how much of the story is spent on the MC going to meet his dad? (try to envision how many pages each part of the story will be); is the bulk of the story the road trip?

Not very much if any, it's mostly just background information.

how old are the kids? are they old enough to get in the concert legally?

Old enough to drive, so like just on the edge of 18 I suppose? A bit younger maybe.

have the kids gone on road trips before? how long is the drive?

I'd say not, and probably like 10 hours?

-where are they meeting all of these interesting characters if they're spending their time in the car?

My idea was to have them be friends and family of the main character generally.

-presuming they get into the concert, do they meet the band? is the concert small enough for that to be possible?

I feel like the interactions in and around the van or car are where a lot of stuff happens, so maybe not?

You asked for help, and I'm helping you by saying don't do it. What other stories do you have?

Mmm... nah I'm still gonna do it anyway for fun.

I do also have this story called Point Nemo since I read about it on Reddit and thought it would make a cool story. Point Nemo is a place in the Pacific Ocean where they decommission space ships and old satellites. I have an idea for it to be semi-futuristic, where this guy decides to be a hermit, or wild man, and lives out there on a kind of man-made island. Old space junk is constantly just falling around his house and into the water. That's about as much as I have. Maybe someone from space has to come back to Earth for some reason and lands there and then... something... happens, I dunno.

I normally do the thing myself but this one has had me stuck for ages. I'd either push through or just move on but I really like the premise (maybe CE will disagree, but that will be good feedback too).

So it's set in Michigan in the 1980s'. Or in the U.K somewhere. A barefoot lad with cheek of tan goes to visit his dumbass father across the country and comes back with all this new, obscure music. He shows his friends and they listen to it, listen out for it on the radio, but it rarely plays etc. Then they find a newspaper advertisement for one of the bands doing a show. They pile into the Second Base Mobile and go on a road trip, clutching this newspaper advertisement, trying to get to the show. Hilarity ensues, I guess.

But that's all I have. I want there to be a bunch of weird characters, like something you'd see in a Wes Anderson movie, or something out of Daria or whatever. But what actually HAPPENS? I can't think of interesting situations and conflicts, and broader context. I don't want it to be just people bouncing around talking about their feelings and ****. Y'know?

I was just pondering the fact that some people thought Rose wasn't just a pander to Chinese audiences, but I remember that the government didn't like parts of one of the Pirates of the Carribean movies because an actor from Hong Kong played a pirate/villain or something.

Yeah I initially assumed it was just hippy stuff but people kept telling me how good it's been for them and how a lot of pro athletes also do it etc etc.

Just in terms of muscle strength, less muscle pain, flexibility, even improvements in mood (although most kinds of exercise will do that I guess).

V is one of the better Treehouse of Horrors, but I just can't go past Kingsized Homer. On the whole I think it's the stronger episode, but maybe I'm biased against the Treehouse ones since they're anthologies or whatever.

OK!

I loved The Last Airbender! Like, wow. I wish I had stuck with it earlier. It's a show with really tight story structure (even most of the filler episodes usually have characters or concepts that come back in some way), amazing characters, and so much heart.

Like I said earlier, it really reminded me of GoldenSun with the four elements and the bending and whatnot. It also clearly takes a lot of inspiration from various Asian cultures. I think I heard somewhere they consulted a lot of martial arts experts for choreography and inspiration for bending techniques. There's so much cool stuff you can do with concepts like that and it worked out well because the action is amazing.

I think Sokka and Katara are my favourite characters. They each have great arcs. Also Aappa because he's fluffy and derpy. I enjoy Sokka's in particular. He's always funny but at his core he's very unsure of himself, but projects a lot of cockiness. I really enjoyed his episode with the sword training master. Of course there's also Zuko, who turned out to be great as well, largely thanks to Iroh, who is one of the best characters I've seen in anything ever. Two of my favourite scenes from the show feature him. The Leaves From The Vine in Tales of Ba Sing Se, where I cried like a little girl, and during his speech to Zuko when he's about to set Aappa free.

Given that this show is on Nickelodeon, I think it would have been so easy for it to be mediocre. For it to be too jokey, to pander too much to small children, for it to shy away from heartfelt moments, but it doesn't, which is itself a pretty amazing achievement.

As I said before, there's a lot of heart. One of the moments that still sticks with me is Toph and Sokka talking about Katara and how strong she is, while she's chilling in the lake underneath them and can hear every word. I like to write fiction in my spare time and it kind of makes me depressed because all the characters are so fleshed out and they show themselves and what they're about in just about every interaction, and you end up with awesome moments like that.

Although I am still really confused about the nature of that lion turtle dude.

That's about all I have at the moment. I'll probably watch the whole series again in the near future. Also I'm on to Korra soon. I'm seeing many mixed reactions in this topic, haha.

Last Exit to Springfield really is my favourite episode of the show. I don't say that lightly either - it's a masterpiece. Homer's Enemy is great, and a great commentary on the show itself, though, in fact I think it's one of the most watched episodes ever? Or highest rated, or something like that. My favourite line from that episode is: "Good lord, this place is a palace. I live in a single apartment above a bowling alley and below another bowling alley."

But Last Exit to Springfield just perfectly encapsulates everything great about those early seasons. Come gather 'round children, it's high time ye learned, about a hero named Homer and a devil named Burns.

Also Last Exit to Springfield has Abe Simpson's "I tied an onion to my belt" story.
