The Cold Science of Supremacy
Flotage (Stage3-B)

So this is something that I am absolutely overthinking and probably don't need to say but I hate the potential of being misunderstood and yesterday when I mentioned 1:31 of beyond the darkness I wasn't saying it was a moment I particularly enjoyed. Okay actual write up time. Sky of Twilight has a focus on vocals and electric guitar, but is pretty good otherwise, especially bits like 1:47. When the singer is not singing there is a pretty song scattered here. Meanwhile TCSoS is my kind of Dark & Mysterious song, it is those traits done quite well! Like :45 where the real main stuff starts happening, but also the stuff going down beginning at 1:46 where it all goes away and it returns to the emptiness it began with, a fluttering buzzing remnant shows face before the main stuff makes it's grand reappearance. Great dark mysterious stuff.

Dodonpachirisu was one of my favorite discoveries from BOST and this song is a part of the reason why it's pretty great harsh digital activity. the bye bye for now part seems laughably out of place it's like an old commercial sample seeming or something. Anyway the other song also known as Desert is much less my kind of thing for the vocal focus, more peaceful realistic instrumentations. Easy match for me.

skipping toc again probably

Sky of Twilight
Desert
NWO

Sky of Twilight is weird. It's good, but like -- it is so unrepresentative of the Eschatology soundtrack that it feels weird. And yet, it is also definitely gust and I can't hate it, but when you compare it to Colony Collapse Disorder or Sweet Reward or even Milk-Colored Pass, like -- how is this the same album? Boggles the mind. But then we get the "rekishi ha" line and the chord on the "wa" is so good it almost carries the song by itself.

Cold Science doesn't feel cold to me; it feels warm and fuzzy

Colony Collapse Disorder is the ultimate bees song. I'M A BEEEEEEEEEEE is a close second. this is at best third.

AKA DESERT aka this song totally has lyrics no matter what silly people may try to argue when i play it for them in real life. this song is magical and perfect and omg i'm so happy it made it in thanks folks who helped make it in. like it is just happiness incarnate and ultra warm and fuzzy. makes cold science seem downright COLD.

NEW WORLD ORDER we are the TAROT now persona 3 WISHES it could be this tarot. i have no idea how this is all i have to say about it.

amusement park is cool i guess but an ORDER (of magnitude) below NWO.

i give this day a beeuitiful/10

The Cold Science of Supremacy
Flotage (Stage3-B)
New World Order

I don't like the start of Sky of Twilight at all, but it's good once the instruments come in at the 19 second mark. ftw. Not a fan of the breakdown part either though. Cold Science's high points aren't as high, but it's consistently good.

Floatage is pretty alright. Desert's instrumentation is good but I highly dislike the "la"s instead of lyrics.

Two cool songs in the last match. Will be happy with either winning.

Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky - Sky of Twilight
Aka - Desert
Granblue Fantasy - New World Order

Vocals day!

MATCH 1

Not sure if I still like Sky of Twilight exactly as much as I did last year when I first heard it, but it's still an amazing song! Good enough that it skyrocketed to the bracket winner in my favorites bracket once again. Such a great song from start to finish. Really good melody that I love both during the harder rock portions as well as the softer portions. This leads me to the fact that I like how the song switches things up throughout the song and that each individual portion of the song is equally good. I remember some people saying last year that 3:05-3:47 felt out of place in the song, but I don't get that feeling at all. I view it as a distinct part of the song that sounds great and flows well in the song as a guitar solo section. And of course, I really like Kanako Itou's vocals, which really shines the most when there's harmonizing in her vocals like at 0:53, 1:36, and 5:56 (just to highlight a few parts, since there's vocal harmonizing pretty much the whole song). Even though it would be awesome to see some new songs that are just as good, I'm still more than happy to see this song come back because it's so good.

Hmm, I may be enjoying The Cold Science of Supremacy a little more than in the past like when I heard it in RtVGM. Things that sound dark, like this song, have some potential to be appealing to me depending on the direction the song goes in. In large part, I'd say this song doesn't really do anything exceptional, but I can enjoy it a bit in general. One particular thing to note that's cool is the chord change that happens at 0:49. I feel like if that chord change showed up in a different song that I liked a lot, I'd be really enthusiastic about it.

MATCH 2

While I don't like every Dodonpachi song I've heard, there are some really cool ones out there like Flotage. It seems that people don't really expect me to be a fan of the kind of music from these games, since when I decided to pick Vertigo for the crowdsourced VGMGG 200 in the discord server, there was a bit of surprise from some of the participants. But yeah, like I said, there are some great songs in these games! Flotage is another example of these neat electronic songs. Pretty cool song all throughout. I think the intro's especially nice. Perhaps the least surprising opinion from me regarding this song might be that 1:33-1:57 is my favorite part of the song. I just think this guitar solo's really good and it fits quite nicely among all the electronic stuff in the background.

I really like Desert! This is probably the song in this match that people would expect me to like. The intro to this song's super good. Really catchy world-sounding stuff there. The vocals and other backing instruments are very nice too. The other selling part of this song is definitely 0:58-1:36. Very emotional part in a way that I really like. That part definitely hit me when I first listened to this song during the nomination period. I didn't add it to my potential supports playlist but if this song was in danger of not making it in by the very end, I probably would've ended up supporting it. And honestly, it might've been a consideration had there not been so many great songs nominated.

Strong match here! Desert's the clear pick, so unfortunately, Flotage got a rough draw here. There are definitely plenty of songs I would've picked Flotage over but not this one. Bye for now, Flotage :(

MATCH 3

Now with New World Order, I'm amazed that I didn't support it during VGMC13--or at least I don't think I did--because I had this song as a bracket winner. I've seen some complaints about the vocals, but honestly, I don't have any issues with them. Like yeah, I can barely make out half the words they say, but I don't really care about that lol. I don't think I'm super picky about vocals usually, though, (opera vocals are the only vocals I tend to get picky about lol) so maybe that explains why I think they're fine. Another fantastic song from start to finish! Feels like you're flying through the clouds at a blinding speed. The violin in the intro is great, and once again, more harmonizing in the vocals like with the male and female vocals from 1:44-2:08. And then more awesome violin melodies right after that! With how much vocal opposition to this there was during last year's contest, I'm so happy that it went as far as it did! I almost forgot that it tied with its round 2 opponent before going on to win the bracket. By the time the rest of my favorites were out, I was pushing so hard for this to win the contest. Sadly, it couldn't beat Revenger, but being able to have my favorites bracket winner be the actual winner of that bracket was such a great feeling!

Machine celebration time! I never got to actually play Nier Automata myself, but I watched a no commentary let's play of it, and I was happy that the uploader didn't kill any of the machines in the main area because they're just having fun and they don't attack you! Anyway, Amusement Park is actually much better than I remember it being! Emi Evans' vocals are great and I really like the violin backing in this song! I'd say this is definitely among some of the better songs in this game, though not my favorite.

Sky of Twilight > New World Order > Desert > Flotage (Stage3-B) > Amusement Park (Dynamic Vocals) >> The Cold Science of Supremacy

Good day today! I liked every song here, but the top 5 are the really good ones. I'd say like all 7.5/10 or above for the top 5 songs today?

Sky of Twilight (23rd) vs The Cold Science of Supremacy (Eldan Theme) (185th)
Flotage (Stage3-B) (6th) vs Desert (150th)
New World Order [32nd] vs Amusement Park / Dynamic - Vocals [50th]

ANO SOOORAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA sky of twilight is such a bizzare existence in so many ways. Like, how did Shade end up on an Atelier project?? Alongside Yu Shimoda (who just came off of Inti Creates and Mega Man 9 and was actually picked up for Gust Sound Team, and later went on to ZUNTATA seriously what is this man's career) and Hiroki Kikuta his presence makes Eschatology just one of the craziest and coolest random combinations in a game's OST. Anyway, for the song itself its actually crazy how abruptly and rapidly it changes genre and tone and still manages to hold itself together so well and still flow despite Back and FOrth and BACk and FORTh and YUBISAKI WO NOBASHITEIRU NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. NI! Cold Science is actually a really cool sounding song; it succeeds with aplomb at the atmosphere I feel like it's setting out to create... but that's just not something I really take interest in haha. The low rating here is definitely deceiving on how "good" I actually think the track is, but it doesn't have anything in any way on Sky of Twilight imo.

H-HI FOR NOW H-H-HI FOR NOW i love flotage!!!!! i love Dododndonapdhai Daifukkatsu Black Label OST I am sorry I had to have Blue Reflection kill you!!! I LOVEVLO VE LOVE the sounds in this song so much, that lead synth with that INSANE vibrato that makes it sound almost erhu-ish or something and then A GUITAR THAT I LIKE??? HUH??? A SOLO THAT MAKES ME GO WOWOLWOWOWOSOSOJAUasfjjjjjjddpdfkbl as soon as it hits at 1:32 I'm like :----------O <- my jaw dropping to the ground this entire song is being in an underwater tube super metroid and the life around is swimming around madly and creating this light show that makes a rave inside the tube its so good. I like what Desert does but it's just kinda there I guess this is gonna be my shortest writeup because it's over and I'm bad to listening to flotage oops i need to listen to ToC what am i doing B-BYE FOR NOW B-B-BYE FOR NOW

oops two hours later i'm on the toc now. New World Order is very cool but it could be cooler and that makes me SAD but not too sad cause it's still very good!! Tsutomu Narita's style in Granblue in general is just very cool, very "old school jrpg" while also being very modern with the guitar. reminds me of what makes FF13 music stand out to me in a way but also is its own thing. I actually like the Quiet version of Amusement Park a lot more than Dynamic because I do not like the thought of EVIL KILLER CLOWNS HAHAHA HAPPY :) JUST KIDDING UR DED KIDDO amusement park in the background. But the vocals are classic Nier which is always very good so I cannot knock it too much. Either way New World Order would take it I think anyway oops!

Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky - Sky of Twilight
DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu Black Label - Flotage (Stage3-B)
Granblue Fantasy - New World Order

Match 1: It always trips me up hearing Kanako Itou singing in a Gust song. Still, this song is pretty sick. CSoS is utterly forgettable (this might be lower than Dreamy Somnom actually).

Match 2: I like both of these, this match is oddly close. So apparently Aka is a VN eroge, this whole time I thought is was another Korean MMO for some reason. Neat discovery though, shame to be voting against it so early. la la la la la la la

ToC: New World Order is great and should've never lost to that Fire Emblem song, go away amuzuarc park

The Cold Science of Supremacy
Desert
Amusement Park (Dynamic Vocals)

Sky of Twilight is my 110th favorite in the contest! I used to like this a lot more because I could focus on the little bits I liked. There's definitely stuff I like here, some bits with cool synths i like, cool abrupt key changes, I LOVE the absurd rock organ beating you up in hell prog section at 3:05-3:47, suddenly relaxing pads immediately following that, lots of bits i find cool. but it's mostly overwhelmed with the stuff i don't like...don't like the simple kick-snare-kick-snare drums at the faster sections like :18 and even less like how they're mixed. its a straightforward ANIME song in the end and, that's ok...I can like that sometimes, this does some things I like, and I'd still vote for it over only a bit under half the field, but it's not enough to win me over when it's against the at least 109 songs, I probably ranked this too high as is

The Cold Science of Supremacy is my [Ranking Topic Spoilers] 75th favorite in the contest! I suppose it's not much of a spoiler anymore since i'm already pretty much at the 7s now in my topic, this song is "at least a 7", so it is no secret now that I "like this song" to some degree. Anyways I probably shouldn't make a huge writeup about it since i'm going to do so there anyways, but I like this song. I like DARK atmospheres, and one of my absolute absolute top tier favorite dark atmosphere categories is like "evil lab" and that defines what this song feels like. This is extremely simple compositionally in some ways, unsettlingly so, and in this case that is actively to its benefit for me, even if i often talk as if i dislike simplicity. In this case the simplicity heightens the "dark laboratory" atmosphere x12000 because of its unsettling artificiality. It has very interesting sorta unconventional chord changes for sure, starts off with total transposition down 3 half steps for the first 3 chords, and then caps off each phrase with a very almost cartoonish SPOOKY HALLOWEEN (silver ermine) chord change that leads back to the start and holy shit is it effective here. some other similar stuff going on other places. chord progression actually strangely reminiscent of grant kirkhope (but like, the perfect dark side of his sound rather than banjo kazooie), I used to listen to perfect dark all the time because of seeking stuff that had an atmosphere similar to this (both effectively instrumentation-wise and note-wise). This sound design is crazy and enhances every cool thing about this. all the delay echoes, warpy pitch bendy scratchy synth sounds and bell-like synth patches paint such a vivid series of "you do not want to be in this evil lab place" pictures in my head it's absolutely perfect. Thank you for introducing me to this piece of music Ermine !!!!!!!!!!!!! Sad to see it being destroyed here : ( it's already on multiple personal playlists of mine. Probably my fav of the day... Expect an even more detailed writeup whenever i finally get to it in my topic

Flotage (Stage3-B) is my 144th favorite in the contest! Every Basiscape track in the contest is in my top 56...except for this one which is in my bottom 56! Ooops! Well they still got 6/7(?!) of them on my VERY good side to an extent that's almost overwhelming in its impressiveness. Anyways I love the chords and crazy futuristic electronic synth production of this I just HATE blues scale and that is why this is knocked down like 100 slots from where it would be otherwise. sometimes blues scale can sound effectively 'edgy' where i'll like it, sometimes it's like "the cool man" music, but sometimes i perceive it as "hokey old people music invading an otherwise cool song" and that is the case here, especially when it's used in a really inorganic way, really can't stand :50 - 1:02 for example. It feels to me like "How do you do fellow kids?!", someone trying to be hip and cool but it in such a mechanical way I can't take it seriously at all. To me pentatonic blues scale is a scale that if used has to be way more organic about presentation to not feel cheesy. I love like Jake Kaufman's and Shnabubula's frequent uses of it as some random examples, but you have to be that level of soloistic and "alive" for me to not think it as a literally stupid note sequence. The bit just before 1:26 bothers me for another reason (it feels like crypt of the necrodancer). anyways i don't think this is horrible music, I think it is "good" it just does things that i don't like, and if i ignore those elements what's left behind is some pretty cool stuff. neat track, but not for me, but i can't complain because 99% of basiscape's music is near tailor-made for me, they can't be perfect all the time! bye for now

Desert is my 96th favorite in the contest!!! Yaaay! I like this song ! I love the sitars...it's very pretty : ) I don't really have much of a reaction beyond like "I like the type of song it is" but I do! It's a pretty straightforward example of it but that's all it really needs to be to appeal to me when it's this style I guess. I guess the piano chords are really neat chill sorta jazzy voicings and I dig that fullness it brings to the table. Also one of my fav "90s production tropes (I know this isn't from the 90s (though I guess 2003 is close))" is the pitched down metallic sound at like :05 / :13 / :48 / :57 / 1:11 / etc. just love really distinct percussive sounds in that vein i guess! One other thing I guess I'll point out is i often notice how my favorite melodic content is stuff where the first two notes are very close together but the third note is way above the first two, this starts out its sitar part immediately that way. Also none of the notes are the same pitch class, but are actually pitch classes right next to each other, something about that, I just notice I tend to like melodies where it's like really distant notes from each other but all close together in pitch class? Like all 3 of those notes could be transposed to make a muddy cluster of dissonance, but spread apart sounds beautiful instead. I also love deserts and this sounds like one!!! la la lal al la oh wow this is apparently entry #83 to vgmdb?! WOW early bird

hot

New World Order is my 13th favorite ToC entrant! About half of why I like this track is that it always reminds me of one of my favorite prog bands, The Gourishankar. They're russian and have kinda similar "not entirely clear english" english vocals. but also the production is very similar, 90s synth presets mixed with more modern stuff! (Example: https://gourishankar.bandcamp.com/track/endless-drama ). I do like the shared elements in themselv

VERY close and i could last minute flip later if i decide to...but "being reminded of something else that I like more than the actual thing in the contest" is a less good reason to vote for something than actually liking what's presented in front of me here, so I'm going with Amusement Park. I'd probably come back to listen to NWO more often, but I definitely "actually like" amusement park much more

Sky of Twilight
Desert
Amusement Park (Dynamic Votals)

Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky - Sky of Twilight at 8.2 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! This one doesn't really do it for me for some reason. It's definitely not bad, at least. Lefty likes to complain about songs being disjointed. I don't think I typically agree... I guess I see his point here. I love Serpent Devouring which I know he hates. This I suppose is kind of held back by this style. It's not a huge issue, probably just one piece that helps prevent the whole from being completed. Hmm, maybe parts feel like bad Vocaloid instrumentals to me.
also the instrumental version is fucking hilarious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivSGRUmP-Uc

WildStar - The Cold Science of Supremacy at 7.8 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! I've listened to this song so many times because I know Ermine really loves it and I want to like it too, or at least figure out what he likes. And it never sticks. I literally have no idea what this is going to sound like almost every time I go to listen to it. It's like a science fiction plot or Memento where I'm cursed to drink dumb bitch juice every time I finish hearing it. It's not bad. It's not even unremarkable. It's even kind of cool! I just, for whatever reason, cannot retain this song.

DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu Black Label - Flotage (Stage3-B) at RANKING SPOILERS is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! Wow I love Manabu Namiki! Manabu Namiki, who composed this Manabu Namiki song, is my favorite Manabu Namiki artist in Manabu Namiki Basiscape. Wouldn't you agree deo????????

Aka - Desert at is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! Wow this has a short game/song combo!! Luckily, I love this song so much I can rank it without giving HINTS to how much I like Flotage. honestly i dont think this song is particularly good. I just like it a whole bunch.

Granblue Fantasy - New World Order at RANKING SPOILERS is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest! More ranking spoilers!! You killed my babies last year so I have to hate you go die

Nier: Automata - Amusement Park (Dynamic Votals) at 8.4 is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest! Memes aside this isn't bad. It actually does a lot of really cool stuff when I actually listen through it.

Cold Science of Supremacy
Flotage
Amusement Park

Sky of Twilight is a trash fire. Yeah, I get it, it's from Gust, so it could be the sound of gargling to rhythmically complex patterns and half the board would vote for it, but what is this song trying to be? It's the worst kind of cacophony: one whose separate parts might have been decent songs in their own right, but twisted into an unholy abomination. Cold Science is a snoozer but at least I could make it through the whole track.

Neither song in this match is great for me, but they're all right, which is already a lightyear ahead of the first match. The clincher is that I do not care for the breathy sound coming from the main vocalist in Desert, and I wish the backup vocal line with a more clear timbre were the main focus instead.

ToC continues to make great matches. Comparing the ToC today to the main bracket is like comparing creme brulee to two twinkies, the first of which has, somehow, spoiled. Went Amusement Park today, could have easily gone NWO yesterday or tomorrow.

The Cold Science of Supremacy
Flotage (Stage 3-B)
New World Order

First match was pretty weak. CSoS isn't very good, but Sky of Twilight is NOISE NOISE NOISE.

Flotage is pretty amazing. Desert's not bad either, but it didn't stand a chance here.

I was ready to write NWO off at first, but then I hit the 2:30 mark and had to control my laughter; I was like "I have to vote for this." And then I remembered that this is a ToC match! How the hell did this sneak past the voters long enough to retire?! Luckily Amusement Park was just okay.

Flotage > New World Order > Desert > Amusement Park > Cold Science > Sky of Twilight

*ranking topic spoilers*
Amusement Park (Dynamic Vocals)..........

Sky of Twilight (9.5) / The Cold Science of Supremacy (8.0)
Flotage (Stage3-B) (7.5) / Desert (7.5)

Middle match was a very tough decision... I hope it's not decided by one vote.

Voting in the last two matches was a waste of time for me. They are all like 3 or 4 out of 10, wooooo
