i voted for the "unique" option for ALttP Randomizer (and Mario Kart 64 once a year). i also used to watch Starcraft and Melee but not in years.

I watch/participate in a lot of speedrun racing obviously but I don't think it's an esport because esports is like... this whole culture unto itself that I am 100% not a part of

Currently fighting games, but the real answer is that I just like watching eSports for whatever game I myself play.

Back when I was super into FPS's I loved watching MLG Halo matches, and I eventually moved on to watching League of Legends when I started playing that instead. Now the only competitive game I really play is Smash, which is mainly what I watch now.

Though it is worth mentioning I only play Smash 4 but enjoy watching both Smash 4 and Melee. I've also in the past enjoyed watching MvC and DBFZ even though I don't really play those at all. Not sure on what the reason there is.

Melee & speedrunning. Speedrunning's kind of like the track & field of eSports where you don't have people directly competing against each other and affecting each other's play, but you can have real-time races and battles for records that can span years.

Gun to my head, I'd say fighting games.

DOTA 2 has higher highs, I think, but it's harder for me to sit down and commit to watching it outside of the few big majors every year. Fighting games are a much easier watch to me, so they win out on consistency I guess.

I watch a good bit.

Mostly hearthstone but I used to watch a lot of StarCraft. I still try to tune into major fighting hand tournaments but I'm not as up on which players are relevant like I used to be.

My interest in league comes and goes.

Honestly MOBA is borderline unwatchable too but it has some hype moments at least.

On the day to day, the game I watch the most is Hearthstone, and it's primarily due to the fact that it allows the player/streamer the ability to constantly talk and interact with the chat at a casual pace. It makes for a more engaged and enjoyable experience for me personally. I definitely tune in to major fighting/MOBA/etc. tournaments and speedrunning events, though.

Fighting games are the only eSports stuff I ever watch (unless you count speedruns, since that seems to be a thing in this topic, I watch those occasionally too)

i mean, i think the whole term "eSports" is kind of inherently dumb anyway, but it exists, so why not define all e-competitions in such? certainly running and swimming races are considered sports, so the idea that this wouldn't extend to speedrun races is pretty bizarre

It's like, a thing, generally involving games that involve direct competition and that have like major events and streams and sponsors and shit. they're sort of actually run like professional athletics

There is plenty of direct competition in speedrunning. People are always bettering each others WRs or trying to win race tournaments.

GDQ could be considered that event you speak of if they just had a few slight easy tweaks. One would be to just keep a GDQ record for every category. The second would to have a competitive racing block.

A couple of the top runners on twitch are now sponsored by and on esports teams. I know they are few and far between but it exists.

I regularly watch every significant Hearthstone event, and I care about pro Hearthstone players more than players in any other esport, so that's probably my favourite.

Nothing beats watching a big fighting game tournament, like Evo, though.

I don't really think it's similar to marathon running. A marathon would be kinda like watching four speed runners running at the same time. Something like Golf you can watch one guy go through all the holes and appreciate the game if you really want to.

I mean I think watching golf and marathons are both the pits so neither one is really perfect.

It's more like watching American Ninja Warrior or American Gladiators or something. Those are sports, right? Maybe? I dunno.
