My mom is so proud of "being British" and then her number one result wasn't even from the isles (though two and three were). I guess her family didn't move around much where a mass migration of Angles landed and there are some anglicized surnames from the 1700s (and earlier) in her family tree that were originally German.

My dad and I found this exceptionally amusing, as he's about 95% German (genetically, he wasn't born there) and if either of us pissed off my mom enough, she'd go with a "blinking Germans!" and so on, complaining about stereotypes that she felt applied to the situation in a moment of frustration... Of course, we would not let her results go quietly because of that. Even my wife joined in. It was pretty funny how defensive she'd get about it too... Over time it became less amusing though so we stopped.

Tangent: I wonder if anyone has ever paid somebody else for their spit to get a "sure thing" desired result. It seems utterly stupid, but so are the people doing these tests for bigoted reasons.

Surprises make it fun. My dad and I are dull as dishwater (and that expression itself), apparently. My wife's is all over the place though. Pretty much every part of Europe and then a trace "<1%" from Melanesia, of all places... We assume a sailor brought back a colony bride, or something...

No but I'm not really that interested in ancestry per say. I am however curious about finding my family from my mums side. Even more the half siblings I've got out there that I'll probably never meet. Maybe one day I'll go down this route or something.

It said I had 17% European ancestry which didn't surprise me. I had estimated 15%. I know I have white ancestors on both sides of my family tree at different points of time.

I gave me my mom one for christmas a couple of years ago. It pretty much matched up exactly with her geneology stuff which was something like 75% welsh and 25% nordic of some sort that I don't recall.

My dad still hasn't done one, but his is pretty much all german as far as I know.

I'm whatever mix of that.

Saaame. I want to try Family Tree DNA and then 23&me. There is also a test specific to black Americans to discover their African heritage, but that one is the most expensive of all.

That sounds cool though. There aren't a lot of black people where I live, but all the ones I seem to meet are either from Nigeria or were originally babies adopted from Haiti, with virtually no exceptions.

I'd probably do one more if it was particularly accurate and compare results with what I already have. The big advantage I've had is both my parents' families were able to search back through various records to the 16th century in some cases. They didn't move around very much either, which probably helped with that a lot. The majority of my family today, in terms of numbers, are in the UK, then Canada, then Paraguay (wtf?!). Everyone else, wherever they are, are probably 8th cousins and stuff and not close enough to be worth investigating.

What are the costs like anyway?

Ancestry is usually $99 but I got it on sale for $79. The other main ones (Family Tree DNA and 23&me) offer "basic" (autosomal) testing at $99.

Family Tree has tests for Y-DNA and mitochondrial DNA.

Eh maybe. But if you can get people to willingly hand over their genetic info and pay you the pleasure to do so. Well...

Anyway, I got one of these but I haven't done it yet. I already have a really good idea of my family history on both sides going back to 1620s. One being on one of the first ships to Plymouth Colony, and the other being in the Colony of Virginia.

This reminds me of a pulse-tracker wristband I got for Christmas one year. Can you believe it needed an internet account to display offline data? I wasn't sure whether to laugh or be insulted by how they tried to downplay the issue in their abridged terms of service.

In much the same way, Ancestry keeps these records. They can say they have no intention of disclosing them but they have no choice in the matter when given the appropriate warrant.

You don't need to be a criminal to be at risk. Yours and even the test results from family members can used to build a case against you in court. I wouldn't worry too much if you're already in their system but the prospect of bad luck is something you have to live with.

^Yeah, I didn't have to pay for mine. My mom's just obsessed with this stuff and got my dad to buy me one. If it was coming out of my pocket, I probably wouldn't have bothered. I'm about 3/4 German (73% Western Europe, but we can figure out where that all came from going back hundreds of years, and it's all Prussian from the looks of it based on geography and surnames). I got that from both my parents, obviously. The next ones were solely from my mom's side... Ireland/Scotland/Wales was second with 14%. Great Britain was next with 6%.

The other three were trace regions. 3% respectively for Scandinavia and Finland/NW Russia with 1% Eastern Europe rounding things out. We assume the Scandinavian is Danish and the Eastern European is Polish (there's a Germanicized version of a Polish surname on my dad's side), but don't know with 100% certainty. As for Finland/NW Russia, it was a total surprise and we can't explain it. There's no evidence supporting that anyone in my family ever lived there, so it must've been somebody from that region migrating to Prussia...

That's what I did. Is she doing the health and ancestry or just ancestry? They have 2 options now.

Ancestry.com has a larger pool of users she could match with.

Also: if it's your wife trying to find out information about her father, she should ask her mother to do the testing with the same service.

https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/202908000-Do-men-and-women-receive-different-ancestry-information-from-23andMe-

That way you can see exactly what is linked to her mother and what isn't.

I did my DNA testing in the hopes I'd find out more on the paternal side, and was out of luck there. Still waiting on my mom to do her 23andme kit...
