So you're okay with comparing rioters being pepper sprayed to somebody being raped?

I'd just like to go full on record here that you're saying rioters being pepper sprayed is literally torture that should be compared to rape.

There's something seriously wrong with you if you think police pepper spraying rioters that refuse to stop is on the same level as somebody being raped.

I think you might need to go back and reread the arguments people, including yourself, are actually making, instead of the version of their arguments that only exists in your head.

if the police is literally torturing you that's not too far off from rape, no.

I asked if we're comparing rape to dealing with the police. Lasa responded with that. I responded that I wasn't talking about literally torturing somebody, to which you responded with

Implying pepper spray IS torture. So unless I'm reading it wrong, you're supporting the thought that pepper spraying is "not far off" from rape. I even asked for clarification

The problem is you're assuming that the people on the receiving end of pepper spray really are dangerous rioters just because the police say they are.

Sometimes, sure, but often it's just hard to believe them.

No, actually, my post is clear that in the question/scenario proposed, they are, in fact, rioters, so...

I'm not trying to trap you, I'm asking a question.

Do you, personally, think pepper spray is torture that is not far off from rape?

You're the one that responded to me first, so I asked for clarification.

I'll answer that if you answer whether torture and/or rape fit under the "anything that happens to you" that people deserve for not obeying the police.

i mean, in the opening post we have someone describing getting pepper sprayed as "the spiciest rack of hot wings getting all kinds of thrown in your face while satan stabs you in the eyes with a flaming pitchfork." are we really going to have a serious debate on whether or not it actually qualifies as torture?

No, and I'll freely admit that "anything that happens to you" is too broad. I mean in the course of what would be expected of what SHOULD be normal police procedure. If you fight a cop after committing a crime, then yes, you deserve to be pepper sprayed or tazed. If you try to kill a cop, yes, you deserve to be shot. And so on.

Rape is not something that a normal person would consider as something that would be common to happen while being apprehended by police. Can it happen? Absolutely. But your teacher can rape you, as well. So can a family member, and so on. So just because people who have happened to be police have raped people before, that does not make it fair to lump that in with police procedure.

Likewise, I do not consider pepper spray to be torture if it is being used to stop you from doing something illegal after you have refused to stop. Could it be torture? Sure, if you're doing nothing wrong and they're just blasting you for no reason. But if it's used as a deterrent because you are refusing to stop, then no, it's not torture.

The pain could be considered "torture," but the act of pepper spraying somebody is not automatically an act of torturing somebody.

I mean, people often say things like "Man, that test was torture," or "Work was torture today," but that does not literally mean they were being tortured.

The act of torturing somebody has taken on a different meaning than the basic definition.

Anyway to answer, they're comparable as forms of assault/violent control in some cases but there's a difference of degree, and in a generic comparison I'd obviously consider rape far more heinous.

It shouldn't need to be clarified unless you're automatically assuming the worst.

"Rape" is not a normal thing that happens when police are arresting somebody.

Not at all.

If I punch you to stop you from kicking a child, I'm not torturing you no matter how much pain it caused you.

If they spray you to stop you from destroying something or attacking somebody, they aren't torturing you.

If you've already stopped and they keep doing it, or you weren't doing anything to begin with? Then yes, it's torture.
