It doesn't matter what each side stands for, he condemned the violence that was occurring from both sides.

Lmao but trump cried when Obama wouldn't condemn Muslims as a whole for the acts of Islamic terrorists. Smh.

Did you just compare cutting people's heads off, throwing gay people off of roofs, bombing innocent civilians, and enslaving women to standing around?

Wow Jen

here's a great list of examples of the kinds of things these groups (read: white supremacist / nazi / alt-right) have done just this year alone. Before you dismiss the link, it's a compilation of news articles and descriptions of acts of violence. Not commentary, just a great deal of sources.

So what is the appropriate punishment for neo-Nazis terrorizing people?

Terrorizing people? Walking around in broad daylight with signs after getting a permit to do so is terrorizing people? Really lowered the bar on that one.

By contrast, back when you had supremacists ACTUALLY terrorizing people, they were committing actual crimes. They weren't getting a permit to walk around in public areas, they were trespassing in the dead of night and burning crosses in peoples' yards. Nowadays "terrorizing" is apparently saying things you dislike (well, most people dislike) in a public forum.

But were they actual nazis from the German army during wwll

Idk why you and Zeus keep saying this like these are the only people who can ever have been Nazis. BTW the German army is totally different than the Nazi party.

The Nazis were more than just the German army. It was the whole system. And the ones today aren't actual Nazis. Most weren't even descended from actual Nazis.

Yes, free speech just protects you from the government, which will just find some tangent to attack you for it. The public does not honor that ideal as well.

Technically it goes further than that. First off, filing for a permit is supposed to guarantee your physical protection via police presence. Second, there are *limited* workplace protections for speech but that's more strictly union-related stuff.

May 27, 2017: A 34-year-old Anthony Hammond lets loose with a flurry of racial slurs directed at a black man in a parking lot, then pulls out a machete and stabs the man before barricading himself in his apartment for several hours, until finally surrendering to police.

June 18, 2017: two men armed with baseball bats attack a group of Muslim teenagers, kidnapping a 17-year-old girl, who they beat to death, dumping her body in a pond.

May 20, 2017: University of Maryland student and member of the “alt-Reich” facebook group Sean Urbanski walks up to 22-year-old Richard Collins III, who is black and who Urbanski does not know, and stabs him to death in an unprovoked attack.

April 30, 2017: A white man storms a pool party in San Diego and shoots four black women, two black men, and one Latino man while allowing white attendees to leave. One victim dies while the other six sustain critical injuries.

For those who are still confused about why people are focusing their attacks on the white supremacists (permit and all) versus those who came out to oppose them, I'm going to try to explain the issue using only tweets sent out by political figures. And to avoid the perception that this is the left dog-piling on Trump and his supporters for political gain, I will use only statements from Republicans to do so.

"No, not the same. One side is racist, bigoted, Nazi. The other opposes racism and bigotry. Morally different universes." -Mitt Romney

"Let's get real. There is no moral equivalency to Nazi sympathizers. There can be no room in America — or the Republican party — for racism, anti-Semitism, hate or white nationalism. Period." John Kasich, Governor

"When it comes to white supremacists & neo-nazis, there can be no equivocating: they’re propagators of hate and bigotry. Period." -Thom Tillis, Senator

"We must be clear. White supremacy is repulsive. This bigotry is counter to all this country stands for. There can be no moral ambiguity." -Paul Ryan, House Speaker

"Mr. President, there were not "very fine people" on the NeoNazi, white supremacist side; only haters. Grateful DOJ understands this." -Barbara Comstock, Congresswoman

"This is simple: we must condemn and marginalize white supremacist groups, not encourage and embolden them." -Todd Young, Senator

"Saturday's violence and tragic loss of life was a direct consequence of the hateful rhetoric & action from white supremacists demonstrating." -Kevin McCarthy, House Majority Leader

"I was clear about this bigotry & violence over the weekend and I'll repeat it today: We must defeat white supremacy and all forms of hatred." -Steve Scalise, House Majority Whip

"The organizers of events which inspired & led to [the attack] are 100% to blame for a number of reasons. Mr. President, you can't allow White Supremacists to share only part of blame. They support idea which cost nation & world so much pain" -Marco Rubio, Senator

"Blaming "both sides" for Charlottesville?! No. Back to relativism when dealing with KKK, Nazi sympathizers, white supremacists? Just no." -Illeana Ros-Lehtinen, Congresswoman

"KKK, neo-Nazi, & white supremacist groups spew bigotry & racism. These groups & their ideals are the antithesis of American patriotism." -David Perdue, Senator

"Apologize. Racism, bigotry, anti-Semitism, of any form is unacceptable. And the leader of the free world should be unambiguous about that." -Will Hurd, Congressman

And finally, perhaps my favourite of the bunch:

"I don't understand what's so hard about this. White supremacists and Neo-Nazis are evil and shouldn't be defended." -Steve Stivers, Senator

Just goes to show how much of a disconnect Trump has had with his priveleged life.

I mean, I'm 38, my grandfather and some great uncles fought in WW II. Trump is what, 70-something? Did he know no one who served during the war? How he can label anyone who would march around waving swastikas or alongside those who would brandish swastikas and Klan robes as "very fine" people is astonishing.

I'm not surprised at all. Donald Trump has a pathological fear of admitting that he's wrong, to the point where he even said during the election when asked about his credentials that he has never participated in confession (since confessing your sins is, by definition, an admission that you did something wrong). On the rare occasions he *has* taken something back, he's done so by denying he ever said it or blaming someone else (see: his stance on the Iraq war, his participation in the Birther conspiracy theory). I cannot think of a single time where Donald Trump has said "I was wrong".

The thing is that the opposite site are communists who are literally saying "kill whitey". Antifa isn't just different kinds of anti fascists. They are communists and communists have done a lot more killing than any other ideology. If you don't blame the communists you are talking all the murders of Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Pot right.

*sigh*

No, the other side weren't communists. The other side were anti-Nazis, which really should be a synonym for "literally everyone who isn't a racist piece of shit", but for some reason it apparently isn't.

Again, I want to make it 100% clear who you're racing to the defence of and who you're condemning. The guys you're defending were waving Swastikas around, screaming "Jews will not divide us!", doing their best impression of a Nazi book-burning parade with tiki kitsch, and Sieg Heiling their way across the park. Several had signs or shirts revering Hitler. These people are celebrating the ideals of a man whose signature achievement was putting 12 million people into furnaces.

The "other side" was people who thought that first group were assholes. I've showed up to counter-protests against Nazis and I have absolutely zero sympathy for communists. I would have been at Charlottesville if it were anywhere near me.

And this should be abundantly apparent by the sheer breadth of people who are reacting to this. Even some of Congress's most conservative members understand that white supremacists are evil. And it's not hard to figure out why - far right they may be, but hatred isn't a leftist or rightist attribute, it's just a shitty attribute. No one of any political stripe should feel in any way hesitant about condemning hatred and, judging by the sheer number of Republicans - from moderates to ultra-conservatives - who have sounded off about this, few of them do.

And, it bears repeating that only one of those groups killed someone and it wasn't the counter-protesters.

So, again, when a dispute breaks out between guys who want to lynch blacks, burn Jews, and exile everyone who isn't as white as the driven snow and guys who think that's a pretty shitty ideology, those two sides are not morally equivalent.

1) Do you know that? Can you say for sure I didn't say anything?

2) This topic isn't about BLM. Bringing them into the topic as you're doing is an off-topic distraction, pure and simple.

3) Perhaps I simply missed it, but I don't recall ever seeing anyone in authority in BLM wishing death or harm upon police or white people. Maybe you could back up your claim with a source?

Don't lie, the communists were wearing soviet flags.

Apparently they were... at a completely separate and unrelated protest taking place on a different day nearly 3000 miles away on the other side of the country.

C'mon, dude, it says the city name in the URL you posted and the exact intersection they were at is even visible in the shot. If you're going to rely on unrelated pictures to try and bolster your point, at least try a bit harder than that.

Google-fu failed me on figuring out exactly where and when this picture was taken, but I found it on a couple of right-wing blog posts dated back to at least 2014, so I feel pretty confident in saying it's not from Charlottesville either, in spite of the fact there's a lot of morons using it in a dual-pic with a swastika flag from the Charlottesville protests.
