Every opportunity he had

Would only dish out physical punishment for misbehaving - spankings turned into a stick turned into a jockeys whip, holding me and my little brother underwater when we got into a fight during a camping trip.. now that I think about it, I remember him slapping my face when I burped at a BBQ..

But mentally it was all the time, everything from being a loser, idiot, failure all the way up to 23. There was no pleasing that man.

Didnt support the family, wouldnt let my mum work.. her role was to look after 3 kids and feed us on welfare while he spent thousand and thousands of dollars on himself

Once the kids were done with school she got a job and has been there for 17 years now, now my Dad is telling her to quit so he can get more welfare money

Anyway, yeah, wish my brothers would move outta there and grant him the only thing he's ever wanted from us - to leave him and mum alone

My mom would smack me if I did something bad and my dad would pop my hands whenever he caught me lying about something. I got more smacks from my mom but they weren't really painful, I would feel bad about whatever I did afterwards though. However, my dad's hand poppings, while infrequent, were absolutely brutal and I made sure never to lie to him again.

This. The threat was usually more than enough, and even when I did get a beating, it wasn't much more than a traditional spanking (occasionally with a belt). I was a little bastard as a kid, but I was also extremely well-behaved unless I thought it was an absolute lock I wouldn't get caught doing whatever it was I wanted to do wrong. The worst he ever did was basically choke-slam me into a laundry basket when I was a teenager because I was really pushing boundaries hard.

If my father had ever actually beaten me legitimately, I would have been dead. For the first 15 years or so of my life he was a hard motherfucker, and I probably wouldn't have stood a chance against him even if I had a gun. But he wasn't one of those guys who always feels like they have to prove themselves - he knew damned well he could kill most people he met, so he didn't start fights, and he was generally pretty good at defusing them.

The fact that he could put a fist through a wall (or a door, or break a chair) when he was ultra-pissed helped keep that fear fresh, though (not that he was doing that constantly, but it happened a few times). If I'm honest, if he'd been a total pushover or the sort of parent who absolutely insists on trying to reason with kids and not hit them in any way, I would have been an uncontrollable little shit.

My dad tries to mentally and emotionally abuse me until this day. My grandfather did the same before he died. These are the only two people I ever laid hands on; both of them I grabbed by the neck and pinned them to a wall because it was the only way they would listen to me. And on both occasions I ended up running away from home right after.

Okay, man, I'm not one for humblebrags but I know that I can easily say I'm within the top 10% of my age group for "overall life quality" and not getting slapped or worse as a child probably helped a bit with that. By that I mean, never been in a physical altercation or fired from work or anything like that.

I truly, honestly feel bad for children whose parents are too impatient and too unwise to try and explain a situation or discipline without violence. Children mimic their parents as they grow older and while they may not resort to violence, they definitely will think that they can just brute force their way through life, which will nearly always blow up in their face.

My dad left when I was 2 and my brother was born.

My mom didn't want to parent and was in and out of mental institutions.

So didn't have discipline, structure or any kinda parenting as a kid.

I certainly got hit alot for the first 10 years of my life or so, we moved from one project to another every 3 months or so (my mom always said it was to avoid my dad, but later in life I figured that probably was not the reason). Once I got to Jnr High though I started fighting back, took kick boxing and judo at the Police Athletics League and playing sports.

Sports changed my life cause before that I just read books and didn't have friend or interact with anyone pretty much. Got involved in a Pickle Ball tournament at my jnr high and came in second and that started me down the path of both playing sports, and actually making friends.

Still read though, almost a book a day until I got married.

Spankings, belt, and slaps at first. Then it turned into groundings Butters style. Having had a terrible memory my whole life, they'd ask me to do a chore, I'd forget, and I'd get grounded. I've literally been grounded more than half my teenage life because I'm the kind of person that forgets how my middle name is spelled.

Oh, and when my parents caught me with porn they made sure everyone in the near family knew to intentionally humiliate me, because hell is a "serious" thing "serious" people take seriously.

Wow, look at how well we all turned out? We're all posting on gamefaqs. I'm just fighting off anxiety attacks 24/7. I was an asshole to 3 of my friends today, I have a second sociopathic personality, and I can't remember what I had for breakfast. I'd say hardass parents know what they're doing.

Having your arse smacked as a kid is fine but some parents take that way too far and basically use their kids as a punchbag for their own miserable existence. That's until they become old enough to beat the shit out of their parents back. With that said I've never actually smacked my dad at all. It's just simply something I wouldn't do. Not out of fear but simply because I'm against the idea of beating the shit out of close family members and I'm not a fan of physical violence to begin with. I think mental abuse is much more damaging anyway. My dad still tries to do that shit now at times but he's not smart enough to do it so.

Dad had a boat paddle or wooden pizza peel he would use. Only if I really deserved it and did something bad. Honestly don't think there is a right or wrong answer to the spanking issue. It depends on the kid. If all my dad did was take something away or ground me I wouldn't care. Because of what he did I am a well adjusted, fairly successful adult. And we both get along great.
