I don't get it. Sometime I'll be doing something online, and I get interrupted. I check the wifi network on my screen, and it says "connected, no internet."

Every other device in the house is fine and experiences no disruption.

Once I restart the computer, it connects to the internet again as if nothing went wrong, making me sign into everything yet again. It really sucks when I'm doing work and have to go through all the authentication.

My old computer -- different brand, even -- did this too. A thorough googling gave me no insight as to why this is happening. Anyone here ever had to deal with this?

Everyone does indeed love Ura. Dude is the most friend-shaped guy alive, and his scrambles are always exciting.

We don't watch it live because lol time zones, but they post the matches the day after they happen on the NHK youtube channel under 30-minute "highlights." They're only up for a month or so. Thankfully, Grand Sumo Archive copies them and keeps them organized afterward.

I hope Hoshoryu is healthy again for this basho. Dude has extreme Final Boss Energy when he's on his game.

I started watching sumo matches on YouTube on a surprise algorithm whim, and I thought it was going to be silly and fun as a novelty.

Fast forward half a year later. My friends and I are watching the matches of every week on Friday and/or Saturday nights during modern tournaments. We all have our personal favorite rikishi (mostly Anoishiki). We all have the people we boo (mostly Kotozakura). We follow the rankings when they come out every two months and debate who should have gone where.

The best way I can describe it is that it's a mix of things that make any athletics entertaining, distilled:

  • Simplicity: The rules are extremely easy to understand. Get your opponent out of the ring or knock them down. Don't grab the topknot or hit with a closed fist. That's pretty much it. (There are a few corner case things, but those aren't important in 98% of bouts)
  • Stakes: There are no points. Every match is best-of-one. Win or lose, it's over quick, and there's no runback. The matches are fast, too; it can be over in 3 seconds. Every fraction of a second matters.
  • Athleticism: Don't let their size fool you. These guys are strong, limber, and fast. It makes things all the more exhilarating when you see guys outright lift or throw another. Some of the smaller rikishi like Asakoryu are sculpted like statues.
  • Personality and Style: Like in "pro" wrestling, each rikishi has a distinct personality to attach to, and their styles are signature. Unlike pro wrestling, there's no script. It's real. A few of them even have quick intros they get into before they step into the ring. It's easy to get attached to a favorite or three.
  • Injuries: It's a combat sport, and people get hurt -- but it's extremely rare for someone to outright get knocked out or get concussions. This keeps stakes high without any feelings of guilt in cheering for brain damage.
  • Frequency: Barring a big injury, you'll be seeing your favorite guy compete all 15 days. No waiting for months on end for the next fight!

Next basho (tournament) in a couple of weeks, and you can catch the previous tournaments on the Grand Sumo Archive channel on Youtube. Let me know if you get hooked like I did.

3.5 beaten. Definitely the weakest story patch since 3.0, but still solid nonetheless.

I love how the story intersects with the Unknowable Domain story, not just because of the scepters, but because the central question of UD was, "Is the universe predetermined or chaotic?" From Zandar's point of view, it was chaotic prior to Nous, which made it have limitless potential, but the creation of Nous forced it to be predetermined via THEIR "moments," which Polka has strictly enforced. By killing Nous, he sees himself as freeing the cosmos. It's a fantastic motive! If only he weren't willing to cause collateral damage bordering on "infinite" to do so...

  • FF X Magic crossover -- They NAILED it! The draft format's an all-timer and perhaps the most balanced ever, and the cards had tons of care put into them to be evocative of the source material while still mechanically sound. You can Suplex the Phantom Train! It needed to be around for longer! Yes, Vivi is a problem, but one ding doesn't ruin a wonderful thing. (I'm counting Ulti's here too)
  • Getting rid of mana burn -- I was skeptical at the time, but it opened a lot of design space previously locked away, and it rarely came up anyway. It did nerf some neat niche cards in older sets, but the upside is worth it.

  • Oran-Rief Ooze -- It's fine. There are cooler things to do with +1/+1 counters, but it's not embarrassing.
  • ETB Effects -- They were cooler when you didn't see them everywhere. Now they just exist.

Damn, 36 hours is rough.

I don't know if I can offer and real suggestions that haven't been said. I use melatonin occasionally, and that's been helpful (though I've been explicitly careful not to use it too frequently).

Do you have any sort of exercise routine during the week? Running has helped me a lot with sleeping (and also helps mitigate back pain too).
The worst part is, I'm functional 36 hours in. I'm just... used to it. Obviously not driving or anything.

No, I don't exercise much, I have a messed up shoulder that triggers on damn near anything that involves my arms -- including running, it turns out. Once I'm making enough money at this job I'm going to get physical therapy on it. For now, I walk my dog, and thankfully she likes to go fast.

I'm on Remeron, which actually isn't FDA-approved for sleep (it's normally an antidepressant), but at super low doses for some people it ends up being wonderful for it. Thankfully I was one of those people, since nothing else worked.

I appreciate the insight, FD. I should've given more details:

  • I use caffeine maybe once every two years, since it doesn't make me feel "less tired" but instead like I have electricity constantly shocking me. I've also never had alcohol in my life, nor any other "drug" one might think of, even marijuana.
  • Since I got my new job last year, I have been able to maintain a consistent "waking up" schedule.
  • I hate short-form content, but I definitely am talking on Discord up until bedtime, so that might give a little help.

Pun half-intended.

I've suffered from severe insomnia for around half my life now. "Severe" meaning "Without medication, I'm up for over 24 hours, no matter what." 36 hours is common. My medication has, thankfully, been fantastic, and I haven't built a tolerance to it.

Even so, I'm sick of it. Every once in a while it doesn't work, and I'm up at 3 a.m.

I'm not sure what to do. Apparently cases like mine are ludicrously rare. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Future Sight Borders
  • Chains of Mephistopheles
  • Shandalar (video game)
  • Yawgmoth's Will

  • Unstable
  • Stifle -- Complete trdl bias, this card was my jam. I've done so many tricky things with this unassuming "narrow" card: countered fetchlands and wasteland, stopped Stoneforge triggers, even saved myself from a "lose the game" Pact trigger that remains my coolest play ever.

Hot New Brew

  • Oracle of the Alpha
  • Slivers
  • trying to play anything when your opponent has two open blue mana
  • Mono-green stompy
  • Pro Tour
  • Booster Tutor -- It's a super cool gimmick! Unfortunately, it quickly gets out of control if you're playing 1v1 3-game matches, as you run out of packs and/or money fast. Even in Cube, it's easy to exhaust spare packs without some house rules. Use sparingly!
  • Goyfs -- For some reason, they always put a smile on my face. Probably because I played Tarmogoyf so many times in my life.
  • Bloomburrow -- I've never cared for kindred sets, but this is the best one ever. The art is wonderful, the story is locally concentrated (as the best MTG stories are), and the mechanics... yeah, like most kindred sets, we had some problems in Constructed. Not Bitterblossom-level, but it still required bans. Side note, I've never been able to draft kindred sets well; Bloomburrow remains the only format in which I've never trophied on Arena.
  • Damage redirection -- I understand why this is made so rarely, but I adore the silliness that can result. Harm's Way is one of my favorite cards.

Vanilla with Set Mechanic
  • Splitskin Doll

  • How cards' visuals have changed
  • Force spike
  • Red deck wins
  • Planeswalkers (card type) -- They started out bad, but they've gotten more clever over time. I disagree with Emeraldegg in that I think WotS planeswalkers were horrible; their static abilities were either useless or horribly overtuned. I'm glad we see far fewer of them now. There just isn't as much design space there as with most other card types.

Stale Meta
  • Every crossover ever
  • Nicol Bolas
  • -1/-1 counters
  • Sacrificeable artifact tokens
  • Little Girl (card)
  • Mirrodin
  • Gotcha
  • 2-card infinite combos
  • Wizards of the Coast -- A hollow shell of what was. A friend of mine from grad school worked there after graduation and left after less than two years because the management is awful. Just like Blizzard is actually Activision, WotC is just Hasbro now. There are a lot of passionate people there who are making good designs despite the awful demands, so I can't send them to the dungeon in good conscience.

Homelands
  • Damage on the stack
  • How quickly sets come out now
  • "Booster Fun"
  • Field of the Dead
  • Phyrexian Mana
  • Snow -- It's mildly interesting as part of a draft format by making people value drafting basics, but it's a shitshow for Constructed. There should NOT be strictly better versions of basics. smh my head.
  • Karn, the Great Creator -- More artifact bs, recursive tutoring, who could've possibly seen this snapping a format in half. Shocked pikachu face. It's not even an inspired design like Phyrexian mana arguably was.

  • Mono-green stompy -- It's a fun deck to just play big idiots and smash. I'd love to see it come back in Standard.
  • Pro Tour -- It's nice to have it back. I don't follow it like I used to on account of having a job and a dog, but it's awesome to see the best players square off and cheer for favorites. It helps that I actually know some of them IRL. Coverage has gotten good since its return, too. It needs better marketing.

  • Red deck wins -- A staple of Standard and Pauper formats. When RDW is good, it's the sign of a healthy meta. When it's TOO good, though, it's extremely oppressive and annoying. That said, taking RDW to a tough event takes way more skill than most people realize.

Stale Meta

  • Gotcha -- It's fun one time. After that it's annoying. Carnivorous Death-Parrot having its ability force you to say all five "Gotcha" names in a cycle was clever.
  • 2-card infinite combos -- They're so boring nowadays. Actually, they've been boring since Splinter Twin. I find Rube Goldberg machine combos fun, but every time some Commanderpilled jackass tutors for Splinter Twin or Exquisite Blood, I just wonder why they bothered playing and wasting everyone's time. They're unhealthy for 1v1, too, imo.

Homelands
  • Damage on the stack
  • How quickly sets come out now
  • "Booster Fun" -- Vomit-inducing name that feels dystopian. Call them anything else. They don't make boosters more fun than they otherwise would be.
  • Field of the Dead -- "Surely this can't be broken, let's make it non-legendary" -- statements by the utterly deranged, probably. Turns out the deck's pretty easy to make when nonbasics are already good, and it's incredibly low-effort.
  • Phyrexian Mana -- I've begrudgingly accepted it being on abilities that otherwise have large mana costs or spells that still require colors, but considering how it's destroyed multiple formats for multiple years, into the dungeon it goes.
