I like how so many people get to call things joke characters now but when I used to do that I was basically lynched and constantly dogged for it. For like years too.

I mean you went from "Refs are trying to screw the Gators" to "Eh, let them play the game". Either you believe in penalties being called or you believe in street ball.

I like when teams are allowed to play the game; part of the game is following the rules of said game. The false start missed call is one thing, maybe that wouldn't have impacted it, but the offensive pass interference makes it so anyone with no talent at all can play the game. Anyone can score if the guy that's supposed to be there against you is being illegally held by another player 5 yards away from you.

I don't think other save mys, outside of SMDC, really capture any of the aura of SMFFFC though. It's just something about the Final Fantasy brand I think, and maybe just the long tradition and history of this particular contest. I can't imagine there being any sort of big drama involving characters that aren't just the ones allowed into this contest as it is now. Not that there's really a ton of drama anymore I suppose, but there's still really high levels of participation and effort put into winning this. I can't really see anyone pushing as hard to win a general RPG contest.

I mean as you can see, Square backed off from even naming the Warrior of Light in Dissidia, though he is now a character since he has a personality and isn't just a blank slate for you to put a name/personality into as you wish.

In the Final Fantasy manga, the red mage in it was called Puffy. Obviously that isn't really a canon source but maybe it is since Bravely Default is Final Fantasy. Certainly the manga adaption of the first game is more credible than a non-FF game is.

I mean the thing for me has always been that they're class names. Link is not just called "Hylian" or something else. Final Fantasy is a class oriented game and the first game's playables are just the class names that would later be used to describe various other characters with actual names and personalities.

It's just my personal feelings about it. I used to want them removed from this because they are just not characters in the same way as the rest of the field is; Final Fantasy is also not Legend of Zelda, the protagonists of all the games sans the first one have very distinct personalities that you can like or hate. The first game basically is more like a D&D style adventure game you can make up stories about the characters yourself, since they are only identified as classes. I'm content with them at this stage, maybe because I'm just older and care less but possibly because I at least view them as part of the Final Fantasy series and I have something else that's allowed to push harder at now.

Apparently I have been misspelling a character's name in my first post, and for that I apologize. But not really since that game has nearly every character's last name changed through translation at some point. No regrets.

I also assume Genny typed it that was since that's the way I verbally pronounce it IRL.

Edward clearly hampers the character I assume most people believe is going to be the winner, there's not a good chance of both of those making the finals. It's really going to come down to whom of those two can last, but I can't see both of them lasting at all.

Mizzurna Falls has always been one of those big want to plays for me, way back when I was making a manual notepad list of survival horror games that existed (this was probably way back in the early days of Steam, before the horror genre really took off in the indie scene). I was always curious since it was compared to Twin Peaks, and Deadly Premonition was also and I enjoyed that one a good bit.

And yeah, when I was tagging this year it was definitely the strongest one I had made a mental note of. Just tons of really great characters who debuted in this year; overall, 98 might stand up as the top year overall for me. We'll see once I finish the tags and play these myself for image updating purposes as well as for fun.
