No, that is really how war was fought back then. The basic idea was strength in number and field formation. You see, compared to our modern firearms, the old firearms back then were laughably bad. They simply didn't pose enough threat that could overturn the advantage in number/formation.

Had one side foolishly decided to disperse or take cover, the opposing side would have mounted a cavalry/bayonet charge in a flash, driving them off the battlefield even further (the movie showed this too). Both sides knew that they had to maintain formation and field presence to defend against skirmish; so they stood their ground at all cost, even amidst the flying projectile, and took turn firing at each other.

Later on firearms became increasingly deadly, deadly enough to overturn the advantage in number. So we slowly abandoned the open field war and once WWI began soldiers started to dig trenches everywhere.

Problem is, for every "ghoster" there's 10 people behind them willing to take the job.

So them "sticking it to the man" just adds one more phone call or email to the recruiting department.

And I get it, the US does this all the time where they say if civilians didn't want to die it was the government's fault for the war and they should have surrendered, etc. It's a nice narrative because you talk about some bad thing an adult did instead of trying to explain why some babies deserved to die. But regardless of which war you're trying to justify killing civilians in, it's wrong every time. And even if you claim you aren't trying to justify killing civilians your posts strongly come across that way and I really have trouble believing you care about any of the Palestinian civilian deaths outside of it being "bad PR".

The war is between Israel and Hamas. Regardless of how you feel regarding Israels current government, which definitely has its share of racists, surely it can be understood that Israeli citizens have the right to live their lives free from the threat of Hamas, just as Palestinian civilians should also be free from Hamas and Israeli occupation?

Both things can be true, even if you think the price to eliminate Hamas is too steep, and want justice for the civilians killed during the last five months and beyond.
