On the one hand, there were a lot of great moments to choose from and it was probably the hardest category for me to narrow down.

On the other hand I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a huge tie for first there because everyone picked different moments.

Since I'm not going to make an effort to finish anything else from this season any time soon, I may as well post a ranking of what I actually did keep up with. I watched an episode or two of everything, and there were a few potential 6/10s or 5/10s I didn't finish (mostly new seasons in stuff I'd already ranked there, like Index and Golden Kamuy) but most of it was looking like it would land in the 1 to 3/10 range. Every time I looked at that big list of trash I needed to watch, it made my not want to watch any anime at all. Maybe a break and a fresh season will rejuvenate me. After all, I hope to go back and slowly finish them all someday for my goal of completing 100 2018 anime! Anyway:

Iroduku: The World in Colors (10/10)
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (9/10)
Zombie Land Saga (7/10)
The Girl in Twilight (7/10)
UzaMaid (7/10)
Anima Yell! (7/10)
Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood (7/10)
Goblin Slayer (6/10)
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (5/10)
Release the Spyce (4/10)
RErideD (4/10)

Iroduku: The World in Colors completed, and it was awesome. This anime appealed to me in a lot of ways, with excellent characters, a magical tone, and nostalgic feelings. It was also beautifully put-together, both visually and emotionally. Several sequences in particular are still sticking with me, even now. There were a few things I wanted it to do with the story that it wound up not doing, which impacted my enjoyment of the finale a bit (though let me be clear, the final episode was still amazing, this just didn't break into my top 5 of all time like I thought it had the potential to). Iroduku is still easily my favorite anime of the season and one of the best of the year.

Anyway, I'm going to get real busy again soon so I'm probably going to (at least temporarily) drop a lot of junk from this season that I wound up not finishing (and some probably-not-junk like Bloom Into You that I never made time for because the first episode was super meh). Just a heads up in case anyone was waiting anxiously for my opinion on the hit anime Conception!

Yeah, Violet Evergarden was great when Violet was a character in someone else's story. It's too bad they couldn't have done the whole show about that instead of all the (in my opinion) awful Violet-focused episodes. The setting is kind of neat but Violet makes absolutely no sense within it.

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai completed. This was an awesome anime, definitely one of the best of the year (though not the best of the season imho). There were a few points where I wanted arcs to be longer just so that things could be better paced, but it's pretty high praise to say that the worst thing about this anime was that there wasn't more of it. Otherwise I enjoyed the individual stories, the chemistry between the characters, and how it all came together.

The thing that made it super stupid was that he needed her to either die or fall into a coma from falling a few steps, which certainly isn't a guarantee. If she just broke her hip and started screaming he would've been even more screwed than before. There's absolutely no reason they couldn't have just had the scene take place at a much larger staircase.

I still don't understand the appeal of those movies, I thought they had good music and the occasional good action scene but were otherwise boring nonsense at best. Anima Yell finished today. It didn't really break any new ground as a cute girl anime (in fact, in a lot of ways this was just an idol anime except without the singing). Still, I found it competent and enjoyable. Kohane was a fun high-energy, cheerful character who played off the others well, and the other characters had their own quirks that made them good too. The cheerleading was always energetic and uplifting. There were also a lot of great comedy moments. Overall, just a solid cute girls doing cute things anime.

My struggle with my eternal backlog continues with Frankenstein Family, another list filler anime from earlier this year. The best way I can describe this is shockingly incompetent. Like, everything they could have possibly done wrong, they got wrong, yet never in a way that it became 'so bad it's good'. It wasn't offensively bad or anything, just... nothing. Poor animation, poor writing, and the themes kept changing every other episode (humans will never accept monsters, or maybe they will! Total conformity is the only way to live, but also be yourself!). In the very first episode the monster family went to a restaurant in full monster form and made a huge spectacle of themselves. Then later episodes had a bunch of drama about how they absolutely couldn't let anyone know they were monsters. All the characters were boring. The season ended on a gigantic cliffhanger, which is bad, but I care so little that I don't even want to see it resolved, which is worse.

One nice thing I'll say is that, with a minute-long 'previously on' segment (because this crappy slice-of-life monster anime apparently had such a deep plot that I needed to get caught up on it every episode), a minute and a half on the opening, and half of each episode consisting of real life segments with the voice actors talking to each other about nothing, there was only ten minutes of actual content in each episode. By skipping all the junk, this at least didn't take very long to suffer through.

Release the Spyce completed. This had a lot of potential early on but it fell apart hard as it went on. I like Princess Principal a lot, and I'd describe that as a serious spy anime. Spyce had the potential to be a great cute girls spy show, kind of the opposite end of the spectrum, and for awhile it was a lot of fun and felt like it would be exactly that. Sadly, they tried to do too many things at once, occasionally getting super serious. There are anime that can pull off divergent tones and still be good. Spyce, however, only had the fun and serious tones clash, to the detriment of both. It didn't help that a lot of the serious aspects were steeped in obvious cliches, and both awful execution and writing. The last few episodes were particularly terrible. What a disappointment.

Two more anime finished today.

Uzamaid was great, which is a lot better than its premise makes it sound! There are a lot of ways the pedophile maid aspect could have been sickening instead of hilarious, but I felt they managed to keep from going too far. Tsubame never felt like an actual threat to Misha, merely an annoyance, and that meant I could just enjoy the funny antics without worry. I liked the dynamic between those two a lot, and side characters like Yasuhiro and Misha's school friends were great (Morikawa was the best, I loved that she had her own theme song whenever she showed up). I wasn't a huge fan of Midori though, and especially not the prominence she received. Several episodes made her seem like the secondary main character, pushing Tsubame into third, and while her masochism sometimes resulted in funny jokes at times it felt like it was just the same joke over and over again. I also wasn't a fan of the drama certain episodes revolved around, I wanted cute fun! Still, UzaMaid was solid most of the time so I don't want to complain about it too much.

Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood was a cute show. Akari and Sophie were great, with Sophie being an otaku vampire and Akari having so many quirks (doll obsession, Sophie obsession...) that she sometimes freaked out even her vampire roommate. I didn't mind Hinata either, though her character trait of having a crush on Akari was a little one-note. Ellie... she would have worked better as a side character on the level of Hinata but once she arrived she practically became the third main character. I mostly felt that she disrupted the fun dynamic between Akari and Sophie, I swear so many fun scenes were interrupted in the middle by Ellie walking in and being like 'Hey I'm here too!' and then she'd proceed to add very little. Still, that's a fairly minor complaint. The show was always fun, exploring the daily pitfalls of vampire life in cute and hilarious ways.

I finished Zombie Land Saga too so I may as well post an idol fan's perspective! I thought this was an excellent anime! I never weighed in on the 'it's not just an idol anime' conversation, but mostly because I'm not sure I understand what that was arguing in the first place. It's a hilarious anime (Tae was the standout but everyone was great), a heartfelt anime when it wants to be, and it's an awesome anime... but none of that is incompatible with it also being an idol anime. Idol super-haters probably shouldn't watch ZLS because it likely won't change your opinion on the genre, but anyone who feels a bit more neutral should check it out.

Anyway, I enjoyed ZLS a lot. The characters who needed it were fleshed out over the course of the story (and the ones who weren't were always great regardless). The musical aspect was a lot of fun. The CGI dancing may not have been the best but it was nowhere near the worst I've seen either. Almost every single joke landed, but it was also capable of making me feel heartfelt emotions when it wanted to. Overall ZLS was just a solid anime.

Lastly, while I would be excited for a potential second season, I'm not seeing why there's a real need for one. It wasn't like there was some big plot thread that needs to be wrapped up, this stands perfectly fine on its own imho

I basically always like this and am confused when people call it a negative for something.

I almost always like it too but I feel like it's fair to criticize when it goes overboard into the point of absurdity. One character having a fatal disease can make me cry if it's done right. One character having a fatal disease in a world where every other character also has the worst luck in the world and it can feel silly instead of sad.

Did anyone watch Dragon Pilot?

It was one of the fifteen anime I recommended in those two posts no one read!

As for Violet Evergarden, there were three or so episodes that I liked (they were 100% emotionally manipulative heartstring pulling, but I'm a sucker for that so if you are too it might be worth checking out). Those high points were higher than anything in Dragon Pilot, which was more consistently 'good'. The rest of VE was terrible low points, though. The character of Violet is boring and makes no sense within the context of the setting, which really ruins everything to do with her story if you spend more than a minute thinking about it. I know some people who managed to look past them, to be fair, but I couldn't.

I finished RErideD, and it honestly wasn't as bad as its low MAL score made me fear it would be. It wasn't good either, mind you, but it wasn't bad. Yuri was the only character that I really cared about (and even her only barely, she just felt the most like a real person), but all the rest of the main cast were at least inoffensive. The bad future setting didn't make a whole lot of sense, somehow being both a functioning society and an apocalyptic wasteland depending on the needs of the scene. There were a few neat set-pieces where they fought robots, though, so that was nice I guess. As for the plot itself... it had a few good ideas that I thought might come together in the end, but sadly the boatloads of nonsense that surrounded those good ideas kept them from living up to their potential. To me, a good time travel story makes you go 'whoa cool' at the end when all the pieces come together and RErideD... didn't do that. Ah well.

I think what salvaged my opinion of this more than anything is that I love time travel stories in general, even if they suck. This may have been a poorly written mess, but those rare moments where I (incorrectly) thought I saw something intelligent were still worth watching for, at least for me. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else, though.

I finally finished Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation from last season and I need to rant about it a little. At first I assumed it would be mediocre list filler, but then the first episode was legitimately one of the worst of the entire year, exploring a shockingly harrowing theme in the most braindead, childish way to the point where it became offensive (I'll tag the spoilers but really who gives a shit about this anime a girl was a huge asshole and basically killed her friend. Then the friend's spirit was sent to hell for all eternity while the girl got off scot free, happy that her friend's ghost was no longer bothering her, and it pissed me off. I figured it was just a tonal clash, a non-serious show tried to tackle a serious subject and fumbled it super hard. It rose to the level of merely being a bad anime after that, at least until I fell behind. Now that I've come back to it... man, it managed to sink to new depths towards the end there. This anime had no idea what it wanted to be, it kept bringing up really serious things and approaching them like it was a literal kids show. The response to a pointless rape to show how evil someone is isn't 'that nasty person was so mean to you', fuck you Muhyo and Roji.

Even beyond those aspects, it was a bad anime. The fights were all over in one move whenever Muhyo read from his book. They kept trying to build tension by having the ghost move closer and Muhyo just kind of stands there grinning and oh no will he be able to read from the book in time... just read from the fucking book you dumb kid. The bad guys were all cartoonishly evil in the most lazy, despicable ways. This bounced around between 2/10 and 3/10 for awhile but it finally settled at 1/10 as one of the worst anime I've ever finished.

There are a lot of OPs and EDs that I like so it's always tough for me to pick. Iroduku OP is my favorite at the moment but that's probably recency bias. Yuru Camp's OP has stuck with me all year too since it did a great job setting up the tone of the show for me.

I just finished Hakumei and Mikochi, which I'd skipped when it aired earlier this year but came back to for my goal of completing one hundred anime from 2018. I'm glad I gave it a chance too because this was a nice show. The animation was nothing fancy and the characters were fairly basic, but it was always relaxing. I'm also a fan of all the little details that went into tiny people living in a comparatively massive forest, like how fixing a wall composed of a few small rocks was a huge construction project for them. H&M would have been completely outshone by Laid-Back Camp had I watched it when it aired, but it still had a fun, relaxing style of its own.

It's time for shows from this season to start finishing, and the first one I completed was The Girl in Twilight since I got caught up on it this weekend and enjoyed it enough to stay up late and catch the final episode right when it came out. I'll spoil the basic premise below but it's nothing you wouldn't know from watching episode one, I'm just mentioning that as a warning in case anyone is planning to watch it and wants to go in blind to be pleasantly surprised like I was.

Anyway, there were a lot of elements about this that appealed to me. I liked all of the characters, particularly Asuka. I'm sure a lot of people would find her annoying but I love high-energy cheerful types like her, and I liked the depth her backstory reached. The other characters grew on me a lot over the course of the story, too. I also love parallel worlds as a concept since they open up a lot of options for exploring characters in different situations, and this anime certainly explored some unique situations! The action scenes were also consistently impressive too, I enjoyed the use of CGI in them.

However, The Girl in Twilight wasn't perfect. I enjoyed every single one of the adventures individually, but I feel like there was something missing for the overall whole to really come together into something special. I'm not asking for scientific technobabble about the parallel worlds, but the characters took everything in stride a bit too much, and several things I wanted to see addressed never were. Still, that's a minor complaint, and is mostly just a fancy way of saying that they shot for a different tone than the more serious one I would have preferred. The Girl in Twilight was still a fun anime with a lot of nice moments, and I'm glad I watched it.

Aw, this is sad. I stopped watching their stuff in early 2016 but I was a pretty major fan before that. They were the ones who introduced me to Life is Strange, my favorite game. The business relationship falling apart bothers me less than hearing that they aren't friends anymore, too. What I loved about them was that they all seemed so real with how close they were, like all the shit-talking and inside jokes reminded me of my own friends.

Yes, yes I would.

I do want to make it clear that I'm not making light of that bit from episode 8 it's just, if they were shooting for drama and not comedy at all, they'd have had her commit suicide. Instead her heart just explodes or something.

Also how can a show with the legendary Tae not be considered a comedy? She's always hilarious.

The drama and character-building in ZLS is all heavily influenced by the comedy though. Episode 8 was great and genuinely emotional but it still featured Lily literally dying because she grew a single facial hair. That isn't exactly pure drama..

But a world where everyone likes the same things as me is also a world where we had so many awesome discussions about Katana Maidens and right now we'd all be freaking out over Iroduku. I don't care if it would be a boring place, I want to live in that world.

GranzonEx posted...
watch Wake Up Girls!

I will someday! My 600 episode backlog needs to be pared down a little bit more first (oh god how did I let it get this bad)

Anyway, idol music is great. I still go back and watch Love Live songs every so often.

I'd try to defend idol anime, but I have Love Live Sunshine in my top ten. Even Music Girls, the lowest-budget, mediocre idol anime I've seen so far, was still worth watching. I'm slowly watching Idol Incidents and having fun with it too, and it has a 5.71 on MAL! I seem to like even the idol anime that other idol fans dislike so there's a good chance that I'm just a crazy person. My opinion in this discussion won't count for much!

I can see someone not liking ZLS if they think it plays the idol aspects too straight or something, but it's still a really funny anime. It's absolutely a comedy

Huh, I thought Hinamatsuri was one of my less controversial picks. I wonder where all the people who liked it are.

I assume the three are Hinamatsuri, Revue Starlight, and Iroduku.

Which is fine, everyone has different tastes! I hated a few of the favorites of others this year (FranXX, HaneBADo) and thought another big favorite was mostly meh (Devilman).

Cool, thanks voltch. I'll hurry up and watch a few thing I think I'll like then (as opposed to catching up to junk I don't like but want to finish).

Since voting is happening soon, if anyone wants some last minute ideas for shows from 2018 to watch, these would be my recommendations!

A.I.C.O.: Incarnation
A Place Further than the Universe
Hinamatsuri
Iroduku: The World in Colors
Laid-Back Camp
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
Revue Starlight

Episode 11 of Iroduku was so good, god damn. I shouldn't have caught up on it when I did, I want it to be over now so that I can watch the rest right away.

I'm a sucker for bittersweet heartstring pulling, at least when it's done right. Like, there's a sweet spot between too sappy for me to care and too happy to make me sad. Iroduku is looking like it'll hit that perfect balance. That ending of the episode where they communicated through magic paper planes and lights, and then they met and Hitomi ran over to hug him without even hesitating, then that shot of the almost-new-moon in the background showing how little time they have left... wow. Anime moment of the year for me, I kept watching that sequence over and over. I hope the last two episodes don't drop the ball somehow.
