They're mainstream luxury. It's the ultimate entry to show elite status that "you've made it".

Watches like Richard Mille watches are the ultra elitest symbol that would take 30 Rolexes to equal the value of one.

With that said, Rolexes are well made and built to last. If you want to save money, Tudor watches are basically Rolexes just without the $5k crown stamp logo.

Good comment but I would just argue, durablitity is almost never an important factor in luxury craft or fashion. You can buy a $50 quartz watch about as durable (and as good at keeping the time) as any Rolex.

Similarly, a uniqlo sweater is as durable or more than any high fashion piece.

Are you arguing "good" wireless over a shitty pair of wired? Obviously those are better but I'm not talking about $20 headphones or those garbage wired headphones that came with the phone. I stopped using those kinds of headphones years ago once I started getting into audio.

I'm arguing that a jack isn't automatically better than bluetooth just because it's wired, because a phone with a bad sound card or shitty jack may not produce better sound even if you have a quality pair of wired headphones. Bluetooth technology has advanced sufficiently and doesn't rely on the limitations of hardware.

When using good wireless headphones with advanced bluetooth, I think the quality of sound is better than most people are used to and really only becomes a matter of contention for proper audiophiles. In which case, listening to music while travelling (and from a phone, probably off a streaming service) is probably not really when you need the best quality of sound.

I'm on the Skypeia arc.

You can see how much effort went into the gags and music and everything. They were trying to bring the manga to life, not just copy it panel for panel.

Even just minor stuff. For example, there's a bit where Sanji is trying to find Nami and he activates his internal "mellorine" scanner to peel the horizon. it's stupid but funny. i feel they don't go out the way for these bits as much anymore.

My biggest headphone frustration is that the jack in my laptop is shitty and the slightest movement will mean my wired headphones no longer connect properly.

Ok here's a very good point. When you have a shitty laptop with a shitty integrated soundcard, your sound quality on a jack will be much worse than bluetooth (which can be improved with software updates). I mean on my crappy laptop I can literally hear artifacts and background noise from the in-built microphone when trying to listen to things.

That's not even to mention problems with the jack itself.

I went through two 7 hour flights listening to my bluetooth headphones and had 60% battery left. I get a week or two out of normal use. It takes about 30 minutes to fully charge with USB-C. Total non issue.

Kind of like myself, I suspect much of the resistance to wireless headphones is stubbornness over actual reasons. I mean a lot of the people who argue about sound quality are listening to spotify music on $20 earplugs, lol

I'm going to be completely honest about the headphone jack situation.

For years I defended its corner. It felt like paying more for less when apple removed it.

Then I got my sony wh1000xm3 headphones and I can't even remember why I felt so strongly about it. These things have the best sound and the bluetooth virtually never drops out. With a decent phone the bluetooth does not significantly drain battery.

The reasons for keeping a headphone jack seem to be disappearing, because I can't remember needing one.

If I had to make some clumsy comparisons, think of the character driven story telling of Red Dead Revolver or GTA mixed with the world of Game of Thrones, with the decision options of a Bioware game like Mass Effect or Kotor but much more fleshed out.

You're not playing your own RPG character. You play geralt. It's his story. However what happens, the alliances you make, the ending you choose, and really with every sidequest there are a dozen different ways to choose each.

gmims44 posted...
Until not that long ago, the best argument for a manual transmission was that they got better fuel economy: the direct mechanical connection was more efficient than a torque converter ("slushbox"). The difference was never huge, but with the high fuel prices in Europe, it would add up to a lot of money over time, so it's not hard to understand why manuals have been so much more popular there. The other argument, and I guess the best in the case of performance cars, was that manual cars were quicker than automatics, again due to the direct mechanical connection rather than a slushbox between power and load.

With modern automatic transmissions, though, neither reason is really true anymore. Manufacturers use enough tricks with them that you don't take a fuel economy hit, and it's actually getting harder and harder to find performance cars with a stick, because modern dual-clutch automatics can shift way faster than even the most talented driver. That really just leaves two arguments for the stick: 1. The upfront cost is still cheaper, because manual transmissions are simpler, and 2. For people who enjoy driving, manuals are fun.

#2 is what some people get all hipster-ish about, because it's the more traditional and "pure" way to drive a car, but you don't have to listen to them. I mean, I bought a GTI with a stick because I don't have a long commute and I live in East Tennessee where I can just about pick any direction and hit an amazing road, but that doesn't mean I would recommend a manual for most people in most other situations, because I wouldn't.

Good post

Restaurants lose a fuckload of money shutting down for a couple of weeks at a time. They didnt just fire everyone to be an asshole I'm sure

A franchise of this size with a failing restaurant doesn't suddenly discover it's run out of money and has no choice to let everyone go immediately. They would have known for months. They projected the failure but needed the staff until the due date, so they kept it confidential to reduce the noise. The carefully curated PR campaign proves it. They fired everyone but they're telling the public it's just a temporary renovations. That's not what's happening. The business shut down, they're going to put a different business in there.

No one tries to be an asshole, they just do it anyway when it suits them.
