So I tend to like cartoons of all sorts and I'd heard some good things so I decided to try this out. I probably won't post a ton about each episode and I may only watch one or two a week so this might be a while, but here we go.

Episode 1 - Tourist Trapped

Pretty strong introduction, I tend to always feel a little uncertain going into one of those "for kids but also for adults cuz it's awesome show" that I was more in the adult agegroup when it came out, but this one is worth it. That was funny. Mabel is awesome, basically everything she said was hilarious. Loved that montage of weird pickupline attempts, the whole leafblower scene (and how after the flashback of her getting a leafblower stuck to her face ended she said "That was fun") and "Grappling gun!" just killed me.

Did not expect giant gnome monster, even though I'd seen the gnome puking rainbows GIF. lol stack of gnomes in a trenchcoat, and the zombie fakeout had me going. "Gruncle" seems nicely mysterious, so excited to see where this goes and what the book has to say about the Mysteries of Gravity falls.

Anyway yeah so far Mabel is the standout, but I have hopes their uncle is going to be the fun kind of weird too. Drippy is allright.

Episode 2 - "The Legend of the Gobblewonker"

So in this episode Grunkle Stan wants to take Mabel and Dipper (It turns out his name isn't Dippy as I misremembered previously) on a fishing trip, but they end up searching for the Gobblewonker, a Nessie styled lake monster a crazy hillbilly guy was yelling about instead with Zeus, who as far as I can figure is some guy who works at their uncle's mystery shack or whatever he called it. Bonus points for the hillbilly's son disciplining him with a spray bottle of water like he was a cat.

Mabel is full time crazy. It's wild. I loved her fantasies with the human sized hamster ball "I'm human sized!" love those Mabel one liners, although she was almost too wacky in the first half, ha ha. Also liked the end credits pelican reprise. Other great jokes; the beavers and their hilarious subtitles, "We're still beavers" and "If it makes you feel any better, I got a lot of pictures of the beavers" as they were fleeing the sea monster. "Why would that make me feel better?!" Also I kind of like how in the first shot one of the beavers just casually slipped off the fake lake monster into the water like some kind of idiot beaver; it just sort of tipped over and fell in with no reaction.

I called the last camera under his hat being the last one in a key moment (love all the random shots of throwing cameras overboard for no reason and Mabel blackmailing him to be co-captain) but I didn't predict the monster would be a robot; then once it was I predicted it would be the hillbilly. But then I didn't predict him to go full mad scientist hillbilly. I had no idea I needed that in my life.

I was a little concerned some of the jokes heading onto the island might be trying too hard, but by the time their beaver laden ship was fleeing, well it had me again.

Also I must be getting old because I already felt kind of sorry for Grunkle Stan having his nephews not care about hanging out with him even before feeling sorry for him was explicitly part of the plot; the joke about his new ankle monitor was classic though. Decent episode, although it was a bit odd at first that they acted like they had been there a while, have to get used to that western cartoon thing where after the first episode they write them so you can watch them out of order more easily but not really placing stuff.

Though I liked the way the adventure book came back in to find the secret cave, wonder how much the ongoing mysteries will evolve? Right now it's funny, but I can't wait to see it become legendary.

That first hamster ball daydream might be legendary though. "You can look, but you can't touch".

That's good; I'd kind of gotten that vibe from the very very little I'd heard. I'm basically completely unspoiled.

Things I knew

1) people liked it
2) a lot
3) apparently get quite good in a "best kids cartoons for adults" way
4) rainbow barfing gnome

That's it

When the show was still airing I became borderline obsessed with watching episodes multiple times to search for clues/etc. There is a particular episode in season 1 that compelled me to revisit all previous episodes, you'll know it when you see it.

Hey I've watched the first... three, four? Episodes of this show like five times trying to get into it but it just didn't grab me. Is that a good representation of this show? If I didn't like it by then will I not like it? Like maybe what episode should I watch to really get into it?

Watch the first 4 episodes 1-3 for reasons, and 4 to establish Gideon and then watch episode 9 for reasons relating to 1-3.

If you aren't compelled by that, then this isn't the show for you.

I'd say it's representative but it sorta depends. If the humor and premise hasn't hit by then it definitely just isn't for you. If you are looking for something with a more overarching plot, it's there but you will probably be waiting too long for the payoff if you don't enjoy the episodic stuff.

If you didn't find those episodes funny or the characters likeable, then it's probably never going to grab you. I think the series starts off pretty strong, and while it does get even better later on, I don't consider it one of those shows that needs time to grow on you.

If you're still willing to give it a chance I'd say watch up to episode 9. Eps 9 and 5 I feel is the show really at its best and it was 9 specifically that hooked me. A lot of the cool long-running plotlines and serialization doesn't happen until season 2 so I don't think you'd be up to waiting that long, although I will say that's the point where the show goes from "really good" to "incredible".

Episode 3 - Headhunters

At first I was really excited when I saw that Zeus found a hidden room in the Mystery Shack (and I hope after the fight at the end the building says Mystery Hack for a while) but was a bit puzzled when it was wax dummies. Of course, later when they were cursed wax dummies (totally not magical like Mabel wondered clearly) that fit in more with the weird stuff theme. But I was kind of disappointed wax Grunkle Stan never started moving. My roomie still thinks someone killed wax Abraham Lincoln (wax John Wilkes Booth, Stan is looking at you)

I love how Mabel made the wax figure though, that was hilarious, and it turned out surprisingly good considering her previous ideas like waffle with beefy arms. Anyway, they definitely ruined some of the sympathy ol Grunkle Stan got last episode by focusing on what a con artist he was this one (And it's all thanks to one person; the wax statue, oh sure and you too Mabel). Liked seeing the crazy redneck in the audience again worrying about when the wax statues will take over and if they can survive; clearly this guy is more on the ball than we realized. The kids were pretty good at wax figure slaying, although I was kind of sad to see all of them except Larry King's head go before it was over.. >_>

Highlights; Ducktective saying "Don't patronize me" in the subtitles when the guy made a duck joke, "The murderer could be anyone!" - Dipper "Even us!" - Mabel. Also the running gag with Dipper being adorable and his sneezes sounding like a kitten even wax Sherlock Holmes commented on, Mabel saying "We have an axe! Ree! Ree! Ree!" when explaining to Grunkle Stan why they were going into town (And Zeus being all "this is an axe" earlier..) And their fake ids having glitter and googly eyes on them that Mabel shook up and down just killed me. Girl loves her glitter. "Excuse me, I have glitter in my eye!" - Grunkle Stan at the 'funeral'

Now they better have the surviving head of Larry King come back later, or I'm going to be disappointed. "Llamas are the greatest warriors" - as why Mabel should wear the llama sweater.

Episode 4 - The Hand That Rocks the Mabel

There's another con artist in town "Little" Gideon and his Tent of Telepathy; and Grunkle Stan is not a fan. They've apparently given him trouble since they came to town (Like stealing his parking spot with their big fancy bus, gasp) and he says anyone living under his roof won't go under theirs; Since tents don't have rooves, Mabel says they've found their loophole (showing a small loop of string and making a strange bwoop bwoop noise with a hilarious face, Mabel is amazing btw).

This guy really is ripping off Grunkle's ripoffs since he even has a 'psychic sack' just like Grunkle's 'mystery sack' ie a bag you drop your money in and has it magically disappear lol. They even have their own Soos! (nametag said Duece or Dueke, didn't go back to check). "Little Gideon" really is a little kid, and sings a song about being a psychic and everyone in the tent is into it including Mabel (who is amazing he can figure out her name despite it being written on her sweater. shoutout to all the funny Mabel sweaters) who I saw the name drop coming when he needed to rhyme "able". That little American flag pin on his lapel is a great con artist giveaway, and his whole deal felt a lot like one of those television evangelists, "step right up and be healed!"

The two end up becoming friends despite Dipper thinking the guy is a dip essentially, and after a creepy chat about how he feels like the king of the world up on the roof they're hanging out on, Gideon asks Mabel on a date. Dipper "Doesn't trust anyone whose hair is bigger than his head", which is a great line. Guy is already a ten on the creep o meter, even before the "are you sniffing my hair" line when they hug after Mabel super reluctantly accepts "one date".
Unsurprisingly, this leads to more and with people in town peer pressuring her "I'll die if you say no!" and a doctor who goes "I can say medically this is true!" she ends up having difficulty dumping him and actually getting stressed; the "Mabel is in sweater town" thing was cute, but Gideon really got on my bad side there; it was uncomfortable seeing the normally unflappable Mabel that upset tbh. Dipper stepped in, and it turned out Gideon's bolo tie he kept fingering had a magic telekinetic power, so he was beating up Dipper after he called him out using the reporter Toby to fake an interview about the weird stuff in town.

I loved the callback that Dipper apologized for "accusing him of murder last week". I'm really feeling that there's going to be more continuity in this series than the gag show exterior might have made me think if I hadn't known just enough to know there would be long running mysteries. On that note, I like how the detached S from the Mystery Shack sign is still sitting on the roof from last episode.

Mabel gets up the gumption to personally dump him, and ends up snatching away Gideon's bolo tie when she distracted him, "Of course not you're attacking my brother", that was an awesome trick, and then I liked it when she saved them both while flying in the air with the bolo's powers. It was really cathartic after seeing her squirm so much around this guy earlier in the episode, especially when she smashed it.

This was all very difficult for Grunkle Stan, who had first gotten angry and then was going to do a profit sharing scheme with the Tent, but hey, he managed to steal their weird clown painting when he left. Loved that "you got a word a day calendar or something" crack to Gideon when he was getting multisyllabically annoyed.

Mabel isn't worried about him because nobody will guess she's thinking of -8, nobody guesses negative numbers! But his threat that "This town has secrets you haven't begun to understand" may be true when it turns out he has mystery journal 2..and it made me realize Dipper's has a 3 on it. So who has journal 1? Niiiiiiice.

Hilarious bits: the show "Tiger Fist" about a tiger with a fist surgically attached, Mabel bedazzling her face "Blink Ow" "is that permanent?" "I'm unappreciated in my time" and how when Gabriel was at the door she basically coughed up a bedazzle hairball that bedazzled his suit. All the bedazzling jokes were great, including turning Soos into some kind of bedazzle disco ball in the end credits. Gideon arriving on a horse and keeping it in the restaurant was kind of funny as well, and Mabel describing his attention as "Quicksand, chubby quicksand". I also liked the warehouse with Gabriel brand merchandise that included a bat labeled as "blunt object" and for some reason, "Lamb shears".

Pit soda is a recurring prop in the series. I believe its peach flavored and each can had an actual pit in it.

And not every encoded message has far reaching implications, but there is a clue from the opening credits that provides instructions.

If you really want to have a crack at it I won't say any more, but you should probably start with the code from episode 1 since deciding it will at least easily show you are using the right method.

Here's a jumping off point for cipher solving. They do get more complicated as the series goes on:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesar_cipher

The ones in the in end credits are just bonus jokes. Some of the other hidden messages hidden throughout the series are huge clues though. You don't really have to worry about them, especially if you're going through the series now, but when it was airing fans had great fun solving them and piecing together the hints.

Episode 5 - The Inconveniencing

I had a longer gap than usual between watching and writing, so my bad if I get something wrong. What was the names of Wendy's friends? I forgot them all.

As for the title, a reference to The Shining perhaps? Probably, because like in the Shining we have a place haunted by ghosts. Finally we get an episode with more focus on Wendy, the main cast member (?) who has by far had the least screen time. When Grunkle Stan goes out (Apparently his last name is Pines and I wonder if that will be important later) he asks Wendy to watch the shack, but instead they all decide to slack off with her on the roof and throw pine cones at a bullseye she stuck on the totem pole out front. This establishes Wendy as kind of a troublemaker, and Dipper immediately gets a crush on her and wants to look cool. So he claims they're "13, technically teenagers" as an excuse to hang out with her when she goes to hang out with her friends.

After a rough start of being considered a kid and not getting along with the goth guy, Dipper helps them get into an abandoned convenience store. When it turns out to be haunted, he first loses street cred by getting freaked out and warning them, but then gains it again when he saves the day while the teens are passed out; and Wendy lies that he did it a cool way rather than with the "Lamby Dance", a hilarious dance preformed in a lamb suit that he was ashamed his parents had him do as a kid. Interesting childhood I guess.

Meanwhile Grunkle Stan won't get up to get the remote and ended up getting really into a victorian england over the top romance movie of some sort with the most hilarious names; he ends up throwing the tv out the window due to how into it he was in fact, and goes "Couldn't find the remote" to Dipper and Mabel's baffled expressions as they get home, which was hilarious. I love how he was actually predicting dialogue by the end "That's what I said!" he agrees to the tv.

Memorable/Funny bits:

Loved Mabel spinning on the globe at the start, Dipper's "I am pretending to write something down" note on his clipboard when he was trying to look like he wasn't just staring at Wendy. Actually, Mabel is funny in a lot of little ways like when she was going "bplht" over and over through her hair after Dipper flipped it in her face rather than removing it like a normal person. Her attempt at a greeting to Wendy's friends: "I chewed my gum so it looks like a brain!" They seemed to just kind of ignore her for most of the episode, although I did like the bit where they were climbing the fence and "your sister did it" and we get to see her doing that running in circles on the ground making whooping noises bit like Curly and later Zoiderber did.

I was a bit disappointed on the reduced attention to Mabel once she startedeating all that "Smile Dust" but dang, I first though she was just sick to her stomach which would be predictable, but then she started hallucinating and it was amazing. "Would you like to eat my candy paws" and that.. flying dolphin with fists coming out everywhere that shot lasers she was riding on.. I can't even.

It's probably good to have the more normal MC and the wacky one, so the wacky antics stick out more, but Dipper is kind of "protagonist guy" at times; hopefully he gets more of a thing later on? He had some bits here that amused me, like missing his face with his ice cream when being praised by Wendy, and I loved at the end when he realized the store was about to flip rightside up again he had this wide-eyed sort of "uh oh" look.

The ghosts just hating teenagers was certainly a twist, although when Wendy said "typical teenage behavior" I was also like, oh man. And him not being a teenager saved them all. Some of the bits like being inside the ddr machine (I'm not a dance machine! You are!) and being on the not Froot Loops box were funny (bonkers for eating you alive) but the bit where he all saw them as skeletons was actually kinda surprising; little kids would have really flipped their shit at that one.

The one phone girl's message being "Ahhhhhhhhhhhh emoji emoji" lol..

I also noticed the reappearance of Pitt cola on the soda machine in the convenience store, I see what you mean there. Looks like the book sort of came in handy again, even though he didn't read that much of it, and I guess they didn't have any lingering regrets? It may be he didn't actually banish them or let them pass on so much as appease them I guess?

The Inconveniencing is such a fantastic episode. The increased character development for Wendy is great, and it was a genuinely kind of creepy episode balanced out with great jokes. One line that constantly lives rent-free in my head is Thompson yelling, "NO, YOU'RE A DANCE MACHINE" at the DDR game.

Minor note, but I like the little connection of Dipper's lamb costume and him nearly getting sliced up by wool shears in the Li'l Gideon episode. A lot of tiny details are going to start to pay off in the upcoming episodes.

Ha ha, yeah I didn't connect that until you said it, but that's great.

Episode 6 - Dipper Vs Manliness

Dipper thus far hasn't been the biggest source of humor, so a Dipper focused A plot about him wanting to be manly isn't likely to be my favorite episode, and not so shockingly it wasn't. It wasn't a BAD episode as such, but it had less laugh out loud moments than usual due to the lower amount of Mabel.. although intellectually I suppose getting a break now and then helps reinforce just how weird she is when she returns. "DIPPER!! It's me, Mabel! I'm looking at you through this glass! Right here! This is my voice! I'm talking to you from inside!" and "Did you see me through the -" when he comes in. Ah, classic Mabel.

It starts when Mabel and Dipper want to head to the diner and get some food, so Stan leaves off from scamming some tourist, saying "I'm fine locking him inside if you are" and sticking a board out in front of the door as they go. At the diner Stan is too cheap to buy them much of anything (ordering Dipper a "ketchup packet") Mabel wanted pancakes and Dipper decides to try his luck at a manliness tester machine where you squeeze a lever and can win some pancakes (which are stacked up next to it for some reason) but both Mabel and Stan laugh at his idea to try it, and Mabel says he's not "Manly Mannington". Dipper can't reproduce that name but tries anyway and gets the "Cutie Patootie" result. The huge lumberjack guy tries and wins so hard the machine explodes, sending pancakes flying directly onto everyone's plates which got a laugh out of me.

I also liked how when Dipper was leaving he tripped over the beaver that had been popping up out of the floor and getting hit by a broom by Lazy Susan; which is a great name referencing revolving kitchenware. And Mabel notices Grunkle Stan has the hots for her, which makes her decide to hook them up, delivering one of the best bits in the episode, "Grunkle Stan, you are a cranky, gross, weird old man. But we will get Lazy Susan to like you because nothing is stronger than the power of-" "Love?" "Mabel! To victory!"

Dipper gets upset about not being called a "Male man" in a terrible mailman pun, and runs off into the woods where the supernatural stuff of the episode begins iin a more obvious way than usual even, a minotaur just leaps out of the woods, and I was like "Oh god, they're going to call this a Manotaur aren't they" and yep they sure did. Dipper is taken back to their "man cave" and after using some reverse psychology and taunting (calling them "chicken") or "using some kind of brain magic" as they put it, they decide to train him to be a real man, involving dumb things like sticking your hand in the "pain hole" and it's never explained what that actually does. I assume there's some kind of animal down there biting it?

Meanwhile, Mabel is trying to help out Grunkle Stan with flashcards and Soos dressed up as Lazy Susan, Soos ends up fleeing from a weird face Mabel has Stan make at one point. Mabel eventually decides this is going to take " some really great training music" one montage later including lyrics like "I really don't know what's happening at this part" and
they get their results. Stan is even more of a mess than usual, but Dipper just has to pass the final test of beheading the multibear, a bear with a lot of heads.

I like how Dipper is all "I have to take your head, or one of them anyway, there's like what, six heads?" Eventually they both bond over their shared love of Babba and their hit Disco Girl (A clear reference to Abba and Dancing Queen), which up to this point was something he'd been trying to hide from the Manotaurs and got embrassed when Grunkle Stan had brought it up; one thing this show does well is they have at least one solid running gag per episode. So Dipper decides not to be manly, and acccording to Stan in a surprisingly reasonable and affirming response to that, standing up for yourself even when it isn't popular IS manly. And Dipper grows a single chest hair that Mabel steals for her scrapbook and I seriously need to see more of that book; I think I spotted the beheaded Grunkle Stan wax figure in one of those photos. Also somehow Grunkle Stan ends up getting he number because Mabel gets the idea to introduce him as a fixer upper since Susan can't seem to stop getting her broken cake revolver thing to work, and it succeeds, but possibly "Also women live longer than men so your dating pool is smaller and you should really lower your standards." helped too, which was hilariously blunt again. When head in the clouds Mabel is super blunt like that it's unexpected at this point and make its funnier.

A few good jokes; The Manly Jerky with the guy saying "You're inadequate!" on it, Multibear in general, the names of the manotaurs were weird and I didn't recall them all, so I loved it when Dipper called one "Beardy" because he also forgot them all, but the guy was like "Yeah, I'm Beardy", so it was actually him remembering it instead of just making one up, which was a good reversal of expectations. Also when Dipper and Mabel were making tummy growling noises at the top of the episode and just started slapping their cartoon bellies together.

One thought: wonder if the Manotaurs revealed something new with "the gnomes in the trees and the mermen in the lake", since we haven't seen mermen yet iirc.

Also one of the cats names is literally catface
