Also I read the full 9000+ character writeup. I dont play Blizzard games much but I was entertained of how it was written.

I will agree that I never understood how people can level in MMOs it gets so boring quickly. Apparently the fun is at end level but whats the point when lots of the 'story' is doing repetitive boring ass fetch quests and walking to places?

Reading that analysis was pretty funny...more for the funny-bad parts admittedly, but funny. I do enjoy these analysis for the most part though, so hopefully the next one comes out solid.

Really though even aside from anything else, I usually like the writeups that are more match focused, which this one...certainly is not.

Zach has been pretending he's able to troll me for years, but he keeps forgetting I can see IP addresses on the B8 wiki, I caught him lying about it, and now he's just bitter that he can't 'beat' me or whatever. I was eagerly awaiting that mega-writeup. Instead, I'm left confused and a bit disappointed. This wasn't up to your usual quality in these topics, Ulti. I'm used to your writing having a bit more weight and, well, fun to it, not a bunch of regurgitated and off-topic cliches burdening the substance of your subject.

Side note: The picture in the MtG part of the writeup actually comes from one of the main places I play at. The MtG folks are almost never the problems there though; it's the Yugioh brats.

Finally made it through the wall myself.

I know Fox isnt much of a character himself, and certainly is one of the strongest Smash vote recievers, but that still doesnt make him into a Ness, though. Early-oughties Pokemon backlash or not, he still managed a doubling on the currently Noble-Nine-honor-offending Pikachu back in 2003.

Single player was bad. Multiplayer was infinitely worse. There was no balance to speak of, and almost no units outside of heroes mattered.

Can't say I totally agree with the assessment of Warcraft III, at least single-player wise. There's a clear reason Starcraft remained the multiplayer standard after WC3's release, but I felt the hero system allowed for some interesting mission-based campaign encounters. Stuff like The Culling, the final Night Elf Mission, the invasion of Alderaan, the defense of Kel'Thuzad summoning Archimonde - those specific scenarios played to the strengths of the hero-focused engine and benefitted for it. Now, as a follow-up to Warcraft 2 and Starcraft, yeah there's quite a big issue, and it's telling that a fan-made mod had SIGNIFICANTLY more impact than the actual game it was centered around.

But I have a lot of good memories that I do attribute to Warcraft 3, or at least the tools given to make it enjoyable, since the Map Editor was included and such a big part of my personal experience with the game. And it's hard to separate "Warcraft 3 Map Editor" as its own game instead of just saying "Warcraft 3", at least moreso than separating, say, Half-Life 1 and Team Fortress Classic or Counter-Strike.

Always nice to hear raw emotion, though. Even if I disagree, it's always good to hear another perspective. Plus the Activision-ing of Blizzard lately has been rrrreally rough. And by 'lately' I mean 'the last decade, but Overwatch was nice for a while'.

I did read the paragraph. But seeing the detour into politics still irked me. (God, the election was horrible. Only thinking of the new president might be worse)

The Vikings are in Heroes of the Storm, so a few people might recognize them now. Blizzard is sleeping in getting the games in the Nintendo eShop or remastering them for PC! (though apparently the first is a free download on Battle.net)

Regarding your Warcraft 3 + TFT writeup...

Sorry but it's hard to agree with you.
Yes, you are right about ladder games sucking, bad. You are right that heroes take too much out of the fun. You are right that Blademaster is the most broken piece of shit in the world. And you didn't even mention how Upkeep is a terrible terrible mechanics

But saying the campaign is shit is unforgivable.
There is not a single RTS campaign that is as good as Warcraft 3/TFT was.
The story was good and interesting, the quests were varied and unique, every mission gave you something to look forward to like a new unit or a new hero or whatever.
Heroes were strong too but not super broken because they limit the level depending on the mission. Hard mode was actually hard
It was full of easter eggs and secrets, the cinematics kicked ass, and even the Upkeep didn't bother too much when it was in a single player campaign

You also refused to give credit to custom maps and it's also dumb. World Editor IS Warcraft 3. You can't just consider it as a standalone product.
World Editor wasn't perfect but it was one of the strongest video game modding tool in the market. People did a lot of crazy shit. Modded Pokemon and Naruto models into the game, put Linkin Park songs in Run Kitty Run, and IceFrog doing some crazy shit with basing all Dota unique skills on boring generic Warcraft 3 skills, like Shadow Fiend ultimate being a altered version of Fan of Knives and Auras based on that and shit
World Editor deserves every single credit. You buy Warcraft 3, you get hunderds of hours of fun. The models are all from Warcraft 3. The engine is Warcraft 3. You can't ignore it.

To me it feels like you hated the ladder so much (and rightfully so) that it made you blind hate everything else.
If you were a bit more honest and willing to give the campaign and the World Editor the credit they deserve maybe your opinion would have been credible
Now it just feels like a blind hate, or just you refusing to give "Blizzard after Lord Of Destruction" any credit even if they actually did something good

I agree with this. Considering how reductive, conformist and anti-intellectual so much of the Internet has become, I can't help but enjoy these Archie Bunker-esque diatribes Ulti goes on. They're a nice change of pace even when they're the size of a peer-reviewed journal article, like this one.
