Smash Bros series creator Masahiro Sakurai has told Nintendo Power that Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS probably wont feature a host of new characters, because the team want to focus on quality, rather than quantity. Sakurai says that he would rather refine the existing roster, instead of adding additional characters.
It isnt a matter of if the next game has 50 characters, thatll be enough. There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive.
In terms of quantity, weve probably already reached the limit of whats feasible. I think a change of direction may be whats needed..
I remember being pretty disappointed in the size of Brawl's roster. I mean, very few people were expecting less than 40 characters, prior to release... so the actual roster was quite a letdown.
Needless to say, I'm not happy about this news. >_> I'm still excited for the 3DS one, though, because I'm stoked for a portable Smash.

Good news, I'd say. I haven't kept up with WiiU news whatsover, but this is about all I'll keep track of. Have they moved into utilizing DLC? This would be a perfect implementation, imo. Work on your existing cast, then release new ones once you've found a good balance.

3DS has DLC now so Wii U will most certainly have it as well
Am I the only one who was ok with the size of the cast from the original? Playing the sequels, I just felt overwhelmed at the character select screen. Plus, I felt like they were just trying too damn hard to include characters for the sake of including characters. Like...Mr. Game and Watch? Seriously?
I wouldn't mind a same size or only slightly increased roster as long as it's not literally the same characters that were in Brawl. Some of them need to go for new guys, and all the clones need to either be dropped or drastically reworked.

What? G&W is awesome. Flip bacon all day every day. I bet you hate R.O.B. too.
Great news. Brawl had too many characters for my taste anyway. Melee hit it about right, though it certainly could have used some variety in place of clones. ...though I still wish Dr. Mario was kept around.
This is fine, a few characters in Brawl felt half assed (normal Samus, Ness/Lucas/Wario's grab release problems, Mario got nerfed hard from his E 4 All self, Sonic was rushed, Captain Falcon and Ganondorf were nerfed for no reason and Jigglypuff felt like she was slapped in the game at the last minute.)

That's completely fine with me so long as they update the game-hopping characters (the Zelda cast, mainly), which I'm sure they'll do. I'm hoping Toon Link manages to stay in as well, but if one of the Links has to go in order to make way for something new within this edict, that's fine too.

From: EndOfDiscOne | #009 Less interested now. The character reveals were what got me most excited about Brawl. I see your point, but this could make the few big character reveals we get all the more exciting because there won't be as many.
Though yeah I did love the character reveals so this is a shame.

I never played the original, and I wanted more than what Melee had to offer. I was completely happy with the size of Brawl's cast though, really.

Terrible news. Seriously, how can anyone justify this? Remember, this is Sakurai we're dealing with here, aka the master of mangled priorities. Hope you all enjoy your 40-hour Subspace Emissary 2 campaign!

brawl being too big is perfectly reasonable really. just make better characters, drop the bad ones and clones, improve the game. easy fixes. no problems there really.

Good. Because if there was one thing Brawl did right, its at least TRY and differentiate the clones playstyle. Fox/Falco/Wolf at least played differently, so did Marth/Ike.

Hope you all enjoy your 40-hour Subspace Emissary 2 campaign! My friends and I enjoy messing around with Subspace Emissary sometimes. I'm genuinely pleased that Brawl had some meatier single-player, redundant though much of it may have been.

I think this is a good idea personally. I liked Melee a hell of a lot more than Brawl, and Melee did have less characters >_>. Bringing the gameplay back to Melee standards with an even slightly larger cast is all I really ask for.
I'm pretty sure he'll add more characters, just not a lot more.
I mean I think it'd be kinda silly if he didn't at least add another Kid Icarus character.
Though this may greatly lower the odds of Roy, Mewtwo, Dr. Mario, and Pichu returning....unless they're somehow part of his "reworking characters" plan.

No need for words, Just cast Luminaire and be done with it.
Why would Ganondorf be removed? That would be like taking out Bowser. He's talking about fine-tuning the characters right there, and there's plenty to do with the Dorf that would differentiate him from the Falcon.

From: whatisurnameplz | #047 I really can't believe some of you people who don't like this. Please tell me how having more characters and less balance is a good thing. The funny thing is, if anyone here were to have said more characters at any cost, it probably would have been mean. I legitimately don't like fighting games outside of Smash, and I like Smash for all the 'wrong' reasons according to the hardcore fighting game community. I prefer Brawl over Melee because I enjoy its added content, including but not limited to its increased cast.
...
But seriously though, the number's pretty much high enough, and Brawl needs some serious tweaking from a gameplay perspective.
