A decent although unspectacular main character. The Raid is a fantastic film, but Rama isn't out of this world interesting or anything.

Randy Marsh (South Park)

Rating: 83 out of 100

The perennial court jester of the South Park cast, Randy is a perfect foolish everyman character on a show where the introspection belongs to the young'uns. Whether he's drunkenly berating the police for attempting to quash his post-election fun or drunkenly berating baseball fans for a myriad of fictional reasons, Randy has always represented the most ignorant aspects of American society in a sharply satirical way, and I appreciate that sort of unforgiving lampooning.

Rating: 70 out of 100

If all of the fictional thunder gods that have crossed over with the DC Universe, this is my second favorite. And only by a hair! Raiden has a very bizarre personality that has always felt very particular to him and him alone; I've really never seen another character like him in another medium (although it's not like I'm some sort of encyclopedic index of the entirety of fiction), and I've always dug his demeanor and his ability to get down and dirty with the rest of the MK rabble when necessary.

Harold Hill

Rating: 98 out of 100

One of my favorite characters in musical history, Harold Hill is both phenomenal as a period piece character and also a perfect example of the charming rogue. The development of Hill is endearing and the charisma of Robert Preston in the role was able to turn an inherently awful character into an strangely unlikely hero. Hill straddles a line of condescension and earnestness in every lie he weaves, and the result is just fantastic. It's clear that, if you were ever going to be bamboozled by someone, Hill is the one who will make you feel the best while it happens. And that's a bizarre contradiction of terms, yet it still somehow works throughout The Music Man.

I agree! And the way he uses singing to distract people from finding out his dark past is so great and meta.

Sheva Alomar (Resident evil 5)

Rating: 73 out of 100

I think Sheva scores extremely well in spite of a fairly lukewarm playing experience embodied in Resident Evil 5. Sheva is a character that I'd like to see portrayed in a different medium before I really go all in on my opinion; the RE5 experience just seems like it demands a cinematic expression rather than a gaming one.

The Happy Mask Salesman (Majoras Mask)

Rating: 71/100

For a fairly minor character in the Zelda mythos with not much screentime, this guy really lands a striking impression. The pinched face and squeezed eyes convey to me a pained person hiding behind a mask of their own, an emotional wall that only is rarely breached. The sight of his anger in the Clock Tower is something that has always stuck with me because it was a rare moment of unbridled honest emotion conveyed in a very dark and mature way in the Zelda series. Zelda has always been a series that I think hides a lot of complexity behind its fairy tale nature, and HMS is a good example of this subtle depth.

A Mary Sue sort of character, I never found myself thinking of Jerry as interesting or enjoyable in any way. I relate to the story of perennial second banana fuck-up Tom. I feel his plight and can understand his position. Jerry has X-Pac heat with me. I never want to see him succeed because he's built on success. He's kind of an unentertaining asshole.

Frasier Crane

Rating: 81 out of 100

Frasier is actually a tough character to rate because he has evolved a lot over the what? 20 seasons of TV he was on. But at the same time, there was a level of two-dimensional sitcom safety attached to Cheers and (to a lesser extent) Frasier that I think held him back from having the sort of emotional connections that I had with characters like Michael Scott or Chris Traeger on less traditional sitcoms. I think that his personality is such a burst of color and flavor though that he stands as extremely unique and utterly memorable. That's probably all due to KG's masterful performance.

Link (Zelda)

Rating: 89 out of 100

Link is partially a player window into a game world, something that I think is hard to accomplish across multiple generations without massive overhauling. I think it's a testament to the creators and designers of Zelda games that this system continues to appeal thirty years in. But Link is also a legend of folklore that most of us want to believe. The once and future king. The hero that rises in the time of crisis. Link is an antibody response to the illness of Ganon as it rearises and spreads across the Land of Hyrule. One of my favorite concepts is to take a natural archetype and say, "There is a reason this is an archetype" right in the middle of the story. Link is unabashedly party to that sort of storytelling. Legend of Zelda is about Link because the story needs a hero both in the story and of the story and for the story. On multiple levels, the concept of Link, the concept of you as a player, the concept of a savior, recurs because it's the natural function of Hyrule and a natural function of longterm storytelling. I love it.

Rating: 64 out of 100

I love the concept of Deathwing, and with the right artist in front of the character, I think the design can be excellent. The idea of an alternate reality spilling all of its embarassing secrets right into the middle of a long-established continuity-heavy world is fantastic, and I can't think of an example before this one in comics. Deathwing is actually a character concept I would love to play around with if I ever had the chance to write a Titans title. I think the potential is there. The execution was not well-handled, but I can't fault the overall construction of the character.
