder it really doesn't require cutting.

I do it myslef, lawn services are a rip-off (I think the base price is like $25 per mow) unless you have something so large it would require an industrial tractor to mow it in a reasonable amount of time. I can do mine in about an hour with a push mower (and I technically can get away with only doing the front once a week, the back has so much tree cover I can skip a week if I want to).

I mow my place and a friend's house. Usually takes about 90 minutes each.

I have a Hustler Super-Z zero-turn mower with a 27 hp Kawasaki engine, hydrostatic transmission, 60 inch cutting deck, an 11.7 gallon fuel tank, and a top speed of 14 MPH.

I did mine for the first time last weekend, though I got interrupted by a rain storm. I finished it yesterday for the first time. actually pretty satisfying...

the main downside was mosquitos. I must have gotten like 2 dozen bites on my arms, each time. I've ordered some bug spray but it doesn't get here till wednesday.

I used to be the one who had to, physical issues and all.

Currently sister is until she can get another job I imagine. She's all over it, not having a job has made her stir crazy. She's taken to exercising more and more too, and doing more and more random cleaning.

If I had a lawn I'd dig it up and plant a bunch of wheat or something... front yard garden!

Where I live that'd probably get you fined for being too high and they'd cut it down without your permission which you'd be paying for.

And it's not even a HOA place. Our town likes to pretend it's classier than it is I guess.

But is isn't even one, it's the 'city' *coughtowncough* itself.

I can't even imagine dealing with all that crap.

there's a few places here with large lawn gardens... growing rows of corn, sunflowers and pumpkins.

The main rule is they can't creep into other people's yards

When I had a lawn I mowed it myself. But I always procrastinated and that made the job harder for me.

I'm in an apartment now so the grass that's out there ain't my problem

Reading this topic again just reminded me I need to spray some weed killer again on various parts of my lawn. I poured about a cup on some crab grass and bloody thing is still alive.

Crab grass is in the family Poaceae so weed killers that won't kill grass won't kill crab grass either, and herbicides that will kill crab grass will also kill your lawn. But unlike most lawn grasses, crab grass is an annual, it will die off every winter then regrow from seed. So you can either pull the stuff by hand thus preventing it from going to seed, or you can apply a pre-emergent herbicide in the early spring and late fall which will kill the new plants before they can get established.

I used to have a major problem with sandbur, which is also family Poaceae and thus immune to most lawn-safe herbicides. Applying a pre-emergent over several acres would be extremely expensive, so I just wait until the seed heads begin to form then I pull the plants by hand. I still have some sandbur, but it's much less than it used to be.

Frequent mowing to 2 or 3 inches can help as well.

Thanks for the tips. I will look into this. I have maybe two or three giant patches of crab grass on my lawn that are more of an eye sore. Rest of the lawn ain't exactly pretty either since I do not regularly water it so the crab grass kind of blend in.
