Its kind of ironic that I want to believe that the Mandela Effect is something more than just collective misremembering, but I actually remember what happened to Nelson Mandela correctly

I've experienced the Mandela effect. I've also been told I have excellent memory. I however do remember Mandela living and becoming President of South Africa.

But I KNOW it used to be Jiffy peanut butter. I just thought they changed the name to Jif like how Sunny Delight changed to Sunny D. (or how Mountain Dew is now Mtn Dew)Apparently it was always Jif. Weird.

that's a weird mistake to make to me. iirc you're older than me, so maybe you were already done watching kids shows by the time that "choosy moms choose jif" commercial aired? but i've seen that thing way too many times for me to even consider that it was once "jiffy."

No I am not. My sister always liked Skippy. I knew they were different. People say "Jiffy" is mixing up Jif and Skippy, but I know about Skippy.

I do remember the "choosy moms choose jif" commercial. That was from the 90's. I'm talking before that. I remember seeing that commercial in the 90's and thinking "I guess they changed the name" Way before Mandela Effect even had a name.

Edit: I'm 37 Xuxon. My husband also remembers Jiffy and he is 42.

Jiffy Pop? Yes, we did eat popcorn all the time. That could be it. My dad could have put the label on a jar of peanut butter or something. He does joke quite a bit. I've sang song lyrics so much that my dad sang only to find out they were not the real lyrics. (he does this with a straight face too)

I think its just like that thing in your brain that lets you read words even when the letters are out of order or something. Nowhere else do you see a name that ends in stain, but you constantly see ones ending in stein, so unless you really stare at Berenstain your mind just glosses over it and you assume you saw Berenstein.

Because seriously nothing went down. Theres no alternate universe where everything is the same except for small differences that are easily made spelling mistakes.

I mean I pronounced it like Bernsteen bears so neither spelling really matches. Probably why it doesnt bother me, I obviously learned the pronunciation from my parents.

I mean I was like 6 I don't think I had seen names that ended in "stein" either at that point.

Frankenstein, I guess?

Certainly not enough to make some sort of pattern-- I mean as far as "stein" endings being super common to children that would remember it this other way I don't think they are.

I think berenstain is just a case of something that was widely mispronounced, and the people who learned it the wrong way have a difficult time accepting that they might have just been wrong one time when they were six years old.

Does it have to be a collective misremembering for it to count?

I played Magic; the Gathering as a kid. On the back of the cards I distinctly remember the 5 colors, in WUBRG order, starting from the top, going counter-clockwise around in a circle.

Apparently it was clockwise this entire time! I have no idea why Id misremember something like that. Even though I know its wrong, whenever I visualize the color pie, black is in the bottom left and green in the top right, and so on.

Ive never heard of anyone else making this mistake. Its weird!

if the options are you saw more stein names than you realize by the time you were six or were in a parallel universe where everything is the same except for one letter in the name of some fictional bears then im definitely picking the first option as the most likely scenario

alternately to just seeing names, its possible you heard adults or someone call it Berenstein before you actually read it yourself and then just assumed that was right. Like your mom says oh Lopen, I bought you this Berenstein Bears book and then you dont think twice about it.

I think the name Berenstain only shows up on the cover since its the name of the authors and not the last name of the bear family so theres not much reason for a kid reading the books to look closely at the name.

oh man this mandela effect is new information to me

i'm now convinced it's real

when i was a kid, i genuinely believed "guardian" was spelled "gaurdian". "Guard" is "gaurd'. Then one day when I was around 12 suddenly it was guard. I thought someone spelled it wrong and was like "lol that's not right, it's gaurd. It's always been gaurd." but then i checked everywhere and every piece of literature said guard. Even the flying units in Starcraft were Guardians... but I was sure they said Gaurdian before. Gaurd just made more sense to me. If it starts with gua it would be gwardian, like guacamole. but it's more like garden.

Even today, it makes me a little bit uncomfortable to see guardian spelled the way it is. I crossed a world line for sure.

I was watching a clip from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" the other day where they mention "milksteak." I Googled it to find out what that was, only to find nothing but references to the show.

Now I could have sworn that "milksteak" was a term I've been hearing since childhood, as something that people ate back in the 50's. Either an archaic way to refer to a specific cut of beef, or just a really cheep type of meat people used to eat. I think I'm just conflating the term with beefsteak, but this is the only Mandela thing I can remember outside of the Bears.
