Iceman's Match of the Week

Monster Express (Masato Yoshino and Shachihoko BOY) vs Jimmyz (Jimmy Susumu and Jimmy Kagetora)
Dragon Gate
Gate of Passion - April 9, 2015
Match Link: https://vimeo.com/125997656

My favorite Dragongate unit of all time defending their newly-one Twin Gate titles against my second favorite. The result is quite possibly the best 2v2 match to ever take place in the Toryumon system, and while thats a hell of a big statement, its not at all unfounded.

Yoshino and Susumu each have a lot of fans that would make the claim theyre the best wrestler in company history, and Kagetora is well known as a guy who will literally always step up and deliver in the big matches even if he takes it a little easy when hes lower on the card. They each turn in some of the best performances of their career here. Yoshino is his fiery and blindingly fast self from the opening minutes on, bringing all his best impactful stuff and defiantly refusing to ever stay down no matter what the Jimmyz throw at him. Kagetora is the picture of smoothness, and he gets the chance to show off the full breadth of what is probably the coolest moveset in modern wrestling. Susumu puts in an absolutely masterful selling performance after his arm gets worked over at the beginning - he can still use it to throw his onslaught of lariats, but their effectiveness is decreased just enough that his opponents can survive one or two more than they normally could, and hell, he even remembers to wince when high-fiving his partner once. Thats the exact kind of selling I love in wrestling; if other pro athletes can compete with heavily damaged and legit broken limbs, why do some people think wrestlers have to act like amputees after a couple of arm wringers?

But I digress. Its no surprise that those three names are awesome. But by the end of the match, its the unassuming underdog in Shachihoko BOY that turns out to be the biggest star for one night only. See, this was pretty much the peak of his rollercoaster career. There were ups and downs all over the place for him, especially around this time period (and sometimes even in the same match), and most of the ups came as a result of him being Yoshinos best friend. Still, he was the designated pin eater for Monster Express and had previously only been a Triangle Gate champ, so the fact that he and Yoshino managed to win these titles in the first place was a bit of a shock.

The challengers were odds-on favorites heading into this match, and all of that leads to the incredible closing sequence. Shachis been isolated, taking every finisher in the Jimmyz book, but Yoshino manages to just barely save the day every time as the crowd goes absolutely bonkers around him. He cant keep it up forever, though, and eventually the underdog has to dig down as deep as he can to try and pull out the miracle. He knows this is probably the only time hell ever get to be a Twin Gate champion, and he desperately wants to hold onto that. But more importantly, Monster Express was a unit explicitly founded on the values of fighting with everything you had for your friends, and hes determined not to let down his best pal.

Does he succeed? Guess youll have to watch to find out.

Really, this match would have felt right at home in the last topics theme, but considering theres a fair argument to be had that its not quite even the best Dragongate match from 2015, I elected to steer clear of it there for my own self-imposed dumb logic.

The #4 song (that only barely fell out of the top 10 once after the first revision) and #3 average overall? I'll definitely take that.

It's kinda funny, actually - Runaway Train was the last song I decided to nominate because I was debating with myself over whether you'd enjoy any Avantasia at all. Makes sense, though. They're certainly very theatrical and I can see how a lot of themes would appeal to you.

I'd recommend more of their stuff to you, but I honestly have no real idea what else from their catalogue you'd really gravitate toward. The Scarecrow is my favorite album of theirs and its title track my favorite of their songs (I guess you could consider that an indirect soft recommendation), but I could just as easily see you loving Angel of Babylon or Moonglow. With as much as you liked my offering for them in this topic, though, I'd imagine you could find at least one or two songs on any of their albums that you enjoy. They do a pretty good job keeping things diverse while maintaining their overall sound.

I always love your song rankings. Great topic. Looking forward to seeing what you think about some of my extra recs.

Never participated in this topic before, but I'm determined to play more games this year than I have been recently, so hopefully this'll be a little extra motivation boost.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade (GBA)
The Good:
The first half of this game has some really fantastic map design. Chapters 4, 7, and 11A are among the best in the series, and most of the others have at least some kind of interesting gimmick or layout. Enemies are just strong enough to make sure you generally have to think about what you're doing.

Really underrated cast. It's a shame supports are so obnoxious to get in the GBA FE games, because they hide some of the best in the series here.

Unit balance is, I think, pretty good. You've got your standard amount of useless characters, including maybe the worst one in the series in Wendy, but there's a pretty decent number of decent options without a whole lot of overpowered ones. Even Marcus and Jerrot fall off pretty early on. Roy not promoting until the very end is something everyone can agree sucks, but I do like that he doesn't just steamroll the game like some lords in the series do. It's good for some variety.

I generally like the narrative and lore, although there were definitely places it could've been more fleshed out, especially with some extra scenes from the actual perspective of the characters as opposed to that thing FE does where the map of the world gets shown and a faceless narrator just describes what's been happening.

The Bad:
Most of FE6's problems, I think, can be boiled down to calling it a Strategy Guide Game. Ambush reinforcements, annoying Gaiden requirements (that are needed to even experience the full game) and character recruitments, dumb route split mechanics. None of these are that troublesome to deal with if you know about them, but I'm not gonna sit here and claim that's good game design.

The map design gradually gets worse as the game goes on, too. All the interesting side objectives and strategic enemy placement kinda goes out the window in favor of siege tomes and status staves by the end. FE is at its best when it presents an effective puzzle to solve - things like that just make you feel like you're trying to put together a puzzle where every once in a while someone will just remove a few of the pieces you've placed and throw them across the room. It's also well known for having the lamest final chapter and final boss in the series, and that reputation is richly deserved.

Overall:
It's unfortunate how badly it fails to stick the landing, but I quite enjoyed this game overall. I'm in the process of finishing up Sacred Stones as well, and unless that game really just blows me away at the end, I think I'd be inclined to call Binding Blade my favorite GBA Fire Emblem. It doesn't touch the upper echelons of the series - there's too many early-franchise quality of life annoyances for that without many of the charming parts that let Genealogy make up for them - but it does slightly more right than wrong.

Endgame Team: Roy, Fae, Milady, Shin, Lilina, Geese, Perceval, Clarine (who unexpectedly became a dodgetank that ran over half the wyvern riders in Chapter 21 all by herself), Fir, and Lalum

Other notable contributors throughout the game: Deke, Rutger, Allen, Shanna, and Lance

Awesome! Wasn't sure I was quite gonna make it to the top 10.

I figured when I nominated Act IV that Bitter Suite IV/V was either gonna a huge hit or huge miss for you just because, as you says, it goes so hard at the corrupt priest angle that it's completely audacious in every way. This is another TDH song that's always a blast at concerts - the Pimp/Priest songs pretty much all are because of how bouncy they tend to be. He definitely has that cartoony, comic-book villain-y vibe nailed perfectly.

That lack of subtext that makes it so lovable means there's not a whole lot to say about it, but I do feel compelled to even further highlight the We can lead you to salvation with the right denomination line. It's such a wonderful piece of poetic writing that's just fun to sing along with, and that's without even considering the super clever triple entendre in there. The surface-level satire is obvious enough, but then you can also look at it from the perspective that the "salvation" being offered could just as easily be meant as an invitation to his brothel, or that it's a commentary on that well-traveled idea that pretty much every denomination of Christianity insists that theirs is the only true path, which is something that as a self-described Christian myself has always bothered me about churches as institutions and always will.

Nice to see If All Goes Well took such a big jump, especially since a big drop preceded it! It's pretty interesting to see that, actually, because there's been a pattern I've gone through many, many times with Dear Hunter songs (and the band as a whole, I guess), including with my first exposure to them with A Night on the Town:

First listen: "Huh, this is pretty good stuff and there's some interesting ideas in there, but it's not really clicking with me on a really deep level."
Second listen: "Oh, I didn't notice that before... Or that... Oh, damn, that's a really solid lyric... Man, what a nice harmony they got there."
Third listen: "Okay, I think I love this song."

And then it just keeps going from there. They're the only band I can think of that doesn't have a single song I've come to like less over time - it's all been upward trajectory. So I'm curious what would've happened if you had, you know, infinite free time and listened to every song five or ten times prior to ranking. Whether you'd have ended up having that same relationship with a lot of their stuff or if I'm just a weirdo.

Anyway, as far as the track itself goes, it's definitely a big-time earworm. TDH pulls out the call-and-response style of song every once and a while and pretty much nails it every time. It's also kind of notable in being the last song in the whole story where Hunter's ego is really out of control, and with that being such a big part of his character (i.e. why bad things tend to happen to him more times than not), it ends up being kind of memorable in that way. The character in If All Goes Well feels like a different man entirely from the one we see even a few songs later in Ouroboros and then the majority of Act V... Which I guess is another reason that it plays even better on re-listens and so forth.

Very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Runaway Train!

I do have to disagree with you somewhat - the crowd doesn't feel split so much as like - they don't like anyone here and it felt to me a bit like they were heckling both guys the entire match which is such a weird feel for a big fight.
It was kind of a thing around this later-2000s era of ROH for fans to show support more by jeering the other wrestler in the match than by explicitly cheering their chosen guy. I don't mind that sort of thing myself but I can certainly understand why it'd be a little off-putting.

Boot Camp Match
This is definitely a product of the times in both good and bad ways. There's a molten crowd and pretty much no wasted time or motion, and obviously those are things that are pretty much gonna be universally appreciated by wrestling fans. I really didn't mind the loaded boot stuff - they pulled it off well - and there were some nice visuals, especially once the blood came.

There's some little things that begin to annoy me when added up, though. The match feels like it reaches its peak, both in a vacuum and as the big payoff to a blood feud, somewhere around the middle. Towards the end we've got Sheik doing suplexes and such and it's very jarring after all the chair shots and choking and blood. Then there's the fact that the FCA part of the stipulation barely came into play at all, and even though I'm not a huge crowd brawling fan, I'm even less a fan of match gimmicks not being a huge part of the match, especially if it was such a focus of the build. And finally, for better or worse, I'm always gonna be someone who puts a lot of value on smoothness in my wrestling, and though both guys were better here than I generally find them, they have their upper limits. With Sheik in particular, there's times where it seems like you can literally see the gears turning in his head as he thinks his way from spot to spot.

This is too straightforward of a match for me to really have any more to say about it, especially considering how much Bidoof and Ed have already talked about it, so I guess I'll go ahead and bring the "week" to an end here. Liked it well enough, glad to have watched it, but even viewing it in the context of its era, I don't know if I'm quite as high on this match as the majority. Good pick, though. It's cool to have as a part of this project for the variety it brings. This week was fun for that.

The two other White Moth Black Butterfly songs I had in the running were The Serpent and Evelyn.

Just realized I forgot to comment on La Muerta, but I don't really have a lot to say about it anyway. Honestly, the lyrics aren't any clearer to me than they are to you. The main riff in the song is so, so sweet, though, and the rest of the instrument work accompanies it well. Plus, Arno Menses is probably one of my favorite male vocalists in all of music. Both Subsignal and Sieges Even have some amazing harmonies in their work.

Tightrope has a very special place in my heart for potentially being the first rock song I ever listened to. My parents had a fairly extensive vinyl collection when I was really young, A New World Record being among the albums in it. I can't remember for certain if that was the first non-country record they ever played for me, but it's one of only three possibilities and, since Tightrope is the first track off of it, there's a pretty good chance. Even aside from that, though, it's always been one of my favorite ELO songs. I remember being surprised to discover it wasn't one of their biggest hits, but it kinda made more sense as I got older and realized that I generally enjoyed their sort of second-tier hits (Sweet Talkin' Woman, Turn to Stone, and Showdown, to name a few others) a little more than their very tippy-top most well-known stuff. So groovy.

I definitely didn't see King of Swords going down before If All Goes Well coming. I figured it was a toss-up between that and Bitter Suite IV/V for your favorite Act IV offering from the beginning. I remember how high Number City was on your first ranking topic and expected this one to hit that same sort of weird poppy disco feeling. I imagine all the dead space at the end kinda hurts it, too. It's just such a fun song, though. Steadily climbed up my ranking of the album over the years. Comes out of nowhere after the very subdued Abandon and it's a fantastic concert closer. And it's a small thing, but I also love how incredibly perfect the title is given the meaning of the Tarot card it comes from.

Well, if nothing else, I seem to be really good at nominating songs that fall a bunch of places at the last second.

My thoughts on Tempest are pretty similar to yours. They even kind of apply to the rest of the album. There's a lot of really, really good stuff on there, but it kind of misses the x-factor that elevates it beyond "beautiful, atmospheric, emotional prog pop." I love beautiful, atmospheric, emotional prog pop, but there's quite a bit of it out there and even the best examples of it like Atone are gonna have a certain ceiling to it, I think.

I almost nominated a couple of the duets from that album instead. Wonder how you would've liked those considering your thoughts on Lighthouse, them being somewhat similar genres and all.

Definitely expected The Line to go a little bit further considering how much you do seem to enjoy the whole dissociative aspect of Act IV's story, but it's such a mellow song in a lot of ways that I know it doesn't lend itself to being particularly memorable. I do agree that the vocals are much different on that track than they are on the rest of the album, too. "Spring had gone and clipped your wings/And the summer led astray/Autumn left a bitter sting/But the winter froze away" is a big lyrical highlight from the album to me.

And yeah, I was the one that nominated The Grocery. I can't believe you remember that with the amount of songs you've ranked and listened to over the past few years!

That whole-tier drop from Lighthouse sure is a bummer. Wonder if it'll turn out that my predicted placement for it would've been a little closer had it managed to keep one of its first two scores. I understand, though - it definitely does kinda feel like two completely different songs once the duet starts up. The whole Lighthouse album is pretty hauntingly beautiful from beginning to end; Post Scriptum is a gorgeous instrumental track if you're ever in the mood for that sort of thing and the two I Came Before the Water pieces feature some of my favorite vocals of the last five years. You'd probably enjoy them.

"Enchanting" is a great word for Mariusz Duda's voice. I'd like to give some recommendations for his main band Riverside as well since you liked him so much, but I can't say I'm much of a fan of theirs, so I'm afraid I don't have much to offer there.

Glad you liked Gutter Ballet so much. Savatage is one of the most underappreciated bands of all time in my opinion - they're more influential than a lot of people realize. They managed to go through a lot of different sounds over their history while always maintaining the general umbrella of blues-inspired metal, so I'd definitely expect you could find some things you really love in their catalogue. I'd recommend When the Crowds are Gone off the same Gutter Ballet album for sure, aaaaaand... Maybe The Hourglass off of The Wake of Magellan, off the top of my head.

Got one placement right out of three so far, that's fun. 7 songs left in the top 100, too! I'll take that anytime.

Vader/Takada
Awesome stuff. It's a pretty universally accepted truth in most combat sports that, when you have an instance of a smaller, quicker, more skilled guy taking on someone much bigger and stronger, it doesn't really matter how many good shots the first guy gets in. Eventually, he's gonna get caught.

Taking two, three, four blows to give one never sounds like much of a strategy on its face, but it's played so well here. Vader even starts to lean into it more as the match goes on - he stops even trying to block anything Takada throws at him and just accepts that it's fine to get hit a few times because there's no way his opponent won't leave himself open in the process. This was my first exposure to Takada and I came away very impressed - his strikes were always on point and his selling was fantastic. Granted, Vader was legit beating the tar out of him half the time, but still. The powerbomb spot was especially incredible. Watching Takada fight like death to get out of it is something that I wish we saw more of these days.

I also love that there was a point toward the end of the match where you could just tell it was a foregone conclusion that Vader had the match won. Even Takada seems to know it, but he's bound and determined to keep getting up until he literally just can't anymore. It's no longer about trying to squeeze out a win that's beyond his grasp, it's just the last gasp of a long-fighting champion focused only on making sure he goes out with every bit of spectacle that such a legendary reign deserved.

This isn't a style I'd be able to watch a ton of back-to-back, but in a small dose like this when two awesome wrestlers are pushing the medium to its limits, it's a ton of fun.

Alright, since I'm down to my last 10, I'll try and predict their eventual ranking.

King of Swords > Bitter Suite IV/V > Tempest > Runaway Train > Tightrope > Lighthouse > The Line > Gutter Ballet > La Muerta > If All Goes Well

This will probably be hopelessly wrong, heh.

Anyway, just some quick comments on my last few songs to go down, since that streak of losses I was predicting did indeed come.

Definitely bummed Is There Anybody Here? couldn't maintain that score from the first revision. I'm not surprised by what you liked and didn't like about it, though. Figured you'd love the lyrics and be less enthused by all the rest. I do have to say I love the ending instrumental, even if it maybe goes on a little long.

Squeaky Wheel is a track I've never had super strong feelings on one way or the other. I always find myself singing along to the last chorus, and they do some fun stuff with the key changes in it, but it's never been among my favorites from the album. I think the verses just feel a little clunky sometimes, relatively speaking.

As far as A Night on the Town goes... Well, you were close! It's actually my second-favorite song from Act IV behind the aforementioned Old Haunt. It also has some sentimental value because it was the first Dear Hunter song I ever heard. Oddly enough, it took me quite a few listens to really fall in love with it... Thing is, those listens all came in the course of a single day, which is kind of what triggered the realization that I must love it in the first place. And I used to have the same divide between my feelings on the first part of the song and everything after it, but that's mostly because it's a fanservice track in a lot of ways. The latter two-thirds are filled with so many reprises from the rest of the story that it probably is kind of impossible to really care about any of it if you don't have that context.

And finally, the lyrics. This is probably the most heavily analyzed and debated song among fans, but the popular theory is that the Fiance is actually nowhere in this song and in fact does not show up at all until Squeaky Wheel. It really is Ms. Leading that he has a romantic encounter with at the end - there's some reprises from Bitter Suites I, II, and III that confirm her reappearance as a bartender in one of the establishments that Hunter's half-brother's friends drag him to. He's drunk, yeah, but not so much that he doesn't recognize "that subtle smile that did [him] in" before. He still hasn't really forgiven her for the falling out they had back in Act II, though, which is what triggers the feelings in ITAH and really ramps up all the disassociation. But the meeting does jumpstart their eventual rekindling at the end of the album.

Waves is another one I don't have many thoughts on. Super beautiful, as you said, and I always love listening to it (especially because Old Haunt leads into it so perfectly), but it's certainly the most accessible song on the album, intentionally so. "The water rushed up from the boards below, so I started slickin' my hair with the kerosene" has always been a favorite line of mine, though.

Wait is a song that hits me hardest in the context of Ms. Leading, who I really love as a character. It's also cool because it's arguably the first song in the entire story that has some actual positive growth for Hunter, considering he makes the mature choice to recognize that what he did to Ms. Leading back when was worse than what she did to him, leading to their reconciliation. It'd be a happy ending if not for the fact it's all complicated by the public relationship he has to maintain with the Fiance for political purposes, but instead it leads all the insane stuff that happens by the end of Act V. I won't go into that here because, spoiler alert, I'll probably nominate that album if you do this ranking again, but the fact that the song ended up being way more important to the narrative than anyone ever figured gives it an sort of cool poignant feeling that elevates it from how I use to think of it.

Wow. That was more than I figured I'd be writing tonight. I really get carried away talking about the Acts.

Those aren't sports; they're leagues.
This. And it kinda changes the answer.

I slightly prefer basketball over hockey in a vacuum, but the NHL is considerably more entertaining than the NBA.

Good thing it's quality and also quantity. ;)
I'm speaking for the Moon design specifically. Obviously the entire game as a whole is extremely well-designed, as are a majority of the Moons themselves, but...

Yeah like whats worse, 100 good stars and 20 bad, or 800 good moons and 80 bad?
I would say the latter is worse for me personally, because I tend to lean more as a completionist for most games I play than not, and there can be too much of a good thing. Eventually (and I'm speaking as someone who got a LOT of Moons in SMO), getting rewarded for almost every little thing I do stops feeling rewarding. I wouldn't describe the feeling as "overwhelming" myself, but I do understand what's probably meant by that.

Again, we're talking about a game that I'd happily call a 7.5 or 8/10 anyway and that I freely recognize is flawed almost entirely as it pertains to my own tastes and preferences as a gamer more so than anything else.

Yeah, the quantity-over-quality design is the reason I'm not as high on Odyssey as most are. Good but not great game IMO.

Oh, I'll take a Taichi match over a SANADA match any day. But man, Taichi's control periods just make me lose interest in his matches every single time. Definition of a guy to me that needs the right opponent to actually have an entertaining match, because otherwise I'll just completely zone out in the middle of the match when he's working over his opponent and not being the least bit charismatic about it.
