The gameplay is hilariously stiff and outdated now, but I thought the story was more focussed, and the world was an excellent representation of how lower class citizens are truly judged and handled. It's still a good game.

It's one of the few games that I rushed through the main story and never even touched the DLC

It's an amazing game, it just wasn't for me, i guess.

I missed the boat on the first 2 unfortunately, all seems too dated to go back now.

Witcher 3 was maybe the most complete game I've ever experienced, though.

Witcher 3? It's like neither.

If I had to make some clumsy comparisons, think of the character driven story telling of Red Dead Revolver or GTA mixed with the world of Game of Thrones, with the decision options of a Bioware game like Mass Effect or Kotor but much more fleshed out.

You're not playing your own RPG character. You play geralt. It's his story. However what happens, the alliances you make, the ending you choose, and really with every sidequest there are a dozen different ways to choose each.

Nah.

I mean, don't get me wrong, The Witcher 1 was also a great game when it came out and took the gaming industry by storm, but I will NEVER go through it again. The story is not very interesting. There are sidequests that are long as fuck and give garbage rewards. Combat is tiresome, grinding is a pain in the ass and for the longest time you don't have access to useful spells and combos so that makes combat even more boring.

Meanwhile I can jump back in on Witcher 3 and have fun from the get go.

Probably the worst comparison I've seen.

It might resemble Diablo in tone and environment (similar NPCs, costumes and stuff), but the two are worlds apart. Witcher is third person, revolves heavily around the alchemy system and has sidequests. Diablo is isometric, relies more on equipment bonuses (which are RNG most of the time) and only has primary Act missions.

Witcher 1 is definitely my favorite of the trilogy.

To be fair there's some nostalgia bias since I literally began with the series back in 2007 just after the first game came out (I just built a new PC and saw a recent video review of the game and wanted to give it a shot). But there are quite a few things I prefer in the original game over the sequels like the overall story, the atmosphere, the soundtrack and some of the gameplay differences. The timed clicking combat didn't bother me, I really liked the leveling system, and I still think it had the best alchemy system of the trilogy.

Witcher 3 is definitely an amazing game and still my favorite of 2015, and it's obviously more polished with much better visuals, a more impressive scope and superior presentation. But I still think the first game is my favorite of the three.

I loved Witcher 3, but IMO the writing in 2 was so much better. Especially the characters, I was so disappointed with how some of them were portrayed in 3. Roche and Ves come to mind

What platform are you playing it on?

I first played it on PS4 Pro and the combat felt very stiff indeed.
I'm now replaying it on pc at 60fps and way less input lag and the combat almost feels entirely different.

Its amazing how much a difference 60fps and less input lag can be.

Well if you think the gameplay is stiff on pc, on consoles it feels like Geralt is in molasses.

I just picked up the collection on steam a few days ago. My pc doesn't have a disc drive.

Currently replaying the main game so I can level up and start the DLCs.
I know I can skip doing all that and go straight to them but I want to relive the entire experience again.

I played 2 but I just couldn't finish it. Was just so boring and it had some if the worst combat I have ever played. I understand "weighty" combat, but it honestly just felt like everything I did had like 20 frames of input lag. It was absolutely maddening and I just couldn't take it anymore.

I liked the story, atmosphere, dialogue (and music!) in 1, but there was a point around the middle where it was a struggle to keep playing.

2 I found a bit easier to get through. I can't really choose between it and 1 in terms of story.

3 was a bit of a reversal: a far better game, but the story didn't grab me as much.

The gameplay definitely leaves something to be desired in all 3 though, but at least it gradually improved in each game.

I'm about 40 hours into the witcher 3 and the story/characters and works is great but I cant get over the outdated gameplay and stiffness of the controls it's been a hurdle to get over to the point i take week long breaks from it.

Finding it hard to get into and I usually love story focused games but I dont find the witcher 3 to be fun to play rather more fun to experience how everything unfolds.
