The entire point of the impeachment is to bar him from running again. Would rather he keep the last two weeks than resign.

Is there a reason Trump couldn't still be impeached after leaving office? It's never been done before, but there's no explicit rule against it and the Senate did a post-resignation impeachment trial in the 1870s.

Also this past couple of months could not have possibly gone any more spectacularly well for democrats. Beat Trump. Take the Senate. Splinter the republican party into two so that there is now no more feasible chance of any republican winning major office in this country for the forseeable future. Any establishment GOP candidate is gonna be branded a traitor by the MAGA crowd.

And they didn't even have to cave to anything further to the left of fucking Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to get it done.

Really the only way this could go badly is if they do sit around doing fuck all for the next two years and alienate the lefties even more but honestly, maybe that'd be the best thing for the country to have the two major parties splitting into four.

All I know is I wish I could bet on them NOT passing more stimulus relief, because I think I'd get more money that way.

The Republican party signed its soul with the devil and its shattered remnants have to try to pick up the pieces while his remaining minions continue to plague their soul. I honestly have no idea what they will look like in 2024. They've spiraled further down than I ever expected them to.

The loss of the Senate through Georgia was just devastating. It could not have made it more clear that everything done over the last two months has backfired. Georgia is shifting, but it's still a red state. I never thought I'd actually see a day where Georgia went solid blue.

I expect it to go right back to solid red if the Republicans put up an even slightly decent set of candidates in the future.

I mean what do you guys think the average MAGA voter is going to do now? Follow up in two years to make sure the senate, who just "backstabbed" their guy, goes back to red?

Either they'll get a new set of candidates who panders to them or they'll tune out. Most likely the latter.

Again, all Dems have to do is... SOMETHING to keep lefties from becoming irate and they've got the country on lock for a while.

almost lose the house, it's a single digit lead now. if you flip 5 votes on any issue, you win.
lost every state election, making 24 states fully republican controlled in a year of redistricting.
take the senate back but with a 50/50 split where kamala has to tiebreak it.

it could've gone much better and both houses are poised to flip in 2022. you're underestimating the republican party and overestimating the dems' ability to take charge here. i mean we both agree that bernie should absolutely push ahead but it's far more likely we're gonna get do nothing dems part 2, though in fairness it won't entirely be their fault this time since they barely have a majority in both house chambers.

The Senate will likely flip back. The Dems wanted not just a majority here, but a cushion, since they expect to lose seats in 2022.

This ending was basically the miracle the Democrats needed for this to not be a massive failure in Congress, but I suspect both of those seats will flip back so this win is ultimately only temporary.

Dems didn't flip a single house seat, if I remember right.

Honestly, they're only at war with each other now because they lost. One year from now, with an election looming, their voters will realize that despite their differences, they'd rather have Nazis storming the Capitol than progressive policies, and they'll come home to roost.

nah I don't think the establishment GOPers want any chance of having to cede power to a populist ever again and they'll crush anything close MUCH harder than the Dem est did Bernie from here on out. And when they do that they'll never come close to winning.

Again, stay active. Hold the people in charge now accountable for change or we're never gonna actually get it.

If every Trump voter is anti liberal (They arent) and if demographics dont keep changing (They will) Trump still lost the election.

2020 was peak hysteria. There werent any more converts Trump could win over.

I think the democrats are in a damn good position as long as they dont blow it by fracturing themselves which will require compromise by their tent poles

The problem with this logic is that "Trump lost the election, therefore the GOP is dying" is not what's being argued. Trump lost in a massive defeat because of him specifically driving turnout among Democrats. But Trump still got more votes than any other presidential candidate in history, save for one. He managed to turn out 10 million NEW voters, AFTER four years of his incompetence and divisive rhetoric.

I guess what I'm saying is that Trump managed to turn out, what, 15 million more Democratic voters to vote against the kind of man who we've seen very much in action this week. But at the same time, he managed to turn out 10 million Republican voters to either vote FOR him, or vote AGAINST Joe Biden...which hardly seems comparable, even if you dislike Joe Biden. I just don't have faith that those Democratic voters will stick around now that they've voted out the "threat", whereas I believe GOP voters have every reason to double down, since the thing they're voting for (NOT THE LIBS!) hasn't changed.

The Republicans who supported Trump's efforts to overturn the election have a lot to worry about when they're up for re-election again. Even those in solid red states/districts should still be worried, because they can lose their bid for re-election by getting defeated by a challenger in a Republican primary. And I bet you a lot of challengers will be lining up to end their chance at re-election by defeating them in a Republican primary, then they have to fight off a challenge from their Democrat opponent in the general election.
