It might seem bizarre you can vote and join the army but not drink, but there is a logic behind separating a few of those adult rights. Most writers before never dared to have lgbt characters in the past so allegories were almost mandatory in the 90s or early 2000 for example. Ike and Soren in Fire emblem(seriously Soren "coming out" as half laguz and saying it's "against the will of the godess" makes me thing they really wanted to do this, but did not dare to commit). I questioned Ike's sexuality in Fire emblem and Yuri/Flynn. It was obvious in Lord of the ring that the characters were not intended to be "queer coded".
