It's still over a month until the end of the year, but I figured I'd throw this out there now. I'm looking for someone else who might be interested in handling the video game challenge in the future. I've made the topics for four years now and, like tazzy the original creator before me, I'd like to step aside.

It isn't a whole lot of work. Now that the purge rate has increased and removed the need for constant bumping all it really takes is making a new spreadsheet at the start of the year and posting the topic. I left decisions like altering the challenges to what other people suggested for the most part, but whoever takes over can run it how they see fit.

There are only a few days left in the year and at this point I won't make any changes unless they're seconded by a few people. I'm basically a Max-type and the best friend I've ever had was like a less traumatized Chloe, so yeah I'd probably be good friends with her.

I just can't see how someone can watch the magical scene of her and Max in the pool and not think Chloe is the best friend a person could ever have.

I really don't understand how Chloe relates to all of those straight-up villains KokoroAkechi is listing. I mean, Hisoka is a perverted murderer.

Then again, I also don't understand how Chloe isn't likable. Is she abrasive? Sure, she's gone through some shit in her life that she's still working through. That's what makes her a fascinating character imho. Fiction would be boring if everyone needed to be an angel like Kate in order to be likable. For me, these traits would only detract from likability if they have no logical backing or if they're all a character has (A certain character turning into a cartoon villain in Ep5 of LiS was shit, for example, because it was over-the-top and made no sense). Chloe getting angry over Max taking a phone call makes sense because Max ghosting her is still an open wound, so that's fine with me.

There's also a whole lot more to Chloe than those traits. Episode One of LiS is actually a great example of this once she and Max reunite. Surly Chloe is angry Max never contacted her, sad about Rachel, wants to be alone... and then she finds the photo that shows Max saved her life earlier that day. It's like a switch gets thrown, all that other stuff gets thrown to the side, and she's back to being a best friend again. The fun dancing antics gets cut off pretty quick by David, but still! Chloe can be a great friend and she shows that over and over (Ep2 train track convo, Ep3 pool adventure, and so on).

Chloe is also the friend you want with you when shit gets real. Sometimes you want to go out and have a nice cup of tea with a person like Kate. If you suspect your father is cheating on your mother and you want backup, though, that's when you want a Chloe. Ep1 of BtS was so great in how it started the Chloe/Rachel relationship (it characterized Rachel amazingly with her being manipulative towards Chloe to get her support, but we're talking about Chloe here). This era of Chloe should be her at her most angsty with David entering her life and no Max, but Rachel instantly pierces that just by relating to her on her level. Hey Chloe, want to skip school? Fuck yeah Chloe wants to skip school. There was also that great moment in Ep4 of LiS where Nathan catches her and Max snooping around his dorm. This is a guy who killed Chloe a few days ago in an alternate timeline, and she knows it. He's got a gun. She backs away alongside Max for the first few seconds, scared. When Nathan actually starts moving towards Max, though? Oh no you don't, Chloe charges forward and pushes him back until Warren shows up to help.

So, in conclusion, Chloe is the best character ever and super likable.

I think BtS is equal to LiS (meaning they're both tied for being the best game ever) and Chloe is the best character ever, so I like this topic!

BtS really impressed me with how well the new dev understood her character. Minor Ep1 spoilers The SMASH scene at the junkyard was amazing. Lesser writers would've had Chloe just break down and cry after Rachel left, but that isn't how Chloe processes things. She lashes out and breaks things. It was great.

Looks like the topic just barely won't last the whole year so I'll make a new one once it fills up.

Since I always ask around this time, does anyone have opinions about changing the challenges for next year? My only real idea was to add a 'Mechanics' section that involved gameplay elements that aren't necessarily tied to genre ('Beat a game that uses a lives system', for example, could cover a game like Mega Man or a bullet hell arcade type game). We could merge or cut a few of the less popular challenges to make room if people think this has potential and have other ideas for game mechanics. Stuff like custom character creators would cover stuff like Mass Effect and Dark Souls, I dunno.

Otherwise, share your own ideas! Including about challenges you wouldn't mind seeing cut just in case there are good ideas.

I'll copy any useful discussion posts to the new topic so feel free to fill this one up.

Coming back was worth it to help Lightning finally get her win. Congrats to the best Final Fantasy character and all of her fans who made this happen.

I don't want to make promises about future years (especially after missing 79% of this year), but if I do return, I'd like to help Garnet get a real run. I split my saves between her and Lightning Justice this year and she kinda got shafted. Someone also mentioned a YRP run once Yuna gets back in, and I love that idea. Even if I skip next year I might return just for that! Y, R, P, in position. It's showtime girls!

Also that "Year of XIII" thing is spoken about as if everyone was on board and clearly, that wasn't really the case. It was so heavy handed and in your face to the point it was severely grating. Even while it was happening I was wondering why Lightning's fanbase would push Fang into a victory when it could damage Lightning's chances of winning herself in the near future.

I finished the first two seasons of Chihayafuru. Now I'm going to wait a bit before starting the third season because if I catch up in the middle of an intense match it'll drive me crazy.

Before my spoilered comments, I'll just say that it was really good! The karuta games were always intense, and I liked all of the major characters (and all of the side characters except Yumin, who thankfully wasn't in it very much). There were a few small things that annoyed me, mostly about karuta intricacies. Still, those were all minor issues. Overall, it was a great anime.

The anime mostly made karuta a lot of fun to watch, but there are a few aspects of it I'm not a fan of. Yumin represented a lamer side to it with her constant challenges. I basically never enjoyed it when that mechanic came up. Thankfully, Chihaya has no knack for contesting so it never happened often. I also didn't like the humongous advantage that came from the players being familiar with the reader. Rion gave Chihaya trouble when literally her grandmother was reading, then she got destroyed by Taichi when someone else was reading. They acted like the reader infusing emotion into the words was a mark of quality, but IMHO it's just unfair. They should have a text-to-voice program randomly read these things and get the biased human readers out of karuta.

As for the characters, it was great watching them all grow, both individually and as a team. The three winning the individual tournaments at the end was nice to see because I knew the long road all of them had taken to get there.

I spoke about the love triangle earlier and I didn't have an opinion then, but this has changed. Both Taichi and Arata are great guys, so initially I was fine with either one. However, the introduction of Hanano and an early conversation with Taichi was what changed it for me. Taichi said he wanted to choose who he devoted himself to (or something, I forget the exact line). So he likes Chihaya, and Arata probably liked Chihaya because otherwise there's no actual conflict. However, it seems pretty clear that Chihaya likes Arata. She's chosen to devote herself to him. Sorry Taichi, you lose by your own rules. Team Arata all the way!
