tbh, I don't think it's internally consistent to have pride in the U.S., a nation of immigrants, and not want to welcome with open arms people who want to be a part of it.

While the alt-right nationalists are xenophobic and anti-immigrant, I don't think it's correct to consider that a logical consequence, especially for the U.S.

It was me

I'm about halfway through it. The chapter on sexism is definitely worth reading; Hillary obviously has a unique perspective being the woman who has come the closest to the most powerful job in the world, but much of what she writes about is pretty universal.

Right now I'm reading the chapters about being pragmatic vs visionary which I also think is super interesting. This is the only part so far where she talks that much about Bernie (and you've probably seen most of those quotes since they were the ones that made the headlines). Obviously I agree more with her on prioritizing pragmatism, but she's actually surprisingly conciliatory to the idea that she went too far to that side.

Yeah. I mean, it's definitely true that she talks about a lot of other reasons for her loss that were not her fault, but they're all pretty valid (538 had a good politics chat where they went through every one of them, and I think all but maybe one they concluded was more significant than the standard criticism of "not campaigning in Wisconsin). But she also does talk a lot about the mistakes she made. I think she still believes that most of those decisions (besides fuckups like the emails) were the right thing to do in her ideal world (where people are making their decisions on the merits of the argument instead of voting for Donald fucking Trump), but she acknowledges that they might not have been the right moves to get elected.

That's very mature of her.

Just a pity that Hillary opening her mouth for even a split second is enough for conservatives and scapegoating liberals to paint her as a hysterical idiot

As a specific example (and I'm not sure I agree this would have worked), she apparently had done some serious research into a potential universal basic income funded by use of public goods (modeled off a program they apparently have in Alaska where each citizen is given a check every year for their share of the state's oil money). I forget the specific funding sources she was gonna use (one thought was a carbon tax I think), but she and her team decided that the numbers didn't really work and she scrapped it. In the book she wonders if proposing big ideas like that and working out the details later might have been a better strategy.

My personal opinion is that being visionary is probably more effective for getting elected, but worse for actually governing (see, for example, all of the failed repeal and replace efforts where the Republicans ran on the slogan for seven years without any serious plan). One thing that Hillary points out in the book that I agree with is that if politicians continually promise big things and then fail to deliver it will make people more cynical about the entire system. Of course, you can be successful in doing big things (FDR, LBJ), but it's a risk.

Thanks for sharing, appreciate the insight.

You remind me of a Young Turks quote I heard about Obama: he ran like Bernie and governed like Hillary. I don't know that can always work, but it makes some sense in the way that he prevented the party from fracturing in the same way we see today.

Yeah, I think that's accurate. I get the impression though that Obama really did intend to be more visionary (I need a better word here since it's not really the opposite of being pragmatic), but then adjusted when confronted with the practical and political realities of the job. If you did really believe in pragmatism from the get go but pretended not to for the campaign I don't know if it would work that well.

Oh yeah, another terrible thing that happened this week that I don't think we've talked about is that Trump's HHS made it so that employers could again refuse to provide birth control coverage in their health insurance is they have a religious or moral exemption. They also made this take effect immediately (which, as I understand it, is likely unlawful; normally they would need a comment period and stuff, but there's an exception if there's a good reason that immediate action is required. Obviously that's not the case here.)

It all boils down to conservatives wanting corporations to have more rights than citizens. As a corporation, you can force your religious beliefs on your employees (Birth Control Coverage). You can force them to be patriotic (NFL controversy). And you can pay them as little as you like (wanting to do away with the minimum wage) But as a citizen.. well you don't have any rights except to own a gun. Nobody's infringing on that in the tiniest little bit or everything goes to hell in a handbasket.

2. He took credit for inventing the word fake

Trump, as so often, called the media fake. And then he, it seemed, took credit for coining the word fake.

I think one of the greatest of all terms Ive come up with is fake. I guess other people have used it, perhaps, over the years, but Ive never noticed it, he said.

Trump would not have even been correct if he meant to refer specifically to the phrase fake news.
