My job has a use it or lose it policy for vacation and sick time. The culture here also discourages taking off time or working from home. So I get 10 sick days per year but I can't really use them unless I actually need to :(

But we do get a $10 bonus for every month we don't call out sick, $50 for a quarter without a callout (Jan-March, April-June, etc.) and $200 for a year without a callout (I should be getting my third yearly bonus for this soon) as I've now worked here four years and only called out once.

This doesn't seem like a good idea. It just promotes coming into work sick and then getting everybody else sick.

Those bonuses are super small too. I didn't miss a day this month. Thanks for filling a quarter of my gas tank *eye roll*

Fortunately, I only get sick once every few years, and it's usually only for a few hours (stomach flu). I seem to be in the minority, but I don't think a cold is a very good reason to call out (at least in my situation at a call center in which I don't speak to customers). I can do my work just fine with a cold.

The bonuses are quite small. If you max out all the bonuses for a year, you have made $0.25 an hour more for the year. That's it, but at the same time, it's better than nothing (like all my previous jobs have done for perfect attendance).

Depends on the job. Some jobs actually are important for a society to function. Imagine if you had a heart attack and no ambulance could get to you in time because someone just decided they didnt feel like coming in that day.

That happens all the time. They find someone else to work more that day. My cousin is a doctor and he calls in sick once a month to take trips or due to a hangover or a headache

Also that company SUCKS at their job. They should be multiple staff to cover for vacations, sick days and if people are on lunch breaks or come to work late due to traffic or long line at Starbucks

In my line of work we are understaffed as fuck (all over the country to my understanding) so someone calling off makes a already dangerous job even more so. And my job is unfortunately necassary. If someone calls in and they cant find someone else guess who doesnt get to go home?

If im sick. im talking people abusing it because they just wanted the day off.

Unless its just a cold or something non contagious they dont want you coming in where I work. Sickness spreads easily at my unit due to how the air circulation in the buildings work

We get 14 vacation days a year and people still abuse their sick leave.

Exactly this. In America we have a serious problem with not being adequately staffed for the actual level of work. People will not hire the workers they actually need because they dont want to spend the money when they can just require other people to do MORE. If you cant take vacation days because you feel like your work place will be hectic without you there, its understaffed, regardless of if you have an open position or not. People being called in on their off days for staff coverage, people being expected to stay multiple hours late, or perform two job duties all day as coverage are all bullshit staffing issues that honestly should never happen- short of a major percent of your workforce calling out the same day for whatever reason. Thats why vacation time is scheduled the way it is, to keep manageable work flow.

No, I have well over 40 days of sick days. Might as well let them stack incase I get sick since I ger plenty of personal days off too. Currently have about 18 of those. I can also use the sick days to count towards my years worked for my pension when I retire.

the alternative being, you work every day, get nothing to show for it.

I'm on a contract, My raises are negotiated for by the Union, else we would literally get no raises. They're not giving me anything for accumulating all this extra time off, and in some cases I even lose it. Why should I not use my paid time?

Nah, my job entails committing to calling customers back. Guilt, frustration and pride are powerful forces; I'd rather someone else not have to fill in for me, confuse my customer, or second-guess my plan (leading to more work). If I'm sick, I'm sick. If I'm planning time away, I'm already choosing which hands my work goes into ahead of time.

I accumulate my sick leave (no limit) and I can carry only so much annual leave (I forget how much) at any given time.

I use 2 weeks worth of annual leave each year for vacation, and I call in only when I truly don't feel well. If I call in more than 3 days in a row, I have to provide a doctor's note.

Sure my job isnt necessary if you dont mind murderers and rapist running the streets. You could have mob justice but then innocnents would be getting killed where as if they end up in prison they at least have a chance at proving their innocence and being released. Got a guy right now trying that. Went in for rape despite the fact no dna evidence of him was found period on the girl or at the scene of thr crime.
