Depends on the job. Some jobs actually are important for a society to function. Imagine if you had a heart attack and no ambulance could get to you in time because someone just decided they didnt feel like coming in that day.

That happens all the time. They find someone else to work more that day. My cousin is a doctor and he calls in sick once a month to take trips or due to a hangover or a headache

Also that company SUCKS at their job. They should be multiple staff to cover for vacations, sick days and if people are on lunch breaks or come to work late due to traffic or long line at Starbucks

Exactly this. In America we have a serious problem with not being adequately staffed for the actual level of work. People will not hire the workers they actually need because they dont want to spend the money when they can just require other people to do MORE. If you cant take vacation days because you feel like your work place will be hectic without you there, its understaffed, regardless of if you have an open position or not. People being called in on their off days for staff coverage, people being expected to stay multiple hours late, or perform two job duties all day as coverage are all bullshit staffing issues that honestly should never happen- short of a major percent of your workforce calling out the same day for whatever reason. Thats why vacation time is scheduled the way it is, to keep manageable work flow.
