When you watch a lot of movies that are action comedy, or just not straight-up comedies, they almost never undermine the bad guys with jokes and zingers. If they do, they do it less and less frequently the earlier into the movie you go, because the bad guys need to be taken at least somewhat seriously. Not that every movie has to be the same, but take Mulan for example (just because I happened to watch it yesterday). At the start, the Huns are played 100% straight-faced. They don't stumble over the walls, the Chinese guards don't throw one-liners at them or hit them with frying pans. They're terrified and everything is as serious as a heart attack. Then the comedy comes - and when it does, the Huns are rarely if ever the subject of it. If anything they get MORE menacing as the movie goes on. If you mean the entire subplot of Finn and Rose doing their own mission, it was vitally important to the story. If you mean the three minutes where they're in the casino, then sure, maybe that could've been skipped and FInn and Rose could have been arrested when they parked illegally, but there's something to be said for worldbuilding, and the casino was hella interesting to look at. Was it though? It seemed like it only existed to solve a contrivance the movie invented so they would have something to do. It's usually the crappy dialogue that doesn't age well and makes it painful on a repeat viewing (or a viewing that doesn't have a theater full of people chuckling). One-liners CAN work and hold up over time, they just have to be good. I think a lot of it in Marvel movies or the latest Star Wars doesn't hold up because they're not thought about as much or not constructed as jokes. Usually dry or sarcastic humour works better, which is where I think Marvel and other movies these days fall short. If you're trying to diffuse tension or show your movie doesn't take itself too seriously, a sarcastic/dry take on things works much better than something zany. Think of anything anyone says in Age of Ultron vs some of the stuff Bill Murray says in Ghostbusters. Like, "Let's split up" - "Good idea, we can do more damage that way" is STILL funny to me every time, but when I watched Age of Ultron again recently and heard the "hide the zucchini line" it was poison.
