Maechen is probably one of the better minor NPCs from FFX to nominate because he does have a certain charm that appeals to more than one person, unlike Isaaru or Dona.

Quina is the best blue mage character. Strago's whatever. Gau isn't straight up blue mage but I probably appreciate Quina more overall anyway. Quistis is whatever. Kimahri is whatever. DeRosso is alright. Cat lady in Bravely Second is whatever.

FFT has a smaller playrate than pretty much all of the main games and the fans seem pretty fickle as to who to support, unlike VIII which will probably stick with Squall or XIII which is always behind Lightning

Honestly this contest had made me really want to skip XII and XIII and play Tactics, with everyone's singing it's praises. Mixed with my attempts at the other two and finding them mediocre at best.

FFVIII sticks with Squall because I support him, pretty much. He hasn't always done the best. Laguna was the top ranked FFVIII character until the last couple years. I've let him die early the last couple years, too, so I'm trying to make him a higher priority because he has the best chance of any other FFVIII character to get casual support and catch fire late in the contest with the right draw.

Now that I have a clearer picture of how this contest works and the people who support it I have some ideas for next year and what I could have done differently earlier this time around (Well, I was late both FFT hardboots what can I do X_X)

I would love to see Mustadio/Gaff/Kiros all get in but I know I can realistically only push 1.

i thought Laguna only ever came close to winning because of a cheater, though.

i mean i guess he still might have been the top ranked VIII character without the cheater when Liberal Degenerate was still around and you and pj and some others hadn't shown up. but right now it's hard to see Laguna doing any better than Squall.

I'm not just trying to be over-the-top in hating FFX. I just finished beating FF13 and my immediate thought was "this is FFX if I LIKED FFX." That's not to say that FF13 is amazing or that FFX is worse in EVERY aspect, but neither of those statements are true. I will fully admit that FF13 sucks at mini-games. It's just the missions and there's no blitzball or the various card games from previous FFs. I'll also admit that FF13 does poorly with its secondary characters, whereas FFX is great with people like Seymour and Jecht, or even minor characters like O'Aka.

But anyway, my comparison started with my feelings on Hope and Tidus. Both are objectively whiny and obnoxious, yet Hope works as character for me and Tidus does not. So I started trying to think of why, because I SHOULD hate Hope given all my prior opinions on whiny characters and kid characters. And it comes down to Hope being the least important character of the PCs. Like, he's twice-removed from the main characters of the game. As such, his whininess actually feels real and doesn't feel overplayed or overpushed. He's a fourteen-year-old kid who is going through the worst week of his life, up to and including the death of his moth. So being whiny and upset makes sense, and this all culminates in him trying to kill Snow (who he blames for his mother's death), only to fail and get over his desire for revenge. Yeah, he's ignored for most of the game after that, but that makes sense too, given the disconnect he has from the rest of the plot.

Compared that to Tidus, who I HATE. Tidus is basically what would happen if you took Hope's whining and mashed that up with Snow's cocky, douchey overconfidence. It creates the fucking Ulti of Final Fantasy (hence my Beta comment). Hope works on his own because his whining makes sense with his story. Snow's overconfidence works in the context of his story. Tidus merging those two diametrically opposed personalities is fucking OBNOXIOUS. So yeah, Tidus is one of the biggest flaws for me in FFX, and FFXIII fixes that by not only splitting the Tidus character into two separate characters whose personalities work in the context of the game, but also giving us a main character (Lightning) who feels more properly suited to the role.

From there, we kinda get to comparisons between the rest of the cast. I HATE Wakka. HATE Wakka. I find him obnoxious and racist semi-comic relief. You know who does the whole semi-comic relief character better? Sazh. I HATE Yuna. Despite the game being her fucking journey and her fucking story, she feels SO fucking meek and pathetic (though again, part of this is the fact that an obnoxious personality like Tidus' overpowers her.) You know who does the whole Yuna journey storyline BETTER than Yuna did? FANG. Lightning does the crotchety, hard-ass role better than Lulu (and actually makes sense in the context of her universe...seriously, why the fuck is Lulu a goth when she lives on a tropical fucking island?) Vanille is better than Rikku, but I can at least accept a difference of opinion there. And there's no real comparison to Auron or Kimahri, but they don't really bother me regardless.

The overarching story is very similar, right up to the ending, but I think FF13 nails that first half much better than FF10 does because it's much more character-based, and again, I don't care much for the characters in FF10. The linearity is similar, but I like the concept behind Gran Pulse at least opening things up a little more than FFX really did. The crystarrium is just an improved sphere grid. The battle system...okay, I'll give the nod to FFX there, because I hate not control my secondary party members. But the overworld system getting rid of random battles is definitely great (huge part of why I like FF12.)

tl;dr the FLAWS in FFX I think are fixed in FF13. The things FFX does right, it still does right. But FF13 definitely fixes things and is the more enjoyable game to me.

Also, to be fair because I ran out of space, I should also point out that the weapon leveling in FF13 is kinda dumb and pointless, so FFX has the edge there.

I know this is difficult for you, but Tidus's personality is a creation of his childhood at the hands of Jecht. His cockiness is reflection of his father's; this is what he saw as a kid, and what he came to believe would bring him all the things his father had. His frustration at his situation is a reflection of what he failed to receive as a child. He has every right to be upset with Jecht as well as his mother. His cocky facade covers his true self, and it was a learned behavior from Jecht.

He's a very human character, sorry if you prefer tropes that XIII offers. If you're after that sort of character then yes indeed those are better at that than Tidus.

Tidus isn't even all that whiny-- there are some brief fleeting moments, but it's nothing remotely close to a defining aspect like it is early game Hope. Like comparing Tidus to Hope is beyond hilarious to me. Shows the extent to which Inviso has caricatured Tidus in his head.

Maybe, but it's not just niche characters. Know what happened when I took a hiatus once? Yep, Seymour got booted. Dr. Cid should be in, but there apparently is no interest. I mean a lot of major characters do badly here. Playables and main villains alike. I'd rather have niche stuff like Isaaru or Dad or Tristam or whatever. Doesn't matter if I like it or not. Better than good stuff that might not be niche, but has no support so it flops instantly.

I mean, if you're talking relevance to their respective games, then there's a pretty big difference. If you're talking support (and you seem to be), then there isn't really one depending on the year. Kimahri's been booted a bunch of times for a reason. Gabranth is knocking at Shuyin's door for a reason. I would actively oppose anyone trying to nominate Gabranth back into the contest for any reason other than to have him take over last place.

The difference is basically ability to draw more votes as the field thins. IIRC Tristam, when he was able to make it past the early rounds, got some random non-traded support. Dr Cid definitely does.

I think Isaaru is really only gaining votes when trading gets more aggressive, or someone's getting cute and troll saving him.

As Leon said they can functionally be the same depending on the year, but how they evolve as the contest goes is way different. Basically that difference is subtle if you're not paying a lot of attention-- but it's all about how many will have a guy as a priority one vs how many generally like a guy. Like I do legitimately think X-Death is a lot stronger than he lets on-- he made a run late one year and it wasn't due to a ton of trading, but I'm unreliable and his primary support early, so he ends up getting fluke booted a lot. This is made worse because I don't trade very much ever.

If anyone has a plan regarding the contest, it's X-Death. Anyone who paid attention to FFV's plot would know he is a patient man, particularly when it comes to pretending to be defeated for extended periods of time.

Dad and Tristam are main characters.

Gabranth is a major antagonist.

Kimahri is at least a party member.

Theres a reason 6 and X get the most hate - their contingents are full of suck characters.

But with the 6ers its like "well at least theyre not Umaro or Gogo"
