the watcher is a busted design where optimal play is very linear and boring yet very strong and the majority of the cardpool is just terrible

this must be an intimidating thing to work on / announce

they're basically the originators of the genre and also the best game in the genre, they have a ton to live up to (which they already sort of failed last attempt when they added the watcher)

there's way too many board clear effects floating around right now and that one is by far the most obnoxious

but one of the better ones, which gave +4 multiplier to a certain suit, is nerfed to +3 (which means you flush is now +15 instead of +20). it's a standard "reduced fun by 25%" across the fucking board.

maybe it should have been changed to a +400 multiplier to a suit, which would increase fun by like 10000%

I checked back on Arena a few months ago, and it seemed like they had just completely ruined it by milking the fuck out of it. They had tons of sets for random crossovers and just seemed like it was tying to milk as much money as possible out of people.

that's just how MtG is in general nowadays. the most popular format by far is commander, and commander players love crossovers and stuff so now there are a billion crossovers

it's about orbit, distance, size of moon and distance from sun. basically just a lot of parameters that have to come together in the right way. I'm not intending to argue it was all "set up" by some higher power or anything since I don't believe that either. But I think the people saying stuff like how it's just the same as you blocking out buildings with your thumbs are simplifying to a level they are missing the point. It's a rare coincidence that makes something truly amazing to look at and everyone should appreciate how cool the natural world can be

I think there's something to be said for the eclipses here just barely working. like, the moon covers the sun so perfectly cleanly. saturn the moons are way bigger in comparison to the sun so it's less of a dramatic thing

I like megumin a lot and I still thought the spinoff kinda sucked, I dropped it partway through. it's just way slower and all the jokes are so much worse. basically trying to just be a normal show in the konosuba setting

honestly I think that's why the show works so well, it doesn't have that one character who just exists to drag the flow of conversation back in a normal direction. everyone is just sort of bonkers to varying degrees and all in totally different ways so they pull things all over the place

aside from the horny fantasy part of it (I have no doubt this is some of it) it also has some story functionality too

1) easy way to introduce characters to each other and have them stick together without needing a more complex hook/backstory
2) everyone's familiar with it by now so it's a setting easily grasped at a glance
3) allows you to have a "bad guy" protagonist but still not have him be totally bad since at least he treats his slaves nicely
4) does fit in how the world is set up since usually these sorts of magical fantasy settings with a bunch of non-human races have tons of casual racism everyhwere

Not me, I'm using godot. I'd never make my own engine since 1) it seems very complicated and 2) it's basically a guarantee of never (or almost never) actually doing any of the gamedev part which is what I find interesting.

he'd just mentioned before in the topic that he was making his own engine. but considering he's talking about directly making openGL calls and needing a second library version for vulcan I suspect monogame is not involved (wouldn't it handle that sort of thing? probably?)

it's basically all stuff you don't need to worry about if you're using an engine instead of making your own

I've been working on my own attacks/combat system, trying to do a thing where there's different classes of attack and you get to pick one from each. but it's hard finding things that are distinct enough.

melee: sword / hammer / whip(?)
ranged phys: gun / bow&arrow / boomerang
ranged energy: laser beam / flamethrower / ????

and then maybe a special move category but I haven't thought about that part at all

Well, sure, but still a video game character.

I'm just thinking about people I know who are not very into video games (often because they're fairly old) and imagining asking if they know/recognize characters and pikachu just seems like a more likely yes than mario to me.

and when you think about it this way, lara croft is just laughable. probably not even top 100

I guess that's true, my perspective is somewhat skewed by the sorts of people I hang around with (bunch of tech nerds). I had all my conversations related to this a week ago back when it was discovered. I think that's probably why you don't really see talk about it somewhere like here; it's sort of inscrutable to people without some tech background, and many of those who do have the tech background would be hearing about it more quickly in other channels.

The fact that it's not even a hack, it's just a thing that could have become a hack but didn't because they got caught first doesn't really make for an exciting story if you don't also uderstand some of the background info, the seriousness, the sorts of open-source culture involved, etc

fortunately for you I think the general interpretation of an italics-only message like that wouold be to read it as the person themselves doing an action. so it would have more or less the same meaning.

seems like there are people who cap out around 35 fps

it's not about reaction time, it's about visual perception, the two are definitely different. Personally I'm not super surprised by the results, since individual people tend to be different in all sorts of possible ways, but it's definitely not something I knew before

my grandmother did this once with little seaweed snack packets only to learn that
