Do they care?

I keep seeing this thing on soda/soda commercials saying 'balance what you eat, drink, and do' and stuff like 'we list calories and sugar because we care'. I haven't had a soda in 4 years because They are Horrendous for your health and don't belong anywhere in a healthy diet.

Meh in moderation they aren't really that bad, its kind of like ice cream if you eat a bowl or two of it a day its pretty bad for you but if you have ice cream once a month its not a big deal. Anyways the reason why they are making ads like that is to try to court the younger demographic that has pretty much abandoned soda. It's why Coca-Cola moved on to making bottled water and the Simply line of fruit juices.

its a company it has no feelings. some people within the company probably care, but ultimately they are in it for the money.

I mean its like I tell people when they bitch about fast food being unhealthy. yeah sure it is, but there is this magical thing called moderation. if you exercise it, you'll be fine. when I was a kid I only got mcdonalds as a reward for good grades in school, and only once a month. outside that I only got if if we went on a somewhat lengthy trip (1 and a half hours or more i'm guessing) and we decided to eat on the way out of convenience.

thing is some soda companies do own or at least bottle healthier brands. think coke has the bottling rights to at least one water brand. so they have covered their bases. they profit either way, just naturally they are going to promote more what they know will sell more.

nope. being healthy has been becoming a new fad. so there's money to be made off it.

if they truly cared, they'd put out healthy shit, and undercut the unhealthy stuff as much as possible on pricing. to try and persuade people due to it being cheaper

kinda my point. they are trying to profit, but if they truly truly cared about people being healthy they wouldn't be trying to get rich off it, just make a livable wage

Recently I have started to fill up a bottle with water before I go to work.
But yeah it is kinda dumb to pay for water but I'm at least drinking water instead of soda.

There is a guy I work with who buys lots of candy, sodas(especially energy drinks like Red Bull) and other unhealthy shit everyday.

And this guy is overweight as fuck as well. He is constantly panting when he does pretty much anything.
Like putting on his clothes and even when eating you can hear this guy breathing heavily.

Seriously, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he gets stroke one day.

Of course not. They're selling sour sugar water.
If they cared about the health of people they'd be making and selling other things.
Maybe some people in the companies care a little bit. But the higher ups care about sales and profit. Otherwise they wouldn't be higher ups.
Of course you already knew the answer.

ultimately though who gives a fuck if they care about your health, no one but maybe some children don't know the shit is unhealthy, so apparently those who drink it don't care, so why should they?

though on the other hand people acting like the stuff is going to send them to a really early grave got some issues. there is far unhealthier things people do on the regular.

I'm not sure any company overly cares, although *most* companies have some concern for customers since they're a source of revenue. The only indifferent groups might be cigarette-makers.

And, in general, there's nothing so terrible about soda that it can't be consumed in moderation.

Eeyup. These days, healthy eating is becoming more marketable, so soda companies are trying to play into that (without making any changes to their formulas that would actually cost money, preferably), but that's purely because it'll get people buying more stuff, not because they genuinely care.

Zeus posted...

Compared to glucose, fructose skips the first regulatory step in sugar metabolism. This allows it to give more of a surge of energy, since the body processes it faster, but fructose isn't typically present in high enough quantities for this to cause any particular issue. When it becomes a significant source of carbohydrate calories (as happens when one has a significant amount of HFCS in their diet), though, it definitely messes with the insulin/glucagon regulatory system, and can lead to diabetes.

Average consumption may be alright, but bear in mind that "average consumption" is counting the very large number of people that say "I never drink soda because it's awful for you" and "I only drink soda very rarely because it's awful for you," as well as that soft drinks have considerable addictive properties. "Average consumption" isn't really that relevant when you take those points into account. Soda is very, very unhealthy, and HFCS is a major part of that unhealthiness, even if enough people are sufficiently aware of that fact to keep "average consumption" below dangerous levels.

I don't get the HFCS fear mongering. If you drink bucketloads of soda, it doesn't matter whether it has HFCS or regular sugar. Demonizing HFCS specifically is missing the forest for the trees, and weirdly makes it sound like soda with regular sugar is health food o_O

High fructose corn syrup is bad, but it's just as bad as ordinary sugar, not an extra evil version.

Again, a higher fructose content means more of the sugar is bypassing the first regulatory step in carbohydrate metabolism, which means it contributes more to the development of diabetes, as well as being more immediately converted into fat. Other forms of sugar are also bad in similar ways, but HFCS is particularly bad because of its high fructose content.

GMOs aren't bad.

Also, you're confusing correlation and causation. HFCS is almost entirely used in junk food, but that food would be junk with or without the HFCS. I suppose HFCS making junk food cheaper is an issue of its own, but the junk food would still be junk food regardless of whether HFCS or sugar were used.

Also, GMOs aren't bad.
