i didn't actually care that much about how well i did, it's more that... i gradually started finding the concept kind of weird and off-putting? if i went to my real life group of friends and said "hey, let's have a tournament in which we're all matched up against each other, and at the end we'll find out who the most popular person in the group is!" i doubt that would be very well received. yes, i get that we're not all friends with each other, but this is still mostly a community of people who have known each other for ages.

i was fine with it back in 2004, when we were dumb kids who did all kinds of weird shit on the board, but the fact that it was still going in 2017 is rather bizarre to me.

Well, it used to be a great melting pot bringing together people more interested in the Contests themselves, AIM Chat, B8 projects, B8 tournaments, social games, podcasts, and posting on the board generally.

But in the final years the only people still voting were those active in the discord chat, so all that mattered was how active you were there, which obviously wasn't thrilling and meant it couldn't sustain interest.

Popularity contests are really weird to me, especially internet ones.

I know there is one guy on this board, who almost every topic he makes, is about him rating people's popularity, or his own, and it always makes me feel a little sad for him.

I guess if this were YouTube or TikTok or something where the average age was really low, I would kind of get it, but I assume most are in their 30s, or mid-late 20s.

The complains were also the other way around I remember, people only coming to discord and not board 8 doing very well. Not that I think it mattered much.

Almost everyone participating cared a lot about it, no point in anyone denying that. I think it's closed for the better, but I have some pretty fun memories.

Also I just remembered how much Naruto I watched predicting this.

Well b8chat on aim was every bit as bad as discord.

MSG was the poster child for that - had nearly no board presence at all but was a power house

i liked b8chat for what it was but i'm just not a fan of chatrooms in general.

also, b8chat was a supplement to board 8 rather than a replacement of the board. seems like practically all social interaction has moved to the discord now.

Everyone who really cared about UOTY instead got their ego boosts and bloodthirsts from participating in militant political movements elsewhere online. It's not that they grew up, it's that "online popularity contests" grew up to a scale of literal global war. UOTY couldn't compete with that.

AIM chat and Discord are very similar. I don't have as much time for it as before, so the slow format of the board works better for me. But just because the board is dying doesn't mean Discord is replacing it. AIM was still probably more active overall back in the day, especially if you count mafia.

I joined the discord server and chatted with people in the main chat a few times. it was typically a much better experience than trying to chat with anyone on the board. trying to talk in the "gauntlet" chat was like showing up to a country club wearing sweatpants. would not recommend. can't remember looking at any of the other channels. that being said, I normally get bored, distracted, or busy. I don't think I ever stuck around for more than a few days at a time. it's been at least a year, maybe more than two years, since the last time I did or said anything there.

I guess you can count me among the people who don't regularly post there.

UotY died because the Discord basically decided who was going to win beforehand. I remember it was well known that Shad was going to win before Round 1 even started, so it lost a lot of the intrigue.

I miss the UotY Podcast Show, that was my favorite part

It was never like, a genuine conscious decision <_< maybe a couple of people thought that way? but by and large the mentality was "this is the obvious person who hasn't won it yet" and it wasn't wrong. it's more that it was predictable than that it was "decided"

Well the discord is good because some of the sub discords are pretty cool

The main b8 discord not as much and actually has a lot of the board not on it though, and that's where you find the UUL cast-offs that made up the UotY voting base in its twilight years were/are by and large.

But I doomed UotY way before the Discord gained popularity so why are we talking about this.
