Match 1: There's always been something off-putting sounding in the background of Hopes and Dreams that I can't really explain but it has always bothered me (like Besaid Island), and honestly I've just never been a fan. Oh no, I am actually voting for Soflan-chan! This song is totally wack (in both a good way and a bad way), and I respect that it just slaps in some yukkuri vocals.

Match 2: I can't even technically call The Wyrm's Jewelbox a discovery, since I discovered it literally the day before nominations opened. Anyways, this was going to be in my GG until it got suddenly SNIPED right before I was going to run my game and also this is my 2nd favorite song in the contest, very good!! (Also Maiden & Spell is a pretty fun game, you should all check it out.) Thrashard in the Cave has some cool smooth jazzsteppy thing going on, not really what I expect from Castlevania music, but it's not bad.

ToC: Seize the Truth is still the most what VGMC champion, I mean I like it and it's totally something in my tastes, but that's probably why I feel it doesn't fit lol. IF~A is okay too (oh hi it's Gust vs. Falcom)

Soflan's pretty okay. I've heard a few songs with this style, and it's middle of the road-ish. Hopes and Dreams is pretty good. One of the best Undertales.

Wyrm's Jewelbox is alright. I checked the playtime one Thrashard because it felt like it'd been going on for like 10m and it was only at the 2:30 mark...

Wow @ Wyrme's Jewelbox. Love all the 16th-note synth runs, especially the way they ornament the main melody, and then when piano starts doing all those runs, YAY ....Cool combinations of sounds give this magical feeling (especially later at 1:40). Great choice of lead synth, and LOVE when they do the duet at 2:04....such good harmonies there by the choir. I love anywhere where the rhythm section does 5/8 while other parts basically ignore it and follow a bigger meter.

EDIT: Ummm... yeah, I put Konran at the worst possible place in message #3. It was not meant to be a vote. >_> Granted, I do like it a lot!

heck it, Hopes and Dreams is an average Undertale song for me, which is probably some what above average as far as "things" are considered but what are things. It's a big event song of epic culmination of hope don't give up fight on motivation , I guess? But that doesn't work on me. so it's just, *shrug*. There is good stuff in this song and is probably better than an average "hope motivation" type song for me but I'm not feeling it today, maybe it's the electric guitar. Soft Flan is a song with vocal focus yes but it's speed star kanade 2 up against an under tale once again what a bracket. It's a fun song with variety and plenty of silliness. Silliness is good, don't need to take yourself seriously. Why is there that Old Whispery Japanese Computer Voice in there it's so dumb to me but in a good way. Vocal focus is real heavy here but these vocals are much less appealing than most. Right now I'm certainly leaning towards Soflan but on another day I could see myself going for the Undertale Hopes & Dreams. Today it just wasn't resonating with me, and Soflan was, good job.

Match 2 is a heck of a match, Wyrm's Jewelbox has some Really fun rhythms about it especially the stuff at :23. It's got that synth+organic instrumentation combination that works well in things like Isoleucine, though there some moments where the organic instruments are a bit overpowering for the combo and it's a little offputtingly imbalanced, but hey this song's still got plenty to enjoy. Thrashard on the other hand is a much more chill atmosphere, though it's got some fast paced energetic drums to contrast those calm synths. I'm really digging how this sort of combination works out. Though this is still a close match like wow I think in the favorites bracket I put together quickly early on I was expecting to vote in the opposite way in Both of todays matches whoa get wrecked, past me.

Seize the Truth sounds like another song sped up at the start or something. Toc match is also extremely close wow all close matches today! I'm a lot less motivated to talk about the toc match for some reason. But this is another match where one song has a pretty consistent "score" (number score not musical score I mean it's music but you get what I mean) for me all the way through (invitation flower is this song in this case) whereas the other one has a lot of going back and forth with scoring higher, and then scoring lower. I really like a lot of the slightly-dark battle energy Seize the Truth has, though a lot of my feelings on that are muddied by electric guitar & high strings. Oh wait I've already talked about this song before I literally forgot and went and checked and we're on the stage 3 stage so now they've all had a chance to be talked about cool. Nevermind that some days I probably skipped write ups oh well. Honestly I sort of hate how close this is for me because while these songs aren't that bad I don't want to listen to them that much to make a decision. Well, I'm feeling the energy more with Seize the Truth right now. Honestly I could probably have flipped all 3 votes today if I were in a different sort of mood or something what a close day !!

Hopes and Dreams is my 101st favorite in the contest! Yay! a Toby Fox song I can say nice things about ! : ) I like this song! It's very happy! and very HOPEful ! I like these types of rhythmically repeating short strings patterns, some harmonies in this song are cool. lots of sus2 chords~! That's my favorite chord ever (maybe) for SOME reason! 7ths/sus4s and other more complex chords I really love the full thick sound of present throughout this thing. I don't think this is a particularly high point of Toby's music mixing/production-wise but it's certainly not his worst (it's mostly the guitar in the mix, reminds me a lot of my frustrations with "atelier music with guitar in it", i don't necesarily dislike the timbre but it's mixed in in a way that muds the stuff that interests me up). Regardless, I can appreciate the composition behind that hangup well enough that it's not dragging this down too much, there's at least clarity of the elements I most care about. I always at least moderately liked this but it's grown on me a bit, more to my current tastes than in the past for sure, not one of my favorites from the game or anything but i certainly don't dislike it, top half of the ost at least

Konran shoujo Soflan-chan!! is my 79th favorite in the contest! This song defines itself around its hyper-complexity rhythmically, and...i wish i could be excited about it because that's totally my thing, but I can't hear it over the high pitch girl being a person! This would likely be top 40 or even top 20 if the vocals weren't there, not because I dislike the vocals, but because they're mixed so loudly I can barely hear the interesting stuff behind them! Very similar to my complaints about speed star kanade except even more frustrating because like, yeah I "kind of like" speedcore, but this type of over-the-top complex-for-no-reason prog/jazz fusion is among my favorite type of music! There's crazy interesting harmonies in some layers in the background, tons of rhythmic insanity and I can barely hear it! Another issue I have (this is detached from the music itself and not impacting my judgment), I also think I find a bit of frustration in how much this defines itself around its complexity in a way that feels kinda insulting. I know tons and tons of absurd avant-garde/prog/math/fusion stuff that goes this far rhythmically /regularly/ (and vgm and stuff in those same categories), so it's like a second hand embarrassing feeling seeing it advertise itself as if it's the most rhythmically intense thing when there's other VGM (and even other rhythm game tracks), that at least by my definition, take this sorta thing much further than this ever does. It's still cool and I am glad it exists, I just wish it sold itself more 'honestly' or something, it makes a big deal out of forms of complexity that are not even necessarily that outlandish compared to so much of what's out there (through its lyrics, self-description, etc "The answer's a 5/4 metr... eh, aah- wait, you changed it again, didn't you!" is literally part of the lyrics...as if changing a song from 5/4 to another timesig is this CRAZY prog thing when it's practically the least rhythmically weird thing some of my favorite music does). my big problems are that and that I wish I just could hear all the cool things it's doing that I can barely hear behind the person! other than that I think it's fun and sounds cool and it definitely engages me musically

The Wyrm's Jewelbox is my 20th favorite in the contest! 2000. 20000002.00. My favorite discovery of the contest after the "discovery" of "Seto Kaiba". This thing is a pretty good representative of "kaonashi & mycro" music haha. Odd time (mostly just 5/8, with the not-odd-time parts with 6/8 and 4/4 taking up big chunks), "big marcato string chords on cool rhythms", and constant modulations as how the harmonic language in the music works (this is the most "key mycro-kao overlap thing" probably). it's like a more electronic version of my favorite basiscape or hiroki morishita stuff. like REVENGER meets CONQUEST~ABLAZE except in odd time. the constant 16ths Fake Piano is so JUICY and the constant 16th synth is so JUICY PART 2, instrumentation and "soundscape" is just all so JUICY PART 3 it feels like an organic computer.

Thrashard in the Cave (Arrange Ver.) is my 97th favorite in the contest! cool chill chords~! love echoy cool filtered epiano sounds. very "Acid jazz" which is not a real genre of music because "acid" is not a real instrument the way Cave Story is. oh now the drums are dnb cool!! This is s o chill i am in the moon cloud that is red i'm like the werewolf having a nap in the moonTHe SYNTH lead is so expressive, like that patch is the exact type of sound that makes me think "I like synthesizers", it warps and morphs between so many different timbres, and all the vibrato/portamento/pitch bendyness makes it come alive. soloistic nature of it is great.I LIKE "JAZZ HARMONY"

WOW this is actually a close match. i do like hopes and dreams quite a lot but i always am still ANGRY at it because i LOOOOOOVE SAVE the World because its basically all the things i love about hopes and dreams but without the dumb beginning that i dont like!!! also hopes and dreams has the worst loop point in the entire game which is bizarre given how good the game is otherwise at playing around with the "forced to loop end to beginning" thing. soflan-chan has NANAHIRA VOCALS AAAAAAAAA and I actually have to listen to her in this unlike kanada where I listen to vocal static made out of her vocals noooooooo!!! luckily i still like the song under it enough to where i end up loving it, and that's helped by the fact that the lyrics themselves make a lot of funny self-referential jokes and thats cool lol. weird match but i like

WHOA Wyrm's Jewelbox is VERY cool!!! very rhythm game plus shmup-y which.... i guess makes sense since its a shmup kinda (in the same way senko no ronde is a shmup lol) i LOVE these synth choices and the trumpet and the FAKE PIANO THIS IS THE FAKE PIANO THAT IS MAYBE MY FAV INSTRUMENT EVER rhuzerv piano. holy crap I remember listening to this during noms and during pre-contest but i guess i never.... really LISTENED to it so like holy fuck actually paying attention to it now it's even cooler than i thought lmao. Thrashard in the Cave is ALSO WAY BETTER THAN I THOUGHT HELLO???? i think before i was like "yeah this is chill but i'm kinda like mmmmmmm okay cool sounds next" but rn it's like. wow i'm getting LOST in the SPACE ZONE this is not something i expect when listening to Sorta Fujimori music wowie! i definitely still have a clear preference for wyrm but like yeah wow. this match impressed me somehow

Hopes and Dreams is some top tier Undertale flexing. How did this not get retired already? Soflan-chan is pretty good too but way out of its league.

The Wyrm's Jewelbox is pretty generic RPG music, so this match comes down to how I feel about its opponent. And Thrashard is really cool, so there you go.

Oh now this is what ToC is all about! Two amazing songs here. Seize the Truth was the VGMC9 champion, right? I'm so proud of B8; that was back when VGMC was still routinely horrible, but they crowned a very deserving winner.

not feeling h&d as much as i probably should be if i want to even consider it over soflan today

maiden and spell is a cool game i'm surprised has been getting the recognition it has, but i'm glad it has. wyrm's jewelbox is a good song that's been growing on me considerably. steelplus's soundtracks for both it and one step from eden are legit and i'm glad i picked them up when i did. anyway this is like... i'm not really sure what to say about it. it's like, some weird child of touhou fighting game osts, a few desunoya soundtracks and murasaki (which uh, also feels appropriate given elements of how the game feels, putting aside the inevitable comparisons to senko/aos/etc). the former and middle in a lesser instrumentation that still works kind of sense, if that makes any sense, and then, in the latter sense, turning that sound far beyond conventions up to eleven and also there are some synths there too that are pretty strong. what i'm really saying is this catches me off guard hitting on elements i love, and that's not a one-off thing in this soundtrack for sure... meanwhile, thrashard in the cave (arranged)... hm. i recalled that i kind of liked this back when i ran through the gauntlet of nominations, but i didn't remember liking it this much. like woah this is two different moods at once of trippy space stuff and trippy chill stuff and they go together in a very specific way so as to properly give off both vibes at the same time like what the. it's COOL.

Hopes and Dreams vs Konran shoujo Soflan-chan!!: Hopes and Dreams feels like the Undertale standard. By now most of the soundtrack's power has worn off on me, and tracks like this just feel average to me. It does have one big plus and thats that it isn't Soflan chan. I don't even know where to start with Soflan. Its a less mind numbing version of Kanade that makes me wish I was listening to Kanade. I'm at a loss as to how to describe the rest of this track but as you can probably tell, I don't like it at all.

The Wyrm's Jewelbox vs Thrashard in the Cave (Arrange Ver.): Wyrm is cool in name and not in song. I spent most of the song wondering if it would ever do anything that I would really like but it never did. Still, the song is alright I guess. Thrashard in the Cave is a bit of a jam with how funky it is but there isn't any lasting appeal. Not bad still.

MATCH 1

Hopes and Dreams is a very nice song! I don't believe it's the credits theme, but it has that "hooray you've beaten the game!" feeling to it. Nice upbeat song with a good melody. Not a whole lot to say here.

I actually really like Soflan-chan too! I think it's a little more palatable to me than Speed Star Kanade because it doesn't have that distortion aspect to it that Speed Star Kanade has. I view this in kind of the opposite way that Tox sees this in that I'm paying attention specifically to the vocals in this song and not so much what's going on the background. My favorite part's 1:25-1:41 because I really like how it starts out. I'm not ashamed to say that I've listened to the full 9 minute version on several occasions haha. This is actually a close match, but I like Hopes and Dreams a little more overall.

MATCH 2

The Wyrm's Jewelbox is a really cool song! This song cycles through a lot of neat chord progressions that also makes the melody sound cool as it follows along to them. Some standout parts for me are 1:41-2:02 and 2:15-2:25 (mostly with that chord change at 2:23).

Thrashard in the Cave's pretty cool and not what I expected from a Castlevania song. Despite me thinking it's cool though, I feel like the more I listen to this song, the less interested I get. Not sure why because it should be the kind of song I enjoy, I feel, but that's just how it is.

MATCH 3

Good ol' Gust vs. Falcom match! And two very good songs at that. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I pick Gust here.

piano keysound quality like feryQUITOUS too good synth patches amazing and amazing sound design all around ....composition has this very ATMOSPHERIC tone even as it goes into it's more wild (and its more structured parts). cool thing where this has a followable pace like NEKOMATA MASTER throughout a lot of parts ...and i love ostinatos and i love fantasy...this does that so much!!

ATMOSPHEAR BUT ITS DRUM&BASS...HOW LOVELY.... the way the sounds waver in the beginning is so nice....putting this in my flywrench playlist!

Soflan-chan has a part that reminds me of Ebb & Flow from Splatoon 2 - arguably my #1 song from unarguably my #1 soundtrack of all time. Due to this, I can't actually enjoy this song because it breaks my brain hearing it. It's a shame because I definitely like the rest of it, but I can't just sit here and listen to it from start to finish without that one part ruining it.
