Board 8 > finally playing Undertale for the first time

my journey through my steam backlog has at last led me to Undertale. i have heard many a thing about this over the years and its finally time to see what all the fuss is about. i know its of high quality since it was voted best game ever by the most prestigious of websites gamefaqs dot gamespot dot fuck fandom dot com. ive managed to avoid most spoilers but i do know a few things. i dont think anythings been ruined though.

anyway im just about done with the first town i think. met the man the myth the legend himself Sans Undertale from smash bros ultimate! wasnt expecting him this early tbh. actually a little surprised when he showe up. in an 'oh shit its him!!' kinda way. that was a fun little puzzle section. beat the boss papyrus and now i think i have to go on a date wit him which should be something

enjoying it so far. nothing mind blowing yet but maybe thats to come. or probably just the whole experience since its an earthboundlike

battle system is neat. im going for the pacifist ending so im afraid mercying all the random encounters might get tedious. the bosses though oh boy. was expecting some twists to the system and hey already got one. this could be fun and or incredibly annoying especially since theres no controller support

music is nice so far but nothing has really blown me away but i know that the one tune everyone talks about is yet to come.

so yeah hopefully this doesnt disappoint!

The fact that you know there's a "pacifist ending" means you've already been spoiled enough that some of the game's luster will wear off. The best way to experience this game your first time IMO is to go in completely blind and treat it like a regular RPG. But that's kind of impossible since it's been out for a decade and everybody already knows its shtick

beated! well the neutral ending at least. will hold off on thoughts until i get the pacifist ending. not planning on going for genocide right now. maybe one day though

anyway holy shit at the final boss. not sure what i was expecting but it certainly wasnt that.

wasnt expecting it to turn into a horror game there for a bit. was actually slightly on edge there mostly because after that final boss who knows what could appear?? as it was the amalgations or whatever were kinda creepy though. true final boss wasnt bad but the final boss had more impact imo. i mean look at that thing wtf. ending was nice. i missed a few things so looked them up. that mystery key i got but never used. actually went to that house in the ending walk but didnt think to use it from the inventory. thought itd be an automatic type thing oh well. also that big door in snowdin which apparently is a totally optional thing and yeah not gonna go for it. also though sans was like an optional boss or something but no only in genocide. maybe i actualy will go for that route sometime

overall enjoyable little game. wasnt sure how knowing about the endings would ruin things but yeah i can see now. saw some stuff about how multiple runs and such get worked into playthroughs so yeah that was missed out on. oh well thats probably a thing that i wouldve missed unless i played the game what 10+ years ago. did not pick up on playable character and named character being different so that was a nice surprise. thought there was some kinda weirdness with the experiment or something and you were brought back to life.

didnt quite hit me as a greatest game ever but its had a lot of years to set expectations so that didnt help. and missing out due to knowing about the endings of course. and also maybe having played earthbound since i was seeing it everywhere. still though really good game and i can see where the hype comes from even if it didnt really get me

Yeah, the game is probably a bit more quaint like 10 years later, glad you still had a good experience with it

If you're playing it in 2025 you must do genocide. Tons of games have since copied the vibes of regular and pacifist but nothing has really come close to replicating genocide.

Thankful every day that I hopped on both the Undertale and Deltarune bandwagons immediately lol though I have more personal reasons too for thinking them so highly.
