Not as much as I used to, but as I play more RPGs than anything else, I definitely still do. Lately I'm finding my questions answered more often on the boards (or reddit/wikia/youtube) though.

It's been a while since I've actually played a game that would require me to look something up at all.

I can think of a couple older games where I still use the FAQs for information reference whenever I go back to play them.

Yes, because these new-fangled video guides can fuck right off. I don't need an easily-distracted twerp with a nasally voice taking ten hours to badly explain something that I can read in five seconds.

CTRL + F = good
Randomly clicking through the seek bar until a bit looks familiar but... no, they've apparently just come back to this area after already finding the thing I'm looking for in a previous video and now I have no idea what this bit is supposed to help with... is he talking about his cat now? = bad

Not nearly as often as I used to. The game boards are still pretty helpful for linking to detailed resources like community spreadsheets for RPGs or searching up a quick answer on a specific topic. Most of my FAQ reading these days is only for games I'm looking to 100% that don't have wikis or spreadsheets, which works out to be a pretty small portion of the games I play these days.

Oh right, yeah. Those Google spreadsheets are also becoming a prominent thing for helping with RPGs and making big fancy FAQs more irrelevant.

here's a post I made just two weeks ago about the same thing

the ability to look up information in a text based guide or even on a forum where someone already asked the question has a lot of value. Allen recently overhauled the search feature to make it work really smoothly, too, so I think there is some merit to believing that there is a demand for this out there.

meanwhile, video guides have become less and less convenient over time... not more convenient. now if you want to look up a video guide for something, well, good luck brother. oh you searched for a specific game and boss? here's 20 results of random wannabe youtube celebrities doing an LP of the game. good luck searching for the relevant timestamp to show the moment where they're actually fighting the boss, and providing no helpful information or insight but instead just responding to their twitch chat which is spamming emotes.

did you find an actual guide video? okay. well here's a full 30 second loader with obnoxious music, now a guy is going to explain something to you that you don't want to hear with a really droning voice for about two minutes straight. did you like and subscribe? be sure to SMASH that like button and join the notification squad. okay, now I'm gonna explain the thing to you that I could have explained in 10 seconds. and here's another outro logo with obnoxious music.

at some point people gotta be thinking 'man I could have just looked this up on gamefaqs much faster and have the information written down right in front of me.' the fact that this site still gets a lot of views, specifically from people who search for actual game guides and such, is proof of that.

Yes, I still use the site often. I only look elsewhere if the game isn't well-represented here(modern or niche) or if it is one of the rare things that is better explained in a video (like an achievement guide or something).

For newer games, I'll search the message board first. Recently, such as with Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest 11, the information I'm looking for is in a sticky which in turn led to a nice informative Google Spreadsheet.

For older games, sometimes I have to dig through an older full text FAQ, but hey, as someone else said, that's what ctrl-f is for. Also, there's something strangely nostalgic about going to the FAQ page of a game and seeing A l e x did a guide for it. I always liked using his guides.

I use wikis sometimes, but I'm a little hesitant to do so since they often have more information than I care to have at the time. Spoilers and such.

Wikias for a lot of games since it offers both text and usually a picture of an important location.

Sometimes they'll have a video of a mission/quest at the bottom too. So the options are nice.

Gamefaqs I prefer to use for one off questions about a game.

the hate for video walkthroughs is dumb

usually when you find them in wikis/reddi they come with timestamps that take you to the relevant moments

Yeah through those you can find some ok video walkthroughs.

But a general search on YouTube or Google will often spit out the kind of video walkthroughs that deserve the criticism.

I agree with you 99% of the time, but I still find video guides (with no commentary) work well for directions when written instructions fail due to poor writing (author) or reading comprehension (me).
