v_charon 11/23/19 10:45:05 AM #16 | I think we found Frozen 2 to be around on par with the original, which is a good thing considering often Disney's sequel content has been a step down from the originals they're based upon. It's pretty good. Kristoff is a standout here for sure, but I think every character from the original grew and was improved upon, which is again unlike Disney canon's most recent sequel in Ralph Breaks the Internet. v_charon 11/15/19 11:49:30 PM #124 | I will be continuing to add new characters by the year tag updates for the next few years, but I will probably bring that to an end once I reach... perhaps the late 2000's or so. I'm curious to know what people in general think about this. My thinking for that range is because as the years progress, obviously the pool of those years grows ever larger. It's especially larger now because with the creation of Steam and the flourishing of the indie game environment we have now, games are more and more numerous than they ever possibly have been. In both number and quality, I'd argue. I also feel like nominations, in general, come from more recent years (generally dates of this last decade). I definitely wanted to bolster the 90's, that was for sure. To revisit older games and add characters from games that have perhaps fallen by the wayside and forgotten about. For posterity as well as in the good faith that perhaps in the long time having representation from games like this might be a boon in some future scenario. I feel like the early 2000's probably are just as lacking on representation as the 90's in general were, so I will definitely continue to scour the internet for various gems forgotten for now. But I do want a decided upon cutoff year. Any thoughts? --- :> Truly smilin' |

v_charon 11/13/19 9:25:09 PM #396 | Lopen posted... What makes something a character? It's been pretty aptly explained. It would be a lot different for me personally if FF1 forced you to have a predetermined party that's made up of certain character classes; that to me would be enough of a character to have never mentioned it. It's the fact you can have many or no red mages in your party at your choosing that bothers me; it becomes a unit at that point and not a character. They're much like Pokemon to me; you can get attached to them, you can treat them as characters if you want, but at the end of the day outside of the legendary ones Pokemon in their own universe are not characters but species. In terms of Final Fantasy, a red mage is a class instead of being a species but it's the same thing. You can play the game with or without the class/species, or you can have multiple ones at your choosing. I really feel like it's a pretty sound argument that can't really be refuted, I mean every part of your argument is invalid. I mean even the Four Warriors of Light thing; Red Mage is not even one of those according to Square. I'm not lobbying for the removal of them anyway, I don't care anymore because that ship sailed away a long time ago and given that every host this contest has had has probably has a nice negative opinion of me anyway I doubt you have to worry about losing your FF1 classes because someone thinks something I've said has enough merit to change the book on the subject. --- :> Truly smilin' |

A comic series that literally said "I am just going for second place" isn't really great propaganda if you want to get technical. I prefer Lightning but don't dislike Edward. It really wasn't that "oh no Lightning has won" as much as it was, "ugh, really", at least for me. It's a repeat of last year and I'm just not sure who really wanted this. It didn't help that the main person behind Edward's run literally wrote him into second place before he even got there. I personally did not wish to support such a thing. --- :> Truly smilin' |

v_charon 11/10/19 10:01:19 PM #114 | Finals ranked: Tidus vs. Kefka (CXVI) - Great quality match, close and both sides really into it for the long run. Not only ranking this as first since Tidus is my favorite winner, but the match itself was thrilling and never felt pre-decided. That's rare. Vivi vs. Locke (CXVIII) - Quality match and a good fight to the end. Again, another match where there was a lot going for both sides and you weren't sure who might win. Zack vs. Squall (CXIV) - Good quality, tight match. Nothing wrong with this. Cloud vs. Laguna (CXIX) - High quality match, scarred by the MWC factor. Balthier vs. Zidane (CVIII) - Cool match. I remember when people liked FFXII. Good times. Cecil vs. Zidane (CI) - Again just going to base this off of the character quality, which is pretty high. Auron vs. Sabin (CIX) - Not a bad final, good winner obviously but I don't think Sabin ever stood a chance here. But I don't think he was pushed and he's held up at least somewhat well in the years since. Kuja vs. Terra (CVII) - At least Terra didn't win. A good win for the formerly dominant king of the contest. Edgar vs. Tifa (CVI) - I like these characters and definitely participated. It's been too long for me to remember why it was so unpopular though. Celes vs. Kuja (CIII) - Pretty good quality final, don't think I played. Vivi vs. Rydia (CIV) - Good strong match, I think I might have participated a little but I'm not sure. Just going to rank this one according to characters. Gilgamesh vs. Vivi (CXI) - Poor memories of this because I am still 99% sure Vivi actually won this match due to alt voting, from someone that later confessed the account I thought was an alt of his was all along. I'm still certain he used both accounts in this final, and given it was so close then yeah, Vivi should actually be a 3 time champion. Even so, the match was contested tightly and at least entertaining. Even if I have a level of envy and disdain for how Gilgamesh actually won. Rydia vs. Cloud (CXV) - A bit sour on this in memory. I feel like this guy whom many dedicated the victory to disappeared from the board right after this. Lulu vs. Auron (CII) - Can't comment much about this other than the quality. Apparently there was cheating involved and alts though, but I don't think I participated in this. Marche vs. Lightning (CXIII) - A necessary, if rather stupid, conclusion. Zidane vs. Ashe (CXII) - Largest blowout around, and even though Ashe is certainly a legit character and even defacto main character of her game, she was never in this. I feel like the 3rd and 4th place finishers (Rydia, Tidus) definitely would have fought Zidane much more here. This might have been the original case of "drag along a train for the easy win". But it's further out of my memory than others. Reno vs. Kuja (CV) - The original bizarre win. This was more about voting against Kuja for some people I think, given his strength at this point in history. Definitely a strange result but I don't think it was particularly over-the-top like the last few have been. Zell vs. Yuffie (CX) - I'm not gonna go on too much about how this came to be. I'll just say I didn't like it and the quality is pretty low anyway. Steiner vs. Lightning (CXVII) - Yeah. Lightning vs. Edward (CXXI) - Rendered the previous year pointless, since obviously the end goal was for Lightning to win. Literally almost the same final with a historically weak IV character getting destroyed. Fang vs. Cid Pollendina (CXX) - Bad quality final with a boring end. Ranking the finals. I based these on the characters in the final, which of the characters won as well as the general tone of the finals match itself. For instance I like Lightning alright, but the finals she's been a part of have been rather poor quality I think. --- :> Truly smilin' |

I'm just saying these are weaklings, historically, from the same game and a character from another game that's the same crushed both in the finals over the last two years. It's so boring and I'm not sure what it is about this contest and predictable endings, but I'd say at least half the time you know who is the winning before the match starts. There's never any competition, and in the most popular "competition" on the board that feels a bit wrong. I mean Edward for instance needed 22 votes to reach the finals, right? He didn't even get those 22 voters in this final (or else he'd have had 220 votes). He didn't even get close to that. I mean I know trades were a thing obviously, but there was just zero excitement or interest to be had here for any side. Whether you wanted Lightning to win or not, you knew she was winning regardless of that and just... I don't see what fun there was to be had without the sense of competition that this contest is known for. --- :> Truly smilin' |
