Connections to CT don't seem like a very important metric to judge the game by imo.

I did play it without knowing a Chrono Trigger ever existed, which was probably for the best.

I mean, you can't ignore it if you've played Chrono Trigger. The scene at Leene's Bell was like a kick in the nuts from the game devs. And the Kid/Schala stuff was pretty in your face at the end.

Playing it without having played CT would probably be a lot more enjoyable... but not as enjoyable as actually playing CT.

you know, I wonder if playing DQ11 before 8 does a disservice to 8. one of 8s major overhauls was the monsters and the animations and I think that sticks around long term for people who played it back when. if you play 11 first, I could see that major innovation feeling like no big deal.

Given how much I enjoyed the rest of your top four, maybe I should give N++ a spin at some point...

I played 8 before 11, I got about 10 hours into 8 and gave up, whereas I beat 11 on PS4 and Switch.

Even if I played Chrono Trigger first I doubt I would really care that much. The main plot of CC is itself a minor point to me. The game is so much more about vignettes and smaller stories and adventure.

I do appreciate the darker aspects of time travel repercussions that Chrono Cross explores. It's just weird for it to come at Trigger's expense, which is generally an upbeat and optimistic game.

I've at least seen a fair bit of 8 gameplay, long before I played 11, so I know how much of a leap it was over previous DQ games. I do think I'd end up inevitably preferring 11 even after playing 8 for basically that reason, though.

Just played the first case in Ace Attorney.

Is it weird that my first reaction is "holy shit this soundtrack is stellar"?

The humor and the animation are on point (it's crazy that this is almost 20 years ago), but good god the music brings it all home.

Wish I saved the writeups for the bottom half I made.

IV for me was unmemorable. It might be because I played it immediately between II and V, it might be because V and VI were such better games, it might be because the accents in the version I played were atrocious and I didn't care in the least about most of the characters in their individual chapters or when I got them back. The story was pretty hood, but the game felt overlong.

And whenever I saw old locations and ruins in V and VI, I didn't even think of the characters or story in IV. I'll likely have to give it a second go-round, but it just wasn't great. DQHeroes gave IV's characters more life and energy, imo.

As for II, I really found myself surprised by it. I liked the trio of heroes and descendancy destiny. The plot was solid and checking out Alefgard years later and what changed was excellent. I understand there are some insanely difficult moments requiring the Nintendo hotline in the original, and that there are some quality of life improvements to make those things solvsble in gsme without a horrendous amount of guesswork. The game flowed well, which is already a bonus against the start-stop elements of IV and the eternal grind of I. The dungeons were a good kind of old school confusing, where I made paper maps for the first time in ages to figure out where to go and which stairs led where.

The only moment of frustration i remember is needing to look up a FAQ early on to where the hell Prince Paul was after thinking I triple-checked every town and cave for him. Other than that, the game was quite fun.

Everything 11 and after has been horrible to rank so far, so just gonna throw a top ten games in here.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
2. Metal Gear Solid 3
3. Team Fortress 2
4. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
5. Umineko no Naku Koro Ni
6. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
7. Xenoblade Chronicles
8. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC
9. Metal Gear Solid
10. CrossCode

With a battle between nostalgia and new titles crowding 11 through.... 35?

I'm just going through my list of games played and putting them in a rough order one game at a time, and then I'll shuffle them around afterwards. We'll see how many I feel confident I can talk about after that!

I might do a general tiering for all the other games I've played that I don't actually feel like precisely ranking and talking about.

That's why I'm often more interested in game of the year or game of the decade lists. Less based on just nostalgia.

My lists don't have too much nostalgia. Heck, I think this decade would actually dominate pretty strong in the top level. My problem is that it's just some amorphous blob where I can swing games up or down like 4 spots either way even in the Top 10.

I'd be having second doubts about the order in the middle of the write-up, let alone actually posting or the next day lol.

I would almost call most 3-D Mario games action/adventure games with platforming elements. I know that's kind of a copout answer, but it's hard for a 3-D game to be strictly a platformer, I think.
