For instance, I saw a video of one of their champion designers speaking at a conference, and he described the process for the Monkey king. In order to be true to lore, the original design had a permanent clone that was always with you, and the player needed to control both avatars. Then they realized that they were designing their most complex champion ever, which they did not feel was appropriate for the mascot champion of a new market. He had to pick Malphite and was ticked about solo queue because of it, and he laned with a Yi. They had to quit at 20:00 mins because the Xerath mid (me) and the Malphite (he kept freaking out because the Yi wouldn't get the kills) were both fed way too much. Yeah she can turn herself briefly ranged and use that to farm waves, but that can work against her. Ideally the top lane is the most self sufficient lane. You want your player top to (1) ward for themselves and (2) not fall terribly behind against whoever they are laning against. The jungler doesn't wan't to have to devote a bunch of time to make sure that the top lane will break even because that takes away a lot of the pressure you can bring to bear on dragons in the early game. And so you either farm as a melee champion, or you pop your E to farm which also gives Kayle splash. This means that you are pushing your lane whether you want to or not. Which means a champion that can straight up beat you (in capable hands) will begin to zone you or you will be far forward enough to be ganked yourself. Basically the nature of her farming works against the lane. I think GP for example would absolutely command that lane. And Udyr should as well as long as he is maxing shield first. I'm actually not sure about renekton, but the point is that for Kayle to really win top in a high level of play she needs (1) to be able to spam nukes as her primary means of harassing and (2) be able to position herself so she can get her farming done in melee range. Point (1) is so important. When I run Kayle support (which I actually really like, but it can be match up specifics. Kayle against high burst champs like talon and leblanc can be so huge) I run mana regen yellows AND mana regen blue. And even with all of that I can't simply spam all I want. So for top lane I'd probably and 1-2 mana regen quints as well. And then MAYBE you will be able to constantly apply pressure with Q. But even then a champion like Udyr in good hands will be able to use turtle stance to soak the damage and sustain himself. It is also important to realize that in some cases you can't just live by the motto that "I'll be okay (or I'll win my lane) once I get wriggles or hit level X". Maybe the idea in this case is that with wriggles you can proceed with impunity, but that is the logic a lot of Tryndamere players use. "I'll just get wriggles ASAP, attack things constantly and use my crits to trade and then get back to healing and then once I'm 6 I'm unkillable". But to get to level 6 you have to make sure you don't get destroyed at level 1-3. Your armor just means very little with the Passive, Q passive, and brutalizer, plus the heals from Wriggles and W. The sole reason I find myself hard to fight is the speed up on W. It really works wonders early game.
