I don't think you can make a very good case that Biden doesn't care about working class Americans. You can argue that you think Bernie's plans will be better than his, sure, but that's a very different statement.

Biden might care for them -- but he won't actually help them. (Neither will Republicans, for that matter). And when they see that, they'll switch back to Republican. Even if it's someone as despicable as (or worse than) Donald Trump.

The cycle goes on and on. Democrats don't do enough --> Voters become disillusioned --> Voters become Republicans --> Republicans really fuck things up --> Voters become disillusioned --> Voters become Democrats ---> Democrats don't do enough etc.. etc...

I mean a large portion of voters have made up their mind for the 2024 election already. Split into the Blue Team and the Red Team. It's the Purple Guys who decide elections, and they aren't the type that have everything going well for them under the status Quo.

I like Bill. I think he loves the country and the working class but listened to some bad advice over the years who told him he could sell out his principles for money without hurting the working class.

It's why I support dramatically increasing the presidential salary, especially for a 2nd term president. If Bill was making a billion USD a year as POTUS and got 100M a year as a pension, he maybe wouldn't have felt the need to give speeches to Wall Street for 300k a pop.

I was actually reading about the Virginia constitutional convention in 1861. Apparently when the elections to choose the delegates was held in January, about 2/3 of the delegates elected were unionists. Things changed dramatically after Fort Sumter, when President Lincoln demanded that the remaining states in the Union (including Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee) send him troops to fight the states that had left. Enough delegates couldn't countenance fighting their countrymen that they felt they had to vote for secession. President Lincoln also sent the delegation the Virginia convention sent to negotiate with him away with no deal or sign of one.

Somewhat shockingly, apparently a former governor of Virginia who was a prominent delegate on the secessionist side ordered an extralegal group of militia to attack and seize the Federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry. He told the convention that his soldiers were already on their way to attack federal troops and it would happen no matter what they did. That is of course treason when the convention had not yet voted to leave the Union, and you'd think they wouldn't have taken well to the usurpation of their authority. But it seems it had the effect of making delegates believe that war was inevitable now that shots had been fired.

Anyways, I think it's remarkable how President Buchanan allowed the constitutional conventions to go forward across the South. Lincoln didn't take office until March 1861, so there was a run of several months where the US federal government more or less accepted that the Southern states were free to hold constitutional conventions to secede if they wanted to.

It's weird. Essentially, a majority of Parliament does not have confidence in Boris Johnson's government and have voted against everything he has proposed. In the past, that would be considered a vote of no confidence and the majority group in Parliament would take over or a new election would be called. Whatever happened, there would soon be a government that held the confidence of Parliament.

The Fixed Terms Parliaments Act changed that by making the criteria to have an election much harder. Now the people with no confidence in the government need to affirmatively vote to say that. But it appears that they don't want to do it because they don't have any better ideas for what to do than Boris does, and it's convenient to keep him as PM to soak up the blame. It's like Republicans voting to keep Obama in office while blocking all of his bills and appointments because they don't have any better ideas and they want to keep their favorite scapegoat around.
