| berlyman101 03/14/23 6:17:35 AM #132 | I just watched it. It's a maximalist movie. Which is what some people would call a "meme" movie in this day-and-age. It's in the vein of postmodern novels in movie form where the point is not the plot but the experience. It's heavy in symbolism and often references other forms of media/art (like It seems like more conservative types of people don't enjoy those types of things so much. It does wrap things up neatly with everyone going through some character growth but that's sort of incidental. I do think Quan stole the show with his monologue shots. Michelle Yeoh did her job as the lead. I preferred The Fablemans but it was a solid movie. | berlyman101 03/08/23 5:42:14 PM #8 | I lived with my grandmother for 9 years. she had it the whole time but it got much worse towards the end. it got increasingly bizarre and confusing me for other people was common. one time she mentioned my father, whom she had not seen in years and had never really mentioned in conversation since him and my mom split up about 14 years earlier. I found it interesting that she mentioned him to me while not knowing who I was and misremembering members of her own family. The owner invited me on to "work on projecting confidence," which I don't think I really did. This set is my material from the last few months and I'm sort of over it. That said, I cared about this performance quite a bit and while I don't think it sucked I also don't think it pops in the way I want if I'm going to use this video as tape for bookers. I needed a good 5+ minute tape and it's ok but I don't think it'll stand out. Normally I go slower but I felt a bit rushed. This was supposed to be a 7-minute set and I could have taken a bit more time to get comfortable on stage and let my pauses fill in more. I sort of got caught between deadpan (which is my usual approach) and trying to win the audience. The guy before me majorly bombed with some really racist material and it was uncomfortable in the room when I went onstage, so I tried to open with a friendlier approach than normal. I also cracked a bit early on but I did better later in the set. I'd give it a C+/B- for what I was trying to do. Some of the jokes worked but I had a nervous energy throughout. I'm bummed because everyone says that they like me and my jokes but that my energy is nervous and sometimes stiff. I've been doing this almost every night for over a year now and I thought I'd be further and I can't seem to shake the nervousness.
