Christ, that's a bummer.

Maybe Sanders couldn't have won an election against Trump, but he was a ray of light in the shit show that was the 2016 elections. Victory or not, he sounded like an honest dude and it looked like he was doing alright. Then CNN and the DNC fucked him over with a 15 inch double-ended dildo, Clinton got pushed with a bunch of glass-ceiling BS and now you have piss-bed Trump because no-one wanted to support a flip-flopping, crowd-pandering asshole. Well, that's exactly, what they got in Trump, but you know what I mean. No-one wanted Hillary.

I think the disillusionment of 2016 was that there was no "Change" candidate. Obama had a kick-ass gimmick and got in on a platform of "we want change", and neither candidate had a gimmick that was nearly as strong. I guess Trump did with his crowd of piss-baby memelords, but still. I feel like Bernie Sanders could have been a similar candidate, he was left-leaning as fuck and he was all about legalizing weed, keeping Planned Parenthood open etc. It would have been pandemonium to see him go against Trump with his stupid bullshit, it would have been seeing the left-most and right-most candidate duke it out.

But the DNC wanted an old, worn, wobbling tire instead of a candidate that appealed to left-leaning political youngsters.

I think they're mad because (supposedly) Bernie supporters didn't really come out to support/vote for Hillary after Bernie was out.

A lot of Hillary supporters seem to partially blame Bernie for Hillary losing. They seem to think that Bernie supporters either plain didn't vote or actually voted for Trump.

@clearaflagrantj I think this is a pretty egregious lie, and a convenient narrative which Bernie Sanders himself didn't do enough to dispel. I think that lie, and the anger it caused, are a significant part of the reason why our party lost the election. I think it's unfortunate that we're still arguing over this over a year later. I think it's unfortunate more people who are Bernie supporters don't speak up against it.

@PraiseKek This is also upsetting to me. First of all, because The Observer is Jared Kushner's old media outlet, and he's probably still pulling the strings of it -- in this case, in order to stir up bad blood between Bernie and Clinton factions, to Donald Trump's continued advantage.

Second of all, because it's so, so hypocritical. When Hillary ran for president, so many Bernie supporters were outraged that she seemed to think she was *entitled* to the privilege and shouldn't even have to run against anyone else for it. "It's her turn" became the meme of the day. Now, all these months later, apparently the shoe's on the other foot. *Bernie* is entitled to be nominated for his office, and no one should be able to run against him. Don't you see how wrong that is? I like Bernie, I don't want him to lose his seat, and I don't think he will, but it's wrongheaded to the point of absurdity to tell Vermonters "You don't have the right to try to run for office against your own senator"

@bkkorps No... It's not.

We're living in a post-truth world now. In a post-truth world, something doesn't have to be true for people to believe it... It just has to fit a narrative. It's easy for you to pretend the primary was rigged and Bernie was cheated out of a win by the DNC, because that's the narrative. It's just not the truth.

@Blackstar110 I don't disagree that DNC officials were biased against Sanders.

Clinton was a Democrat for decades, and Sanders was a Democrat for about five minutes. On some level, I can understand their frustration.

But that's still unacceptable coming from an organization that's supposed to be unbiased. In private correspondence, members of the DNC clearly expressed a preference for Clinton, and they treated Sanders with disdain. That's not acceptable, and I think Sanders and his supporters had every right to be upset about it.

The problem is when you make the jump from "the DNC didn't like Sanders" to "the DNC rigged the primary for Clinton." That didn't happen.

In a WikiLeaks trove of thousands upon thousands of emails, the *most* damaging allegation was that one DNC staffer floated the idea of making an issue of Sanders' atheism to discredit him. The idea was rightly shot down by Debbie Wassermann-Schultz, and it didn't go anywhere.

In another email, a staffer suggested "building a narrative against Sanders, that he never ever had his act together, that his campaign was a mess." Again, it was shot down by Debbie Wassermann-Schultz, and it didn't go anywhere.

On the balance it appears there was no conspiracy. A *few* stupid people talked about underhanded things, but the execution was not there. The apple was not as rotten to the core as people like to say it was.

If you feel I'm amiss, please point it out.

The emails create a vague sense of impropriety. But it's way more Veep than House of Cards.

My sense has always been, and continues to be, that Sanders supporters latched on to that vague sense of impropriety, and in their yearning for Sanders (and in their detest of Clinton), imagined that the game was rigged. When in fact, it wasn't.

Sanders lost by millions upon millions of votes. He lost because the majority of the people didn't vote for him. Not because the primary was rigged.

Sanders lost for more reasons than the primaries being rigged, but the DNC also 100% insisted on only airing debates at times when no one could watch and limiting his message.

"Rigged" might not be the right word, but they stacked the deck frequently.

best if SDs hold off until primary finishes. or eliminate them altogether--they're an undemocratic relic that does not belong in a party primary in a proper representative democracy

Just a detail: they're not supposed to be unbiased. They SAID they weren't going to get involved (and, despite some people wanting to, didn't actually do it). But they are a political party. Having opinions on politics is basically their job.

And people forget, Sanders won the platform. The Party embraced a lot of his ideas. That is no small victory.

Unfortunately a lot of his supporters (even people I knew) fell hook line and sinker for the right-wing smears on Clinton. In the end, it seems like a lot of them hated the Democratic candidate more than the GOP did.

Which is very sad
