Besides your first time playing a game that is.

For me, it would have to be either the first time I played the Sega Nomad or playing Metal Gear Solid for the first time.

I was amazed by the fact that I could bring Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with me anywhere I went to play and I have so many positive memories with that thing. I feel like a kid every time I play Mania on my Switch now.

Metal Gear Solid was just such a huge jump in presentation quality that I couldn't believe it. The music, codec conversations, voice work... all of it was just amazing. I remember thinking that was going to be the peak of graphics and sound.

The Gameboy Advance SP. Having a built in backlight was revolutionary.

As far as graphics go, the first battle of God of War did it. I remember immediately running over to my friend's house to show him because I was so shocked that games were even capable of that

it all comes down to basically the first time i saw games on a new generation of consoles

the first was when i saw super mario bros. 2 for the first time at a friend's house. most advanced game i had played prior to that was probably rogue on an old, beat up PC

then the 3d games on the n64 and ps1

then the games with smooth spheres & curves on the dreamcast, xbox and ps2

then the incredible fidelity on the ps3 and beyond. but nothing's really blown my mind graphically since that

cutscenes in ff8 and starcraft felt amazing at the time. distinctly remember my friend & i discussing whether video games would ever have real-time graphics as good as those, ha

first non-graphical 'mind blow' was definitely playing ff7, leaving midgar and realizing i wasn't even close to done with the first disc

the plot twists in knights of the old republic really got me, and the depth of emotion in metal gear solid did as well

finding out that pokemon silver was twice as big as i expected it to be was awesome

Others are probably the intro scene of Warcraft 2 (didnt have a sound card that worked with Warcraft 1), and the World of Ruin start in FF6

Non-graphical technical stuff was Duck Hunt because of the gun controller, but I was like 4 at the time and even though it wasn't my first by any means, it's close enough to that.

Story-type stuff was the first trip to the Dark World in LttP because I was like six and didn't pay much attention to the intro.

Graphical was OoT. Would've been Mario 64 if I'd reached for that cartridge first though, since I got them both together.

I remember being blown away by finally being able to play as the full roster of Tekken 3 after playing the demo for a long time (I was so excited to finally be Yoshimitsu), and then finding out you can unlock MORE characters.

I was blown away by games I wouldn't even play until later on, like watching my dad play FFX or my mom play the Resident Evil games. I was really impressed by the characters and graphics of those games.

Devil May Cry was the first scary game I played all the way through (I tried Silent Hill 1 & 2 a few times but never really got too far) and I remember being really impressed with the game's ability to frighten while still making you feel powerful. It's not something you may think of when horror comes to mind but it's certainly there.

I don't think I was impressed with anything story related until I played Metal Gear Solid, years after its release.

Super Mario 64 absolutely shredded my mind with its true 3D movements and amazing sounds and music. I had only known mario going left and right, literally a new dimension to everything established

I tried finding every excuse I could to go to walmart and play it

SFII blew me away because I grew up an arcade kid and MAN those sprites were so huge and detailed. Every character was different, every stage and theme was different. And the fact that it promoted a competitive mindset among your fellow players. And that you had to put your own actual money on the line to test your skills made it all the more exhilarating. I might be a low key gambler

OoT blew my mind because it was the most open ended game I had played at the time, it truly felt like anything could happen in that game and I had to find all of it

FFVII's cinematics and story has always made an impression on me

The only other time that comes to mind is when I played MGS2
I stayed up all night in bed after I beat it because it freaked me out, I guess I couldn't really fathom that ending

Graphically, it'd have to be seeing Melee's intro for the first time. Just seeing the leap from Smash Bros 64, the lighting, how it paid homage to so many series, how WOAH THAT'S A TON OF POKEMON AND YOSHIS ON SCREEN. I was solidly convinced graphics would never get better than the scene of Sheik playing his harp and looking up to find Kirby flying around.

The first time that really stands out to me was with FFIV. I was certain that the Tower of Zot was the final dungeon, so when I beat it and it became clear that I might only be halfway through the game at the most, I was in absolute shock.

That or SMB3. "Mario can fly?!?" I think it was the first time I ever spoke words that were boldfaced and italicizes.

I don't know about the first time, but the first time that was major enough to stick out in my memory was when I got to the end of Summer in The Last of Us and I thought to myself, "Fuck man. No other game has hit me like this. Damn."

The first time I was blown away by gameplay was in Red Faction Guerilla. Being able to blow up practically everything was pretty incredible.

Super Mario 64 is up there for my first experience with 3D movement. Only a month later was my first time playing Descent and getting a taste of first-person shooter gameplay. For a long time afterward it made other first-person shooters feel like a step backward because it gave such complete freedom of movement.

Descent was probably the bigger "mind blow" because it was the first time a game ever gave me apprehension about an upcoming encounter.

I've been playing games since the NES and I can't remember anything from my childhood that literally blew my mind. When I was an adult, uh, Demon's Souls kinda blew me away but it wasn't when I initially played it. I had to play the game for a while before I truly started to appreciate it for what it was.
