The Witch - 54%
It Comes At Night - 44%
The Blair Witch Project - 56%
Heriditary - 57%

I guess horror movies that have a high critic score and a mixed audience score are more likely to be good going by this. I should check those other movies out.

I watch like pretty much every horror movie that comes out and the only opinions I listen to are random comments from random people I see online.

Horror is a genre I really enjoy, and have learned to never look into reviews like this because they are typically really far off the mark, a lot of times with critics also. It's definitely the most inconsistent genre when looking for opinions and reviews prior to watching.

I think critics are much better at recognizing a good horror movie these days. It was bad for a long time though yeah.

I actually thought both The Witch and Blair Witch Project were pretty good.

I can imagine most of the low audience score for The Witch being from comments like "omg I can't even understand them!"

I think the issue for all of them is that they're expecting some typical horror movie where a monster chases them and there's lots of cheesy jump scares or whatever.

I get some people expected something different thanks to the marketing.

But it's a solid movie based around paranoia and distrust. Maybe it's more of a thriller than horror though. But the ending was pretty horrific so I dunno.

Get Out got a good one too. Maybe they were marketed better so people knew what to expect?

I'm guessing it's because horror movies aren't very good.

Don't get me wrong, i do enjoy them immensely. Well, some of them. But even the good ones are pretty terrible.

That's because majority of people that watch horror movies are casual movie goers. Recent horror movies are no longer the ones that interest that type. For example, I used to have a group of friends where all the girls were the "basic bitch" stereotype. They loved to see horror movies but they loved the generic jumpscare movies. But they hated movies like the babadook and the witch.

Mostly because these movies are slow burners and they are usually a metaphor for something

I heard The Witch was fantastic, especially for a director with 0 movie under his belt.

But yeah exclusively horror going fans I think uhh... likes jump scares and typical plot lines that they don't have to be distracted by

The trailers were also edited and marketed horribly. It was a fantastic movie, just wasn't sold properly.
