How about instead of always going to the gun, we train police officers to use stun guns or pepper spray? How about instead of instigating violence we train police to de-escalate and use words to resolve situations? That sounds way better than "shooting to wound, not kill".

For fucking real, cops being allowed to kill at all is the issue here. If anything, the protests are showing that cops have MANY nonlethal options for subdual and actively choose not to use them on threats, only on unarmed protesters. And even that can be excessive force. Disarming the police IS the compromise stance here, I can't believe people are arguing against this point just because it's Tony saying it. Biden is an out of touch old man and his personal ideas are terrible and it's completely reasonable to demand better.

The Insurrection Act being the law that would allow him to deploy active-duty US Military in the streets. It was last invoked in 1992 with the Rodney King riots in LA.

I imagine this is just another one of those "Trump floats some batshit insane idea to the media and nothing comes of it" but given how unhinged he's sounded on this and how it's right down his racism lane the fact that this is even being mentioned is alarming.

Also, yeah shoot to wound is better in concept but impossible. There aren't enough people in the word that are good enough with a split second aim for that to be a reasonable solution.

But I don't think disarming the police is the solution either. Besides, in this case none of them used their weapon are were able to cause enough damage anyway. Tony, how would you suggest an officer deal with someone in SEP's scenario? If someone actually is running at them with a knife, I mean.

Again, I'm all for limiting firearms to those specifically and specially trained to deal only with violent situations, but taking them away completely is basically just getting rid of the ability to stop an active mass shooter, and mass shootings are going to happen as long as guns are around, period.

If you take guns away from police completely, you've basically gotta outlaw them all together.

(I was talking specifically about the case you were referring to where an officer planted drugs. He turned his cam off but didn't wait the 30 seconds to try to frame the guy.)

I take basically the exact opposite stance of Tony in that I have zero respect for gun ownership and will always assume anybody who owns a gun is at least somewhat a threat.

I definitely could never be completely comfortable with someone in their home if I knew they owned a gun.

I dont even think banning all guns is neccessary but yeah bilateral disarmament is the entire point. You can't safely disarm the public without first demilitarizing the police, and vice versa.

Because the GOP listens to people, gathers facts, and chooses the best strategy given their situation. They have no reason to compromise with you. They would if you had better leverage but you don't have it. You would have it if you didn't throw it out at every opportunity. The truth is the moderates won't let Bernie's faction have an iota of power. So, you don't have their votes. And without those votes, your project to bully the GOP will end in complete failure.

They have a reason to compromise with us because elected leaders have a responsibility to protect the interests of all Americans, not just those that voted for them.

To go on a bit further, the moderate Dems would absolutely prefer 10 Trumps to Bernie. Why? Because they know that Trump will not hurt their comfortable affluent lives. Under Trump, their 401k balance will keep rising. Under Trump, their salary will go up every year. Under Trump, they can live in their affluent gated communities and drink champagne and when anything bad happens in the outside world, they can just blame Trump.

Under Bernie, the wealth our economy has created since 1980 is going to have to be shared by all the people, not just 20% of them. The affluent will no longer have the privileged positions they now hold. Now, the actual super rich - I'm sure they'll be fine. They have enough money parked in the Cayman Islands or Switzerland or wherever to perma-vacation forever. But the merely affluent are going to have to accept people who went to worse schools than they did or didn't go to college at all as their equals and they are terrified of that.
