nah that's a messed up situation, I understand why you're so stressed out. You don't have to undercut it by saying it sounds fake, a lot of stressful situations are abnormal and weird and hard to cope with.

Maybe you guys should spend some time apart and meet on more neutral terms. You're right to keep your safety net and not spend it so much on frivolous stuff, I can see what he means about give and take but you're right to get serious about that college nest egg you have. Maybe stop getting rides with him, though it is winter in America so that might not be an option. That, or weigh the fuel cost with your friend with how much it takes to call an uber.

And unless you're getting some of them, maybe stop buying him smokes? I dunno what that's about, though it's not my place to judge on that. There needs to be a clear set of personal boundaries set by both of you that you both need to observe imo, if your personal boundaries being exerted lead to your friend trashing his fucking apartment that's kinda fucked up.

The Switch released in 2017 anyway, the next console should be on its way by 2025. If you've got the original packaging, you might be able to score a couple hundred bucks reselling it at a place like CeX or like a really good secondhand store. Shop around, get a quote etc.

I mean due to space, circumstances and cost, the Switch is all I play. But sometimes I get listless and switch on the ol PS3.

Having to pay almost a hundred bucks a year for online is a fucking scam. Kinda wanna get a PC when I'm in a better position to capitalise on that.

It's fine, but it's not something you can really main unless it's the only thing you've got.

Cool, Metroid Dread has a demo, i've been on the fence about grabbing it. I think my least favorite part of owning a Switch is most games come out at $60 and stay that way for a long time. These days on Xbox, even an AAA game will drop $15 within 5-6 weeks of release. I'd rather drop like $30 on a Metroid game but I may just get it anyway because i've loved every Metroid i've played and this demo is probably gonna hook me.
It's a pain, but also I'm going to get an OLED by trading in my boxed launch Switch and 7 games. Not even Smash Ultimate has depreciated much, so with it, Animal Crossing and some other titles, I'll be able to get it for roughly $70 cash.

They're expensive because they don't depreciate, but their trade-in value stays high.

Some kid started at work today, he worked at a shearing shed and he picked everything up right away. Dude might be better at the job than I am, and I've been working there for a month. I think he's gonna do pretty well there.

All that matters is that I'm trying as hard as I can, I've got a good rapport and attitude, and now that the working day is done it's time to motherfuckin DRINK. In moderation of course, fuck going to work hungover.

Also got some fun stuff in the mail, so Wednesday's been pretty good. I don't have COVID, I'm working and I'm able to have some icy brews at the end of the day and no-one can say jack shit to me.

The reason this guy targeted a synagogue is supposedly because he wanted the rabbi to get in contact with a New York rabbi, under the belief that "east coast Jews run everything" and would be able to free the man from prison.

You have a person targeting a Texan rabbi to get a Texan prisoner released, by getting him to call a New York rabbi because he's fully entrenched in antisemitic conspiracy theories that Jews run the world. People are apparently trying to brush the antisemitism connection under the rug.

MrMallard
01/15/22 10:51:48 PM

I imagine she can't plug a battery straight into her thought-meat, her body has to metabolize food and produce energy in a natural way to most efficiently provide energy. If her brain gets energy too fast, her brain will probably burn out all its synapses and she'll die. If her brain is getting too little energy, the parts of the brain that the power isn't getting to will atrophy and calcify, shortening her life significantly.

It's like, you can try and instantly charge a phone with a direct feed of 1000 watts, but the battery will probably explode. You could charge your phone with a rinky-dink corner store phone charger that's basically a single copper wire, but it's borderline useless and it'll probably fuck up your charging port. You might as well use the charger your phone came with, because the wattage is set at the recommended level and the charge will be at its most efficient.

Why would you risk fucking up a human brain by electrocuting it? If you build in a metabolistic system that provides power to the brain through the digestion of food, you're going to get a safe, optimised fuel source for that part of the body.

The way I've seen it being described is that watching/listening to the podcast is like watching a caveman accept everything he's told at face value. "Hmm you tell Joe that hydrogen can be taken from air and turned into battery? Very interesting, tell Joe more about air battery". And it's only in the past few years that he's started to respond like "wait Joe was told vaccine numbers go up but you say vaccine numbers go down? Why you say number different? You explain this to Joe. You tell Joe truth".

So the way it seems to have happened is that the woman, Kyra, broke up with the man, Oscar, and Oscar didn't want the divorce but she did. So throughout this whole video she's saying the reasons why she's leaving to his face and they have to keep up the upbeat vlogger vibe the entire time despite Oscar clearly having a fucking terrible time.

There's one part where he's like "yeah like I really tried to make this work but like haha what are you gonna do", and there are these constant flashes of pure, abject misery on his face between the upbeat vlogger mask he's trying to wear for the video. And the whole time Kyra's like bouncy and happy and fun as she talks about how it was a relief to think of him with other women because it meant that he wasn't with her. She says that on camera next to the guy she's leaving, who clearly doesn't want her to leave. It's torture.

Oh yeah, Principal Lewis is hilarious for the most part. There was just one season where he was in every episode, and like a close friend of the Smith family, and they really played his insanity up and made it a big focus of the episode which came off as really one-note and forced.

He's amazing when he's used for jokes like these, but making a season where he's basically a main character next to the Smiths was a garbage decision. Otherwise, I like the character and I like American Dad as a show.

"Guardian Media Group plc (GMG) is a British-based mass media company owning various media operations including The Guardian and The Observer. The group is wholly owned by the Scott Trust Limited, which exists to secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity."

Looking up the Scott Trust Limited article adds this:

"The company is responsible for appointing the editor of The Guardian (and those of the group's other main newspapers) but, apart from enjoining them to continue the paper's editorial policy on "the same lines and in the same spirit as heretofore", it has a policy of not interfering in their decisions. The arrangement tends to give editors a long tenure: for example, the last incumbent, Alan Rusbridger, was there from 1995 until 2015."

Back in 2020 I binge-drank to the point of blacking out four days a week. I had a scare where my hands had pins and needles for hours on end and I pooped blood pretty severely, so I stopped drinking cold turkey and I was sober from mid-December to mid-March.

The hard part was making it to a month of sobriety, because after three weeks, my emotions began to come back at full strength. I ranted about a friend who stabbed me in the back in some other thread, but before that happened, I had been cutting back on spending time with him. Without having alcohol to make myself more palatable and mask my frustration, I began to realise how profoundly unhappy I was around him. Everyone else in that friend group was fine, but being around this guy was like poison for my soul. That was my first month of sobriety.

Two months felt like an accomplishment. Something about sobriety clicked, and I felt amazing. It felt like I was over the mountain, and while the rest of the journey would still be tough, that was the moment that I knew I was going to be alright. Two months of sobriety is fantastic.

But after that, I sank into maybe the deepest depression I had ever felt.

It's like, you're not always happy but you put on a happy face to be more palatable. You get to be sad sometimes, and sometimes you don't bother with the mask if things are especially bad, but that mask is there.

The depression I felt was so bad that I physically couldn't mask it. I could feel it on my face all the time, to the point that I would wake up frowning. My face felt physically heavy. I'd be playing Minecraft, and I would think to myself "I'm going to die", and I swear to god I would spiral exactly like in those doomer memes, totally unironically. I would stare off into space and think about dying, whether it would be tomorrow or 60 years from now, and it would consume me for hours at a time. The only thing I could comprehend was the thought of me dying.

So in mid-March when I decided to drink again, it was a significant decision. I understand alcohol to be a path that will likely lead to my own death. I continue to binge-drink to this day, I've been drinking since Friday and it's currently 1am on Sunday. But in the absence of any counselling or mental health treatment? Drinking was a band-aid I had to resort to. I sat out the back of my friend's place, looking at this bottle of gin for a couple of hours. Working my way up to breaking my sobriety.

I didn't want to do it.

But it was a choice between a potential death by alcohol, or this lingering, consuming depression that was telling me that I was going to die every day for hours at a time.

You know what I said about how I had been distancing myself from one of my friends because I realised how negatively I felt whenever I was around him?

The day after I broke my sobriety, he was my best friend again. I wanted to be around him, I wanted his company.

And what's more - I felt like myself again. I felt less and less like myself the longer I was sober, and drinking "brought me back", in a sense.

It's honestly a pretty scary few months of my life. And funnily enough, that wasn't even the worst part of 2021 for me.

I've been venting a lot on CE this weekend, but there was a point to me saying all of this. First of all, sobriety is hard. That first month sucks absolute donkey dick. 11 days is an understandable hurdle - I actually tried sobriety again in September, and I stumbled after about three weeks because my emotions were coming back at full strength and I couldn't cope.

But secondly, I think you should consider seeking treatment for your mental health alongside your teetotaling. I'm not saying you're going to be consumed by this fucking void of depression that tells you you're going to die every day - everyone is going to have different experiences. But I do think that with mental health support, you might be able to make it to a month of sobriety. And once you hit a month, that's when you gun for two months. And if at any point in your sobriety you reach any sort of emotional peril like I did, you have that support there to keep you from succumbing to the call of the void. I only began drinking again because I didn't have that support, and I needed that crutch in the face of something darker.

You can try to go sober cold turkey, it's a commendable act. But if you try again, I would genuinely recommend seeing a counsellor or a therapist or someone at the same time. Not only will it keep you on the right track, but any issues that arise during your sobriety can be immediately addressed as they happen.

At the end of the day, no-one can shame you for breaking your sobriety. I had a friend whose husband died, and they broke a year of sobriety in their grief. I spoke to them, monitored them and made sure they were okay, and once they reached some degree.of stability, they were able to stop using. There's no judgement for returning to alcohol for whatever reason you might have, and you shouldn't feel bad - it happens. Even if you realise you like drinking and want to keep doing it in moderation, that's your choice and I respect it.

But in the event that you seek out sobriety again, I hope that some of what I've said can help you. 11 days is hard, a month is hard, getting to a point where sobriety clicks is total dogshit. Add other complications like mental instability and depression, and it's a fucking hard process to put yourself through. If sobriety is something you seek out again, I can't stress this enough - seek out mental health services in tandem with your sobriety. It could be the difference between 11 days and 11 years of sobriety.

Yeah that's cooked. You're out here trying to be a good friend and she's making shit horrifically awkward - stuff like this could easily be a relationship ender. You've definitely gotta get your story straight and establish a position of concern on your end, if your friend gets the wrong idea it could be really bad for your friendship.

Your boy is destined to lead the remnants of humanity against our machine overlords
