What do you mean by "non-police authorities"? Ultimately assuming you still want to, at minimum, arrest people for stuff like rape and murder, some entity needs to be empowered to make those arrests. At that point you effectively have police, regardless of what you're calling them.

I honestly don't know all the details but yes the general argument is that the police's authority is too broad and you would specialize the force into more typical professional jobs that are not "the police" as a generic authority role. One of the most compelling arguments is for mental health emergencies because police don't really have the proper training to be first responders for those. But also possibly things like traffic management and detective work - does a traffic cop really need a gun?

You'll still have a police force taking care of those criminals you mention but their scope and authority will be much reduced and focused.

Patrolmen, highly trained people who only have non-lethal weaponry and cannot arrest anyone without a warrant. Have visible ID #s in multiple places so any bystander can look them up/provide witness testimony.

Can detain for X minutes depending on the suspected crime, with the citizen being repaid for their time if an arrest isnt made.

SWAT, who have guns and literally only
respond to active violent crime.

Look at CNNs website, and the front page focus is exclusively on the protests themselves and White House's response. Go to Fox News website and the focus is exclusively on the looting and property damage. If you criticize the looting to someone on the left, you are called a racist. If you criticize Derek Chauvins actions to the right, they call you antifa scum.

Can't someone both be against what Derek Chauvin did, and support justice, but also be against the opportunistic looting and property damage going on, which is affecting innocent business owners who are just coming out of months of closure due to Covid? Both sides are doing wrong things here. Most of the "riots" were peaceful until the police made them into riots. The responsibility lies in them, sometimes directly and sometimes inderectly.

Please educate yourself with the facts as the video and photographic evidence has shown them.

These are the police riots, the police are out of control. Not figuratively, not in regards to past actions. They are out of control NOW, DURING.

I live near the DC area and things are absolutely going nuts here, buildings are on fire and chaos everywhere, I think Marshall law could be declared anytime now.

As for the situation in Minneapolis, everyone wants that cop prosecuted, but I personally think that's extremely unlikely to happen and the reason for this is if they prosecute him, other cops will lose faith in the government's ability to protect them and they could quit, therein lies the reason why he won't be charged. What could happen is that he could be retrained and given a new name to work in a nearby county's police station. And if that now irritated cop makes another arrest that ends in the death of a black person, the protests that follows potentially be even bigger than the protests this time around.

So, the situation right now is that there were a lot of peaceful protests going on. Unfortunately, a bunch of people come in with their own agendas and behave inappropriately. The looters aren't there to protest, and the protestors aren't there to loot. The original autozone damage was done by a cop in disguise.

Everyone just wants protests to be done quietly somewhere they don't have to see them and therefore won't accomplish anything. People flipped their shit over an NFL player kneeling respectfully

Just like how the good police departments aren't there to fuck shit up, and the bad police departments aren't there to support the people
