would we get a moon and a sun that just happen to be the exact same size that they can block each other out like that? :v like, what are the odds of that happening? It had to be intelligent design.

I mean they aren't the same size, but there is something weird where the Sun is 400 times farther from us than the Moon, and the Sun is 400 times larger than the Moon so they can perfectly align like that.

There's that whole hollow moon theory, and that the moon is artificial + intentionally set at that specific distance for whatever reason.

Well for starters eclipses arent always total much of the time the distances are off so the moon doesnt cover the sun entirely they are called annular eclipses.

The moon is also currently moving away from Earth with 3.8 cm per year, and Earth is moving away from the sun with 6 cm per year.

The moon wasn't always at that distance and will not be at that distance in the future. We just happen to exist in the few million year period where they match up.

Troll topic aside, this is the interesting part. We happen to not only live in a unique time period and circumstance, but also be aware that we live in it. We may be the only planet in the universe that experiences total solar eclipses in this way, and we kinda take it for granted (like everything else)

Place your finger in front of one eye and a large object such as your home or even something way smaller like a shoe. Play around with how close and far your finger is to that one eye.

The solar eclipse operates on the same concept.

I think there's something to be said for the eclipses here just barely working. like, the moon covers the sun so perfectly cleanly. saturn the moons are way bigger in comparison to the sun so it's less of a dramatic thing

it's about orbit, distance, size of moon and distance from sun. basically just a lot of parameters that have to come together in the right way. I'm not intending to argue it was all "set up" by some higher power or anything since I don't believe that either. But I think the people saying stuff like how it's just the same as you blocking out buildings with your thumbs are simplifying to a level they are missing the point. It's a rare coincidence that makes something truly amazing to look at and everyone should appreciate how cool the natural world can be

Even if it's improbable for the moon to be barely large enough to sometimes fully obscure the sun given the distances of the two from Earth, just because it's improbable for something to happen by chance doesn't mean it's impossible. Highly improbable things do sometimes happen out of pure coincidence.

Because the modem banana wasnt made by god. Its a hybridized monster of a plant that doesnt even function as a fruit because the banana itself doesnt have any seeds. Its less natural then Frankensteins monster.

But what about in a couple million years or so when the moon will no longer be the correct distance from earth to block out the sun?

I mean, it is really sad that that stuff happens, but if you have faith you can find comfort in the hope that the babies and toddlers went to heaven or got reincarnated (depending on what you believe happens after you die) at least. Which is a bit less cruel than thinking they lost their single chance at being alive for all eternity. At least that's how I look at it. :v

Exactly. For all we know, we're the only planet in the universe this happens to from an observable standpoint. Sure, the universe is big and it could happen quite often. But I also like to think in spite of it, other planets do have unique and odd occurrences if you were to be on it as an observer. Nothing wrong with unique circumstance.

I think there is a stronger case for the universe running on comedy than there is for it being intelligently designed

E.g. we have a coincidentally perfectly sized moon because it has resulted in several funny things over the ages.

Guys, it's okay they went through excruciating pain because they're with god now. He just works in mysterious ways, god's plan is ineffable.
