It was "did you hear he's dead, because covid"

Ugh

Stay safe.

I wasn't anxious over it directly, like ahhh no my perfect streak wahhh

No, just like, I noticed at the end of the day that I was less organized and then realized I forgot the journaling

if I don't journal I get anxious -> this sounds bad -> inferred reasoning is that the person is dependent on the behavior -> badness of dependency on the behavior seems predicated on the idea of "if I don't do it things are worse" -> this is handled rather neatly with the fact that committing to doing it requires quite a small amount of effort. extraordinarily small.

"that's just how I am"

"I like myself just fine"

"I don't need to be able to run faster to be happy"

I would have said things like this a couple months ago, but after making discipline and self-improvement an integral staple of daily life, I look back and realize how much that mindset actually held me back from doing great things which didn't require me to move mountains in order to achieve

(again this isn't a persuasive essay. it's just kind of a reflection for me at this point)

Dude, I don't mean to downplay your progress, but you sound like one of those self-help people that are abundant in certain circles of the internet.

...And you would have sounded more convincing citing an excerpt from Atomic Habits.

Presupposing that "convincing" was my aim

I'm laying out cold hard facts because people who don't want to be convinced, won't be convinced. Can't help those who deny help.

But people who do want to be convinced, the facts will do it whereas me trying to be persuasive probably won't (and would derail into an argument faster, probably!)

I mean, you should be able to get the exact same effect by just brushing your teeth and changing clothes. The bed making step is just extraneous.

And yet. I've brushed my teeth and gotten dressed for my entire life. I even felt guilty on days when I skipped one or both of those. But discipline did not follow naturally as a result. Not after even 30 years.

What do I think the difference is?

Nobody expects me to make my bed.

If I see you at the mall, you don't know if my bed is made. You know if I'm wearing rags. You know if my breath stinks.

It's choosing self-discipline when the consequences aren't external, but internal. That's where the shift in mindset happens.

following my cousin's example I started a gratitude journal. day 2 today. each morning I write down 3 things I'm grateful for, because as he put it (because some inspirational guy put it this way) "you can't be feeling scared or angry if you're feeling grateful". so that's a pretty rad way to get some good perspective going into each day

I think I put too much stock into the idea of letting the book title be the topic title. It sounds like I'm commanding people lol. When "Make Your Bed" is on the cover of a book it's probably less offensive.

There's one other note I should have thought to add here.

After about 10 days of this, I brought it up in conversation with my cousin who is about 45. Married with kids. His eyes lit up and suddenly he was the enthusiastic one. He told me this speech inspired him 4 years ago and that he has made his bed every day since then. He's run a 50k since then. He weighed 290 pounds and currently weighs 210. He wakes up at 4:30am every day. And he's in my corner over here texting me all the time about it now.

You may have seen this commencement speech from the University of Texas at Austin in 2014:

https://youtu.be/pxBQLFLei70

The speaker is Admiral William McRaven. He draws from his experience in US Navy basic SEAL training to illustrate how small decisions and acts can have huge effects on people's lives.

This speech was so popular that he published a longer form of it into a book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31423133-make-your-bed

I'm here to testify that the simple act of reading this book and following its advice has started the process of giving my life a total make-over these past 3 weeks.

January 24th was day 1 for me. I've made my bed every day since then.

I've read a book every day since then as well. McRaven's book took 10 days at a chapter a day, then I moved on to something else.

I've woken up (and, more importantly, gotten out of bed) at 7:30 every day since day 17. Prior to that I got up around 9:45-ish or just whenever.

I've done push-ups every morning since day 18. My chest is starting to feel better and stronger and wants to keep going beyond the number I set as my initial low bar, so I've increased it a little.

None of these things on its own sounds all that life changing but the culmination of it all has made me calmer, less anxious, happier, feeling like I can do anything. I'm a bed maker now. I'm a reader now. I'm someone who works out now. I'm someone who always improves myself now.

When stuff this good happens to ya, ya just gotta tell people about it.

This may be a bit of semantics at this point.

Was using a past motif an accident? Almost impossible.

Did they expect everyone to notice? Doubtful.

Is it an "easter egg"? Well, to me that term suggests something more akin to a hidden thing you can do or go to or trigger or something. A song in and of itself being an "easter egg" just doesn't jive in my head.

But...is it something obscured from being obvious and a delightful moment when discovered? Yeah...kinda sounds like an easter egg. We need better words.

Hey Johnbobb. I'm glad you're here and talking about it. I've always loved how into movies you are, by the way. It's cool knowing someone who can just serve as a replacement for a cinematic encyclopedia.

Similar to E, I was a third party close to a situation involving an attempted/threatened suicide before. I had to go in the house of a couple I'd only visited once or twice and knock on their bedroom door and wake them up in the middle of the night. I think it is important to sit down and talk it all out. It is a huge thing to process and it's ok to lean on others to help you deal with everything.

social media places people into echo chambers by sorting people with others who think similarly

Yep

I deleted my facebook around new years 2017 and was totally detached from social media for at least 2 years. It was an overwhelmingly positive experience

At some point last year I made a new facebook because I was sick of being locked out of so many sites and whatnot that are dependent on it. I just set all the privacy settings to max, basically never posted, and didn't proactively friend request anyone. I just decided I'd accept any friend request I received with the only criterion being I had to recognize the name/face immediately. Eventually I did start commenting on posts and I've posted maybe 2 statuses. It's nice to be back and check what (a fraction of) people are saying.

That said. Since coming back (2020 basically), such a high percentage of posts I see are like this:

Someone calls out a nameless strawman on their utter bullshit. 30 likes and 7 comments ranging from "preach" to "YES" to .

Very seldom do I see anyone they are supposedly berating show up or react. But without fail these posts get so much praise. I'm like what the heck is going on here. You are competing to be the best one-sided arguer among people who agree with you? And most of the time the post in some way suggests they're so tired of reading the alleged bullshit from the other side. But where is it?? What on earth is going on.
